My 12 yr old son went to spend the night at a friends house (3 kids total) down the road. We live outside of town, scattered houses with lots of woods/trails for the kids to play around. The kids do this all the time at night, they like to go out Ghost Hunting, the trail is also used for 4 wheelers & snow sleds.

9:30 I get a call from the parents that the kids were walking with flashlights on a trail in the woods. They came out on the main road and started heading back to the house they were staying at. Two guys approached in the middle of the road them yelling with guns telling them if they didnt stop they were going to shot and kill them! One guy fire a shot into the air and the boys froze.

The kids tried to appoligize and said they were just walking the trail and were let go. The two guys live in a house about 125-150 ft from the exit of the trail. The police were called and the guy was arrested for reckless conduct with a firearm and is in jail right now.

The guy said he saw lights in the woods and thought someone was going to break into his house......Kids were walking in the opposite direction of the guys house....The trail isn't even on his property....

Scared the hell out of me.....

Sorry to hear about that, what a scare!

Thank God for guns, it seems like if they weren't involved the situation could have really escalated!

Glad he's OK.

IMO, this man should serve a mandatory sentence for illegal discharge of a firearm and should be banned from owning a firearm of any type forever.

I think you have to call the cops and have them interview the guy and make a report.

The kids could also be cited for tresspassing.

Too much crazy shit going on to let your kids wander around late at night with flashlights.

This guy needs to be told firing guns is not allowed to stop anyone from doing anything.

NRA called and said arm the kids to the teeth

more guns more guns

Was the guy on his property when he fired the gun? Is the property inside city limits?

This, while true, speaks poorly of our society as a whole. I'm not gonna go all "old man" on you and talk about when we never locked our doors at night, but damn.

We've come to the point where letting our kids camp out in the back yard is endangering enough that Childrens Services might get involved.

What difference does that make? The idiot should not have been firing a gun. Period.

Long night just waking up.....

Scott the police were called and the guy was arrested for reckless conduct of a firearm. We meet with the police later to see what the next step is.

The land the kids were walking on is a old gravel pit, not owned by the guy that confronted them. The family that my son was staying at own the rest of the property they were walking on, they were less than 1/8 of a mile from the house, it just a quick loop through the woods.

I get seeing lights in the woods is unnerving, I'd be jumpy too. But there was no reason for this guy to feel threatened for his safety by 3 flashlighs in the woods 150 feet from his property line (my understanding he's a renter on top of it). If he was that scared a call to 911 would have worked much better for all involved. The kicker is he had a house full of people, I'm pretty sure he wasn't too scared.

In Maine have the right to protect yourself in/on your home or propery from intrueders if you are threatened. You must instruct the intruder to leave before taking action. You dont have the right to run down the middle of the road with a guns drawn and threaten to kill people and discharge a firearm.

We've talked with the kids, they'e pretty shooken up still. They have learned a valuable lesson on how quick things can go wrong in life....

I feel this person should lose his rights to own a gun, he obviously doesnt understand or respect gun and laws.

The guy was a good 100 yards from his house in the middle of the road with a gun drawn when he caught up with the kids. The kids had no idea what was happening, a car stopped to help them within eye shot of the house they were staying at.

T: That guy was your typical armed cowboy. He was close to seeing his fantasy come true. In my fantasy, the kids are replaced with armed cowboys and this ends in a firefight.

As you already mentioned, he should have called 911 if he felt threatened and then hid in the house (armed) to see if the "intruders" tried to enter his house. He wanted to be a bad ass and show off how tough he is. I hope he gets busted to the fullest extent of the law.

I am sure the point he was going for was that if he was on his property and outside the city limits then the discharge of a weapon is legal. If this was the case (which we know it wasn't), then this would be more about the kids being in the wrong for being on his property(which they weren't), but given the fact that he chose to chase someone(who it was is moot) down and fire a shot while standing on public property means he deserves charges, period.

Glad it didn't make it any further sports:toast:

I wonder if he was drinking? Did they give the shooter a Breathalyzer, just curious.

I did ask the Police to check while they were waiting for backup. I'm sure once they got done with this call they were right on to the next one so I'm sure it'll take time to sort out.

It's just crazy how it all played out. That could have been a group of Game Wardens coming through the woods, wonder how they would have reacted to someone threatening their lives. Could have been people looking for a lost or hurt pet any number of reasons. This guy wanted to be a badass and I hope he pays the price for doing so......

My greatest fear as a parent is some idiot like this ruin my childs life,,Not sure how I would react to him,but I am pretty sure it wouldnt be good. I know my dad would have taken matters in to his own hands, and probably be in prison for killing this idiot.
