sure enough, after starting 5-0, i've lost 3 straight bowl games. i can't believe how much chalk i've been eating, and will continue eating. it's one of those rare bowl seasons where the favorites should be the more motivated team in most of these games.

Military Bowl

san jose (-7) 1 unit. everything screams to take bowling green in this game. san jose primarily moves the ball through the air. it's going to be very windy and bowling green has the 7th ranked pass defense in the country. but here's what i think is being overlooked - san jose also has a very good defense. in fact, they already have one shutout not far from dc, as they won at navy 12-0. which was their first ever win on the east coast. i expect a similar type game this afternoon, with a few turnovers from bg qb schilz being the difference.

under (44.5) 2 units. maybe this is too easy. both teams are in the top 25 in scoring defense and in 3rd down defense. we won't see too many sustained drives. especially if the wind is blowing across the field instead of end-to-end.

duke (+9) 1 unit. took some time to come up with a side in this game, but i finally landed on duke. what finally swayed me was cincinnati's defense. on paper, it looks pretty solid, ranking 12th in the country in points allowed. however i looked a little deeper into their schedule. here is the national ranking (in terms of scoring offense) for cincinnati's opponents this year:

72
78
90
41
47
60
85
94
104
118

this does not include their games against fordham and delaware st.

they only faced 2 offenses ranked better than 60th. and they lost both of those games (toledo and louisville). duke is ranked 46th in scoring offense. i like the blue devils' chances of putting up some points and keeping this game close. they should also be a lot more motivated for their first bowl game since 1995.

over (61) 1 unit. while i expect duke to be able to put up some points, their defense is pretty bad.

ucla (-3) 1 unit. i really like the bruins in this game, but it feels way, way too easy. i've been very impressed by hundley this year, and baylor has no shot at slowing him down along with johnathan franklin. even with the suspension of tevin mcdonald, i think ucla will get just enough stops on defense to pull out a win.

i'm leaning towards the over, but if ucla gets a lead and a stop or two, they may start to really grind it out on the ground. in fact, that may be their game plan to keep baylor's offense off the field.
