North Olmsted, Ohio ? Jennifer Sherman thought she had hit her first shot of the day ? a 6-iron ? pretty well during a round Monday at North Olmsted Golf Course.

Sherman, 18, saw the ball hit near the front of the green on the 110-yard par 3 but had no idea where it had stopped. A small greenside ridge blocked her view of the hole.

She decided to peer into the hole after reaching the green. That's when she found her Pinnacle ball sitting in the bottom of the cup.

"I knew I had hit it good, but I didn't think I'd hit it into the hole," Sherman said.

She celebrated with a big hug from John Vanco, her partner for the round and the official witness for her ace.

It has been estimated that, for an average golfer, the odds of making a hole-in-one are 12,000 to 1.

But Sherman is not an average golfer. She has cerebral palsy, which has weakened the left side of her body to the point that she can swing with only her right arm.

She began golfing in a junior program at Oberlin Golf Club six years ago because she wanted to play with her cousins and joined the Northern Ohio Golf Association's Golfers With Disabilities program a year later.

"I like a sport where you're challenged," she said.

"She said, 'Every time you step on the tee, it's a new day,' " Sherman said. "You never know what's going to happen."
