UTEP(ML) over San Diego St
The miners return 7 starters on offense and 10 on defense. UTEP's down fall was turn overs something Coach Price with hope Jordan Palmer can handle. SDS returns 4 offensive starters and may struggle to move the ball against the Minor vetran defense peppered with senior leadership. UTEP might be looking ahead to Texas Tech but being the first season game IMO the miners will be focused. The UTEP o-line returns 3 starters and replaces the 2 with upper classman. This is important becuase SDS has returning players on the D-line and in the secondary, considered one of the top secondaries in the moutain west. Still with Palmer, Higgins, Thomas, Price and a good O-line the miners should win this game. If UTEP limits turnovers this season they might turn heads down the stretch. No more speedster Ebell but Senior Jordan Palmer must lead this team and IMO he will because he has a freshman with a ton of talent pushing him. Plus there will be no more excuses for this defense, so the pieces are in place for the miners this season.
Looking at a few more plays to come......
Good luck to all this season.

Cheers

Gl this season to you Irish. Alotta good cappers liking UTEP. But SDSU is not as bad as everyon says. Theyv got a top flight back in Hamilton, and he has only looked better this season in camp. A tough came to cap but your write up has some great info and IMO UTEP should win. But SDSU @ home with Hamilton definatley will not b pushed around, but in terms of matchup UTEP def looks better on paper. GL

Agree that SDS is a much improved team. They have a solid RB and QB but I think they have issues on the o-line. They only return 1 starter on the line and considering what Chuck Long wants to do on offense. Might be a few seasons before he has the players needed to run the same type O he was used to in Norman. I think the book looks into how poor the miners finished the season but they till return a lot of talent, a strong coach and the ability to run by this SDS team. Even with 10 players coming back on defense I don't see the minors holding people out of the endzone.

South Carolina (-6.5) over Miss St
Put up or shut up time for Miss St this season. Leading that charge is Sophomore QB Henig. This kid has only completed 44% of his passes last season. The sophomore gets the starting nod because the past QB is making a move to WR, this IMO leaves both positions a little week because Conner had better mobility than Henig and still not a solid choice at WR. The Miss St line is a little weak as well considering they will look to a JUCO standout, Sophomore and Redshirt Freshman to keep Henig upright. Miss st will make up ground on defense with speed and tackling ability but they lack size and can get overpowered by teams. Speed should help them play with the fun and gun offense of Spurrir but poor CB play should allow Sidney Rice to get open all day. This will be good news because the Gamecocks line is a huge question mark. Davis will need to make rushing plays on his own because the speed of Miss St will hurt the blocking of S.Carolina.There is a chance that the O-line for S.Carolina improves with Thomas, Thompson returning and the word is Gurminder Thind is the best in the lot and coming into his own in his sophomore campaign. Looking for Blake Mitchell to limit his interceptions and he should get it done. He has a strong arm and is a warrior but I wouldn't put it past Spurrir to revolve Cade Thompson into the game considering he had a VERY good spring. But Blake knows the offense and should improve as his line improves (Bailey/JUCO transfer will help this unit) and with Rice at wideout and the lack of talent at CB for miss St I expect the gamecock offense to go to the air early and often. The Gamecock defense is much like Miss St as it prefers SPEED to size and De Co Nix likes his aggressive unit. Nix will be looking for big plays this season from CB Bennett and LB's Brinkley (JUCO stud, should come in and make name for himself) and Wells. Bad news from this unit is the weakness of the D-line, Nix will have to mix up blitzes and coverage to get a pass rush because the line does not impress me. Still the Gamecocks have a decent secondary and they have speed at LB to drop into cover but no defensive player can shut a team down in the passing game if the D-line can't rush the passer. All of that said the gamecocks should run by this team. Spurrir's offense is very complex and should be tough for a poor Miss st defense to defend. Would like to see the Gamecock line to step up to the plate but Mitchell should be used to getting the ball away quickly and receivers will be open in this game. Spurrir should have his boys primed and ready for this conference game and IMO the gamecocks passing game sets the table for a big rushing day for Davis. Spurrir will mix it up enough to keep Miss St guessing all game, if Mitchell runs the offense like a second year start and Spurrir type QB does. Never like home dogs in conference play on opening day, but IMO the talent on offense for S.Carolina will get it done.

Right Side - sorry I didn't respond earlier but I think you are on the right side here :SIB .

very true, many times people will buy into "returning plays" as being "good players". Alot of the time, their is a a younger, more talented backup who only is sitting on the bench because the elder player will get the nod most of the time. Almost a respect thign, and we saw a great example with Koetter picking Keller over Carpenter in Tucson, only to be criticized by his "governing" players and AD. But you dont have that influence in smaller schools, and many times a player will have to wait out his callup until the other graduats or is injured. Sometimes a returning favor is actually worst for a team, because since he was a starter the previous year, he is given the respect of keeping the job until he plain and simple sucks...anyhow, i like the play, but i can also see SDSU coming out and taking this by storm and becom this year what Utah became 2 years ago Meyer..sure O'Connell isnt Smith (he did had 429 yards RUSHING and 6 tds, on top of his 2900/19-12 Passing), but he has a better arm, and a NFL caliber RB in Hamilton...and we all know Craft;s defenses were his pride and joy, and the ironic part is this years Aztecs D may carry them llike no other, with 8 returning starters on D themselves, and these are dominant starters.. Linebcackers have been the SDSU strength the last couple years (3 LB's drafted in the NFL draft in the last 2 years), and they always have been able to fill the position with one breakthrough player after another. Martin was a starting outside LB (and honorable mention), who has moved to MLB with the drafting of Freddie Keiaho, and returning starter at OLB Russell Allen is still thir. So 2 out of 3 LB's are still playing, both having great seasons as well, and a name the program has praised in Andrw Schantz now has his chance. D-Line is my favorite this year (even though the secondary returns 3 starters, 2 of whom are all-conference), with SR Jonathan Bales at DT, and JR's Antwan Applewhite (ANOTHER defensive honorabl mention) and Nick Osborn at the opposing end position, I really love their defense in the trenches with these 3...and th Secondary which i mentiond before, SS Reggie Grisby and CB Terrell Maze were both honorable mentions, but what is even more intriguing is that many believe CB Donny Baker didnt make Honorable Mention BECAUSE of Maze; they are considered by many as equals in talent. So the SDSU secondary is something teams will know about, and what I cant wait to see is the trench warfare with SDSU's d-line and if they play as good as many close to the program believ they will...we have a great defense her in San Diego this year, ALOT of All-Conf/Honorable Mention players, and this is while SDSU still allowed 406 yards/g last year. This defense made some big plays last year, but allowed almost 4 TD's a game and the yardage i mentioned earlier, so with so many all-conference selections, and a new prove nwinner coaching, this defense may finally come around to play to its potential, b/c it def has the players...Most pubs hav Kyle Bell (Col St) and Curtis Brown (BYU, has my vote for all-conf as well) as their 2 All-MWC preseason RB's, but Hamilton who was a frosh All-American in '03, has the speed and power that is very similar to my Heisman candidate: Marshawn Lynch. He lost alot of his hype last year, as a victim of a brutal O-Line, and I think thats exactly what he needs to shine. If not he would be another Adrian Peterson, who shined as a frosh, and was only expected to be heroic in every year after that. But Hamilton has lost the spotlight, and even though he is considered to have had a bad year for his talent, he still amassed 11 TD's and 980 yards, and has gained NCAA All-MWC (it might be 2nd team, but I do think it was actually 1st...either way All MWC by the NCAA themselves, not just another tout magazine) in a conference that boasts names I mentioned above like Kyle Bell, Curtis Brown, Wendell Seldon (Wyoming back who had 11 TD's as well, and had a higher YPC average then Hamilton) and the big 1-2 punch @ TCU of Robert Merrill (honorable mention) and Aaron Brown (Frosh of the Year, LY)...the MWC is loaded with running backs, and the sad part is that one of top 3 in my boy Lionel Hamilton, still will have a horrible O-Line...O-Line truley is the only "weak" area of the SDSU Aztecs this year...however many changes have been made with JUCO transfers Peter Manuma and David Hathaway, and a large beast of a man in true frosh Whitly Fehoko...from what ive read, all 3 could end up as starters and replace the tiny o-line that SDSU had last year...so they got their size now, only problem is they wont have a game of experience between the 3 of them if they do all end up starting, which is highly likely....anyhow, got a littl carried away here, but I just dont see any reason why so many people are sold that UTEP will destroy SDSU...im not a homer either, dont really like the Aztecs as they have let me down alot, but how can you say any team will destroy another when Vegas believes that their about even (obv couple points for away team), and th home team is so well rounded that half its squad is either all-conference or honorable mention, and a RB who would hav blasted for 1500 yards GUARENTEED, if he had an offensive hline that was HALFWAY decent

From the people I talk to...perhaps there are a few guys on UTEP but overall people are looking at SDS, after the spread is giving to the minors.

I'm with you on that, Right Side.

As a fan of Ole Miss and a former MSU student, I follow the Dogs closely. People are putting too much emphasis on the fact that Spurrier has never won in Starkville and giving MSU's defense too much credit. They have a veteran defense, but their offense won't stay on the field long enough to allow them a breather.

They may keep it close through the first half, but with the game being displyed nationally, Spurrier will pour it on in the second half.

Good luck with the play, I'll be on it too.

N'Western (-4) over Miami (OH)
With a heavy heart the Wildcats take the field after losing their head coach in the off season. The Wildcats will look to replace their QB but have a very strong O-line and running back to take the pressure off of starter Bacher. Bacher is a good young QB that understands the spread offense. He has a good arm and decent scrambling ability, the question will be can he direct the offense considering he lacks game experience and is a sophomore. Still I think he is a good fit in what this offense is attempting to do this season. IMO this game will come down to Running back Sutton, this sophomore will look to improve on his outstanding freshman campaign. Sutton should open up plenty of room for Herbert. He is a very good wide out that will use his speed to make an impact this year. Four of last year's starters return to the o-line but there is a hole from last years group, (best O-lineman but) it should be filled by center Austin Matthews will need to step up after missing last season due to academics. This O-line should have some success against a decent Defensive line. Where the plays will open up is in the middle. Sutton will draw the poor M(OH) into the box to play the run and the spread offense will pay off. If the Linebackers stay true the talent at WR should beat them straight up because the best M(OH) player-CARD/FS will be shadowing Sutton so deep routes will be available. I am looking to see how the LB's for M(OH) react to playaction, again something I think they will struggle against. A mix of pass and run will be VERY important because M(OH) does have a decent secondary. The N'Western offense has to use all aspects in their playbook and talent should do the rest. On the other side of the coin, N'Western will be solid at corner back and Linebacker but they lack solid rush ends and getting to the passer will be an issue against better teams. I would think Mims (soph) should help this line but he can't do it alone and the lack of help will hurt his production. This shouldn't be a problem considering Miami is poor on the offensive line. Only two starters return, but the three new faces all have plenty of talent and should keep things rolling in pass protection. This protection will be key for first year starter Kokal. This kid doesn't look like the typical M(OH) QB, but he can run and that will be important. Still he is green under center and will look to Robinson and Murphy to carry most of the burden moving the offense. I think this will be a good game and M(OH) will come out to play but the talent at the skills position should be enough for N'Western to finish the drink. Bacher will have to learn game speed quickly but the other players will help him and he will manage the offense enough to be productive. N'Western HAS TO step up on the defensive line and force the young QB in Miami to make mistakes which he will if forced to create when a play breaks down. Would love to see N'Western come out and dictate play, start strong and not look back.

looks like Kafka will start for N'western. This is good because he is a redshirt freshman so he knows the offense. His mobility macks him a good fit for the spread offense. he is green under center but I expect him to play well running and throwing the ball. Interesting side note.....the redhawks will honor Randy Walker...the deceased N'western coach and former Miami standout. Should inspire some of the wildcat upper classmen that played for him IMO.

Ball St (-4.5) over EM
small play....like the ball st experience and the have home field advantage. Lynch should be solid at Qb, rushing and wide out. Ball st has won 4 of last 6 including a 1 point win at EM last year. Ball st is 52-26-3 in home openers. Home crowd and experience against an alright team should be enough for Ball St.

According to Phil Steele Kafka has the strongest arm of the NW QB's. I liked the idea of Bacher being the guy since he has a little experience and is a sophomore.

Do you know why they chose Kafka over Bacher?

anyway, good luck on the play Irish. I am on the same side

From what I under stand this kid Kafka won the job by a slim margin and the coaches love his arm and scrambling ability. They hope that he performs in the game as he has done in Spring and two a days. They look for him to control the huddle better but with the players he has around him they figure no time like the present. His ability is better than Bacher in the ability department but considering they both haven't had game experience they went with the more potential. Still should be interesting to see his developement and decision making on an energetic and emotional night. IMO he is the better QB and I like what he can do if the secondary is in blanket coverage... easy 6-7 yard scrambles until the LB's find him, I don't see the D-line getting to him from behind, he will make it into the secondary. Still all that said always a guess when a young boy makes it into the lights of the game.
