I have a few quick words for those considering buying a gun for protection. I grew up around guns and always knew to consider any gun I encountered to be LOADED.

If you keep your for protection keep it loaded but in a safe location that you can quickly get to without too much fumbling around IN THE DARK.

If you are going to buy a gun get one that is of good quality and that suits your skills and feels comfortable to you.

Before you even buy the gun go through the drills mentally of when you might be forced to use a gun to protect yourself, family or property.

You do NOT brandish a gun hoping to scare someone with it. When you take it out... you HOPE that you will not have to use it but you ARE prepared to use it.

If you encounter someone in your house after dark and you feel the need to use your pistol or shotgun against an intruder it is to kill. Not to scare, maim or frighten.

Make that decision and get it over with.

Same goes for in public or in your place of business. If someone comes into my office threatening my "girls or wife" with a weapon or have already caused them bodily harm before I get there. They are DEAD.

I have always hired women as therapists in my chiropractic office. But now times have changed. The neighborhood is going Hispanic with some rough types around at times especially in the late afternoon. My afternoon male therapist who has been with me is a boxing champ. But that still won't help against a pistol.

Had an encounter with cops who actually came into my office last week to question someone. Now THAT'S great for business.... damn. Anyway. After they were through I followed them out and asked them if I was ok with the way I have my gun.

I keep a .357 Smith & Wesson with .38 Specials in it.. hollow points...in my briefcase at all times. It's right next to me if I'm in my office. It's buried but it's there. When I leave the office my briefcase rides right next to me on the front seat.

P.S. Kathy has completed her induction chemo, her counts are starting to rise and she may be home by the end of the week. There are some possible bone marrow matches but she will probably have to do at least two more sessions of chemo before being transplanted again. She has been in the hospital for 5 weeks now and our house looks like three vagrants have taken up residence there. And I just don't care.

AzRusty I sure appreciate the time you took for the comments as well as everyone else, I sure don't want to go into this half assed since I am quite reluctant in the first place. I like what you say about being ready to use it and not try to just scare somebody, I would hate to get called on that bluff.
I am sure you know we don't know each other even from this board so I don't know what is going on with Kathy (wife, daughter?) but be certain I wish you and her the very best and will keep you all in my prayers.

I have had a Glock 23 for several years. I admit that I did hear alot about the possibility of jamming with this or any other Glock. Have not had that problem, but have not shot alot of rounds. I like the feel and the overall lightness of the gun and 40 cal hollow points should be sufficient. Would agree with others that when buying any gun, don't try to skimp on the price. You will need to spend $500 or more. Now you have me intrigued about the Sigs. Have always heard alot about them. Will talk to some law enforcement types out this way for an opinion. Of course, you can always get those new 50 caliber handguns now available.

PENGUINFAN, i own a handgun and do carry it with me most times,but the law will tell u that u casn carry it if u have a busines that is in need to cary a weapon. me being a private investigator it is a different story,now i have a friend who owns a business and he also can carry one...the reason being is he takes the cash from his store to either his home or the bank, i carry a 38 special and think its a very good weapon,but u might want to try something in a smaller range gl

My reason. If you do,DO NOT buy a revolver of any kind. Not much effort needed to pull hammer back.Get an automatic with the stiffest slide you can find.One of the stiffer ones that I have is Walther PK. Gave it to a 10 year old girl that lived at my house an try as she would she could not chamber a round.While nothing is completely safe it made me feel much better for her sake and the children that came to play.

penguinfan, I own a Desert Eagle 9mm and I must admit, it is a sweet handgun. the magazine holds 15 rounds, and is ideal in size in my opinion. I also know people that own Glock, Smith&Wesson, and Ruger. hope this helps.

In California, especially So Cal, it is almost impossible to get a concealed permit. I ran a business where I routinely carried $20,000 cash or more. I have a perfectly clean record and they laughed at me. I also talked to a law enforcement guy at school today and he said quite a few officers in this area carry barettas.

I have a 12 gauge that I keep In the bedroom. No handgun yet. Shopping around though. Never thought I would own guns. Now I have a wife and baby on the way.
