Thoughts on Brenley?

I was talking to my best friend and we both agreed before game 4 that Batista should have started. Obviously it is easier to take that position now, but what do you guys think? Did Brenley make the right call here? Now he is faced with the Unit going on 3 days rest at Yankee Stadium in a must win. All that said, man, is this series great or what? I thought the '86 series with the Mets and Sox was the best I would ever see but this one has been awesome.

Nick,

I posted this under my prediction page where I indicated that Brenly would go with Schilling games 1,4,and 7. I believe it is the right decision because you give Schilling the opportunity to pitch game 7. . . if not, then Schilling would have pitched game 5, Johnson game six, then who would pitch game seven?

You gotta like having AZ's hopes rest on their two star pitchers at home in a worse case scenerio which is what Brenly has planned for. Certainly, Brenly would have loved to get the win in game 4 or have the luxury of giving Schilling his complete rest, but I believe he was smart in planning for the future of the series as well. So as far as starting him for game 4. . . guaranteed the right decision. . . as far as taking him out after 7 innings. . . this will be debated for a VERY long time!

I believe Brenly defenitely made the right decision in staring Schilling in game 4_--------Why???
Brenly loved the pitching match-up between Hernandez vs. Schilling___and with Schilling's low pitch count in game 1--i believe he felt that Schilling was capable of being dominant(as usual)-----and he probally felt that his team would have success against Hernandez!!! And he was right for starting Schilling--He was great again---it was the right descision--but perhaps he should have left him in to finish the job!!!

This would have probably been much easier for D Back fans to stomach if it was Miguel Batista that gave that sort of effort and BK came in and blew it. Brenly set it up perfectly and who knew Kim would have such a meltdown? Albeit the guy is wild and has been struggling since late in the season. This is where the Yankees have the definite advantage in the series. I don't think Mussina is worth 250 tonite. Batista has been solid.

it was set up right you have to go 1-4-7 with schilling and 2-6 with johnson.
but a piss poor move to yank him . win or lose it was a bad move because you were not saving anything by cutting schilling off at that pitch count. let him lose the game not a head case that can't throw strikes. no guts no balls no ws app. and in one of the hardest places to pitch when the fans start to roar. it's not 2nd guessing it was a bad move by a bad manager, this manager didnot earn his right to have a pro team it was given to him.
Raymond hope you are enjoying your temp. home and all is well for you might drive over in a month or so will let you know if we do,take care and be safe.

Brenly's blunder might have cost them the series. The huge mistake was pulling Schilling...but once he did that I had no problem with Kim relieving him. But NO reason Schilling should have been yanked. Maybe if it was 6-1 game at that point, not 3-1. I don't see how the possible 30 extra pitches he might have thrown in the final two innings would have affected him in any way.

I didn't have a problem with Kim pitching three innings. Take a look at how he did pitching two or more innings throughout the season and he did quite well. I have more confidence in him than anyone else Brenly could have sent to the mound...Morgan, Swindell, Lopez?, etc..no thanks. Even though he went 3-2 to each batter in the 8th, he still struck out the side and didn't allow a baserunner. O'Neill hit a little flare to left, wasn't much of a hit, then strikes out Bernie...up to that point, still had not walked a batter and only allowed the bloop to O'Neill. Then we obviously know Tino jumped on the first pitch and bang, tie game. Walks Posada on another fullcount, then Counsell slips, allowing Justice to reach first. Strikes out Spencer to end the ninth.

For the 10th inning, I think Brenly just wanted to match Rivera with Kim and try to get one more inning out of him, knowing Rivera would probably get pulled if they reached the 11th. After that, the Yanks bullpen was garbage, much like Arizona's would have been. Kim gets first two batters to fly-out, showing no ill effects from blowing the lead last inning...then Jeter hits an infamous Yankee Stadium right-field home-run. Not knocking the hit, as Arizona batters have the exact same oppurtunity to take advantage of the short porch in right.

So honestly, had no problem with Kim going three innings...the big problem was Brenly's idiotic, moronic, assinine decision to pull Schilling. As poor of a decision as I've seen, even if Arizona had won the game.
