The Yankees' out-of-whack rotation will feature another starter tomorrow when recent callup Mike Thurman, a righty, makes his Yankee debut against the White Sox.
Both Andy Pettitte and Orlando Hernandez are on the disabled list and the Yankees seem unsure that Sterling Hitchcock can give them a lengthy outing ? he pitched 2 1/3 innings in relief Friday night. Joe Torre rejected the idea of pitching Ted Lilly on three days' rest.
Thurman will be the eighth different starting pitcher the Yankees have used this season. Because of injuries, he will be the seventh pitcher to start for the Yankees over the last eight games.
Torre praised Thurman last week for "throwing a lot of strikes." The 28-year-old has a record of 25-36 in the majors with a 5.04 ERA, making 98 starts for the Expos over four years.
He signed a minor-league contract with the Yankees over the winter because he couldn't get a major-league deal with any other club ? the Indians offered one and then pulled it back, Thurman said.
"If I was going to have to compete for a job, it might as well be with the Yankees," Thurman said.
Thurman said he prepared yesterday as if he would have to pitch out of the bullpen in case David Wells' back faltered. Now he'll prepare for the start.
"I'm throwing the ball as well as I've thrown it the last couple of years," said Thurman, who was 5-3, 4.18 with the Yanks' Triple-A Columbus team. "I've been there before, I know what it's about. But of course I'm excited because it's my first as a Yankee."
