Butler (30-4) vs. Syracuse (30-4)

Thursday, March 25th, 7:07 p.m. (et)

FACTS & STATS: Site: EnergySolutions Arena (19,120) -- Salt Lake City, Utah. Television: CBS. NCAA Tournament Record: Butler 10-9, Syracuse 52-32. Series Record: Syracuse leads, 1-0.

GAME NOTES: Owners of a 22-game win streak, the Butler Bulldogs take their act to EnergySolutions Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah tonight where they will clash with the Syracuse Orange in the round of 16 in the 2010 NCAA Tournament.

The fifth-seeded Bulldogs are appearing in the "Sweet 16" for the fourth time in program history, and the third time in the last eight years. Butler, which hasn't lost a game since bowing to UAB (67-57) in non-conference action back on December 22nd, ran the table in the Horizon League with an 18-0 mark and won the league title going away. After capturing the conference tournament with a 70-45 thrashing of Wright State, the Bulldogs set their sights on a bigger prize and defeated UTEP in the first round of the 72nd annual NCAA Tournament by a score of 77-59. Last Saturday, the team slipped by a surprising Murray State squad with a narrow 54-52 final to advance in the West Regional.

Playing away from home hasn't been a problem for Butler this season as the team led all of Division I with a mark of 12-1 (.923) and was one of only two teams at that level to suffer just a single road setback, the other being Syracuse (8-1), which lost to Louisville in the regular-season finale at Freedom Hall (78-68).

Speaking of the top-seeded Orange, they advanced this far for the 19th time in school history and have a tremendous 52-32 record in the event overall. The program with the fifth-most wins (1,783) in Division I history, Syracuse now needs just one more win to match its all-time record for victories in a single season at 31. Since losing back-to-back games to Louisville and Georgetown to close out the regular season and bow out of the Big East Conference Tournament, respectively, the squad has defeated Vermont (79-56) in the first round of this tourney and also taken care of Gonzaga (87-65) rather easily in the season round last weekend.

With respect to the all-time series between these two teams, this is just the second meeting following a 66-65 overtime win for Syracuse in the Carrier Dome during the second round of the 2002 NIT.

The winner of this clash advances to the regional finals on Saturday where it will meet either Xavier or Kansas State for the right to play at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis in the Final Four next weekend.

Murray State gave the Bulldogs a run for their money last weekend in the second round of the tournament, pushing the game to just a two-point decision even as Danero Thomas came up scoreless and the starting five for the Racers combined for a mere 27 points. The Bulldogs put four players in double figures as Ronald Nored accounted for a game-high 15 points and handed out six assists, followed by Gordon Hayward with 12 points and seven rebounds. Shelvin Mack and Willie Veasley chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively, as the team slipped by with a mere 36 percent shooting from the field and 11-of-19 shooting at the free-throw line. Through 34 games, in which he has played all but one, Hayward is both the leading scorer and rebounder for the Bulldogs with his 15.2 points and 8.3 rebounds per contest, adding 61 assists to make himself a threat in that department as well. Mack (14.1 ppg), Matt Howard (12.0 ppg) and Veasley (10.2 ppg) are all critical pieces to the offensive puzzle for a Butler squad that spreads the wealth in order to come up with nearly 70 ppg. More importantly, the defense has been top-notch this season by limiting opponents to 59.8 ppg, a number that the squad bettered in facing Murray State last weekend.

Gonzaga was severely overmatched by the Orange last weekend as Syracuse set a team record for three-point field goals in an NCAA Tournament game with a total of 12 in the lopsided decision for the squad. Wes Johnson used his 4- of-6 shooting beyond the arc to achieve his career-best 31 points and added to his dominating effort by also clearing 14 rebounds, making him the sort of inside-outside threat that opponents fear. Also scoring in double figures for the Orange were Andy Rautins with 24 points and Brandon Triche who accounted for 24 and 13 points, respectively, as the former made good on 5-of-9 attempts out on the perimeter as well. While Syracuse was hitting 12-of-25 from three- point range, Gonzaga was struggling with just three conversions in 21 chances from the outside. Johnson, the Big East Player of the Year and a finalist for both the Naismith and Oscar Robertson trophies, is averaging a double-double thus far in the tourney with his 24.5 points and 10.0 rebounds per game. But perhaps even more startling is the fact that he has made good on 63.6 percent of his three-point tries, the team hitting 22-of-27 chances compared to Vermont and Gonzaga which combined for a mere 8-of-43. The team will need another huge effort by Johnson and Rautins again tonight since it was announced on Wednesday that center Arinze Onuaku will again miss the game due to a right quadriceps injury.

The Bulldogs will be trying to slow the pace of this meeting in order to keep it close, so it will be up to Syracuse to try and dictate the tempo when it serves it in order to come away with the victory.

Predicted Outcome: Syracuse 71, Butler 64

Washington (26-9) vs. West Virginia (29-6)

Washington (26-9) vs. West Virginia (29-6)

Washington (26-9) vs. West Virginia (29-6)

Thursday, March 25th, 7:27 p.m. (et)

FACTS & STATS: Site: Carrier Dome (33,633) -- Syracuse, New York. Television: CBS. NCAA Tournament Record: Washington 17-15, West Virginia 22-22. Series Record: Washington leads, 1-0.

GAME NOTES: The second-seeded West Virginia Mountaineers have reached the NCAA Tournament's round of 16 as expected, and they will attempt to avoid an upset tonight against the red-hot Washington Huskies, the East Region's 11th seed.

Up next for the winner of this contest is an Elite Eight matchup with either top-seeded Kentucky or 12th-seeded Cornell.

Washington carries a nine-game win streak into tonight's game, including a successful run through the Pac-10 Tournament and the first two rounds of this NCAA Tournament. The Huskies, who are 26-9 overall this season, defeated sixth-seeded Marquette by an 80-78 final in the first round before knocking off third-seeded New Mexico rather easily, 82-64. Washington is making its third Sweet 16 appearance during the Lorenzo Romar era, and the program is 17-15 all-time in the NCAA Tournament. The Huskies will tie a program record with their 36th game played tonight, a mark previously set by the 1938 squad.

West Virginia has won its last eight games to move to 29-6 overall, and head coach Bob Huggins thought his team was worthy of a No. 1 seed, especially after winning the Big East Conference Tournament. The Mountaineers may be using the perceived snub as motivation, as they crushed 15th-seeded Morgan State in the first round before knocking off 10th-seeded Missouri by a 68-59 final in the second round. That victory enabled WVU to even its all-time NCAA Tournament record at 22-22. The Mountaineers finished sixth in the final regular-season poll, the best finish for the program since placing fifth in 1960.

The Huskies won their only previous meeting with the Mountaineers back in 1973.

Quincy Pondexter was the hero for Washington in the first round against Marquette, as he hit the game-winning shot at the end of regulation. Pondexter leads the squad with 19.7 ppg, and he is shooting 53.2 percent from the floor while pulling down 7.5 rpg. Isaiah Thomas is the only other double-digit scorer on the roster, as he checks in with 17.1 ppg and 3.1 apg. The Huskies are netting 79.9 ppg while limiting foes to 70.0 ppg. In the 18-point romp over New Mexico, Pondexter scored 18 points, while Thomas added 15 points and seven assists. Matt Bryan-Amaning, the club's best frontcourt performer, posted 15 points and nine rebounds, while Elston Turner tallied 10 points. The Huskies played strong defense in that tilt, holding the Lobos to 39.4 percent shooting from the field. Washington finished the game with 21 assists against five turnovers and drained eight three-pointers.

West Virginia is generating 72.9 ppg while limiting opponents to 63.3 ppg on 41.7 percent shooting from the field. The Mountaineers are led by Da'Sean Butler, who is scoring 17.5 ppg to go along with 6.3 rpg and 114 assists. Kevin Jones, who has started all 35 games alongside Butler, checks in with 13.6 ppg and 7.2 rpg, while Devin Ebanks rounds out a solid trio with 12.0 ppg and 8.3 rpg. The Mountaineers are strong on the boards, outrebounding foes by nearly seven caroms per contest. In the nine-point win over Missouri on Sunday, Butler scored 28 points on the strength of a 12-of-13 effort from the foul line. Ebanks tallied 14 points, and Jones netted 13 points to go along with nine rebounds. Strong defense was key to the triumph, as WVU limited Missouri to 32.8 percent shooting from the field. A 25-12 edge in points from the foul line helped the cause as well. There is some bad news to report for the Mountaineers, as starting point guard Darryl Bryant broke his foot in practice on Tuesday and will miss the remainder of the tournament. Bryant is averaging 9.3 ppg to go along with his 108 assists, and he will be missed.

The Mountaineers do not win pretty, but they have found a way to get the job done 29 times this season. Expect number 30 today, as they will get past the Huskies to advance despite the absence of Bryant.

Predicted Outcome: West Virginia 79, Washington 72

Xavier (26-8) vs. Kansas State (28-7)

Xavier (26-8) vs. Kansas State (28-7)

Xavier (26-8) vs. Kansas State (28-7)

Thursday, March 25th, 9:37 p.m. (et)

FACTS & STATS: Site: EnergySolutions Arena (19,120) -- Salt Lake City, Utah. Television: CBS. NCAA Tournament Record: Xavier 19-20, Kansas State 30-27. Series Record: Xavier leads, 4-2.

GAME NOTES: Into the Sweet 16 for the third straight year, the Xavier Musketeers try to extend their 2009-10 campaign a bit longer as they challenge the Kansas State Wildcats in the NCAA Tournament West Regional Semifinal at EnergySolutions Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Sixth-seeded Xavier, in the NCAA Tournament for the fifth straight year and the ninth time in the last decade, defeated Minnesota in first round of the 72nd annual event last Friday with a 65-54 decision and then topped Pittsburgh by a mere three points, 71-68, in the second round two days later. Now with 26 wins on the season, the Musketeers have matched their fourth-highest total in program history as they chase the all-time mark of 30 victories stemming from their efforts in 2007-08.

As for the second-seeded Wildcats, back in the round of 16 for the 17th time in school history and the first time since 1988, they have won four of their last five outings, with the lone setback coming against top-ranked Kansas during the Big 12 Conference Tournament.

Kansas State, in the NCAA Tournament for the 24th time overall, took care of North Texas rather easily in the first round with an 82-62 triumph and then topped nationally-ranked BYU over the weekend in Oklahoma City with an 84-72 decision to advance.

As far as the all-time series between these two teams is concerned, Xavier has won three in a row over the Wildcats and now owns a 4-2 advantage overall, thanks to a 103-77 blowout of KSU in the most recent meeting on New Year's Eve of 2007.

The winner of this contest will take on the winner of the Butler/Syracuse meeting in the regional final on Saturday.

Trailing by three points in the first half against Pittsburgh last weekend, the Musketeers dialed up the offense and the defense as they put on a 16-0 scoring run and the team successfully avenged a loss to the Panthers in last year's NCAA Tournament. Jordan Crawford, who continues to go where few Xavier players have gone before, posted a game-high 27 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the floor, adding six rebounds, while Jason Love and Terrell Holloway accounted for 14 and 13 points, respectively. Only a sophomore, Crawford was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Year by a couple of media outlets and has scored at least 20 points in five straight outings. Through 34 games this season, Crawford is the top scorer in the A-10 with his 20.2 ppg, getting the job done with an impressive 40 percent shooting behind the three- point line. Also a sophomore, Holloway adds 11.7 ppg to the attack and has delivered on 132 assists to players like Love who, in this his senior season, has ratcheted up his production with 11.8 ppg, 8.5 rpg and 50 blocked shots.

Guard play was again key to Kansas State's success last weekend as Jacob Pullen and Denis Clemente combined to post 53 of the unit's 84 points in the victory against a tough-minded BYU squad. Pullen made good on 7-of-12 shots behind the three-point line and converted all 11 of his field goal attempts as he finished with an astonishing 34 points. Clemente had a trio of triples of his own, putting up another 19 points, while Curtis Kelly tacked on 10 points and seven rebounds for a squad that knocked down 27-of-30 tries at the charity stripe. Also playing a key role off the bench was Wally Judge with his eight points and team-best eight rebounds. Pullen, who leads the team in eight different statistical categories, is the leading scorer for the Wildcats with his 19.2 ppg and has scored in double figures in every game this season. With 35 consecutive double-digit scoring efforts, Pullen is second on the school's all-time list behind only Mitch Richmond who turned the trick in 50 straight. Clemente (16.3 ppg) accounts for a team-best 148 assists while Jamar Samuels, who missed all six of his field goal attempts against BYU, is second on the team in scoring with 11.3 ppg and is one of the leaders on the glass with better than five boards per game.

Crawford is a dynamic player for the Musketeers, but he could easily be overshadowed by the combination of Pullen and Clemente if everything falls into place for the Wildcats tonight.

Predicted Outcome: Kansas State 80, Xavier 69

Cornell (29-4) vs. Kentucky (34-2)

Cornell (29-4) vs. Kentucky (34-2)

Cornell (29-4) vs. Kentucky (34-2)

Thursday, March 25th, 9:57 p.m. (et)

FACTS & STATS: Site: Carrier Dome (33,633) -- Syracuse, New York. Television: CBS. NCAA Tournament Record: Cornell 2-5, Kentucky 100-44. Series Record: Cornell leads, 1-0.

GAME NOTES: The "Cinderella" Cornell Big Red, the 12th seed in the East Region, will attempt to upset the top-seeded Kentucky Wildcats in the Sweet 16 of the 2010 NCAA Tournament tonight.

The winner of this contest will move on to the Elite Eight to do battle with either the second-seeded West Virginia Mountaineers or the 11th-seeded Washington Huskies.

Cornell is the first Ivy League team to reach the round of 16 since 1979, a tremendous accomplishment to say the least. The Big Red, who are 29-4 overall, had never won an NCAA Tournament game prior to the start of this year's event. After beating fifth-seeded Temple by a 78-65 final in the first round, Cornell was even more dominant in the second round, easily handling fourth-seeded Wisconsin, 87-69. The Big Red have set the Ivy League single-season wins record, but coach Steve Donahue's group is still hungry for more and refuses to view itself as an underdog despite Kentucky's prowess.

Speaking of the Wildcats, they are led by first-year head coach John Calipari, and he boasts quite possiblly the nation's most talented starting five. Three of the starters are freshmen, and while youth can be a detriment, Kentucky has been dominant through the first two rounds of this event. After crushing 16th- seeded East Tennessee State to open play, 100-71, the team rolled past ninth- seeded Wake Forest by a 90-60 final on Saturday. The Wildcats are making their record 50th NCAA Tournament appearance and own a 100-44 record in the tourney. They are 34-2 overall this season and won both the SEC regular season and tournament titles.

The Big Red won their only previous meeting with the Wildcats way back in 1967.

Cornell is led by Ivy League Player of the Year Ryan Wittman, who is scoring 17.8 ppg on the strength of his 43.0 percent shooting from three-point range. While that efficiency from behind the arc is tremendous by most standards, it actually leaves Wittman slightly below the curve in regard to the team's overall accuracy. The Big Red are connecting on 43.4 percent of their three- pointers, staggering to stay the least, and they are netting 75.8 ppg while holding opponents to 63.4 ppg on 41.8 percent shooting from the floor. Louis Dale, Cornell's point guard, provides 12.6 ppg and 144 assists against a mere 66 turnovers. As for Jeff Foote, a 7-0 center, he checks in with 12.4 ppg and 8.1 rpg. Taking a look at the 18-point win over Wisconsin, the Big Red shot a stellar 61.1 percent from the floor, including 8-of-15 from three-point range. Dale led the charge with 26 points, and Wittman added 24 points. Foote and Chris Wroblewski pitched in 12 points apiece for Cornell, which earned a 29-21 rebounding advantage and only committed eight turnovers.

Kentucky freshmen John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins may be the two most talented players in the nation. Wall, a dynamic point guard who recently garnered SEC Player of the Year honors, is scoring 16.8 ppg to go along with 228 assists and 60 steals. As for Cousins, a bullish power forward, he is posting 15.1 ppg and 10.0 rpg to complement his 67 blocked shots. Fellow forward Patrick Patterson is sometimes overshadowed by the rookies, but his 14.6 ppg and 7.2 rpg shouldn't be overlooked. The third freshman starter in the fold is Eric Bledsoe who brings 11.4 ppg to the floor. Kentucky is posting 80.1 ppg while limiting opponents to 65.3 ppg on 37.9 percent shooting. In the 30-point blowout of Wake Forest, it was Darius Miller, the only starter not averaging double figures in scoring, who led the squad with 20 points. Cousins added 19 points and eight boards for the Wildcats, who shot 60.3 percent from the field and limited Wake to 32.8 percent efficiency.

Cornell would have an outstanding chance of beating any other remaining team in the Sweet 16, but Kentucky represents a bad matchup for the Big Red. The combination of Patterson and Cousins up front will be too much to handle.

Predicted Outcome: Kentucky 85, Cornell 71

Pacific (22-11) at Appalachian State (24-12)

Pacific (22-11) at Appalachian State (24-12)

Pacific (22-11) at Appalachian State (24-12)

DATE & TIME: Thursday, March 25th, 8:00 p.m. (et)

FACTS & STATS: Site: Holmes Center (8,325) -- Boone, North Carolina. Television: None. CIT Tournament Record: Pacific 4-1, ASU 2-0. Series Record: First-ever meeting.

GAME NOTES: For the first time ever on the hardwood the Appalachian State Mountaineers will tangle with the Pacific Tigers when the two teams meet in the semifinals of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament at the Holmes Center. Originally scheduled for Wednesday night, this game was moved to tonight because of travel issues that arose for Pacific.

The Tigers, which were the Big West Conference regular-season co-champion, are playing in this event for the second consecutive season and have a 4-1 record in this tournament. Pacific opened the CIT with an 86-76 decision over Loyola- Marymount, and followed that with a 63-59 win over Northern Colorado. The Tigers, who are now 22-11 on the season, have also played well on the road, notching a 10-6 ledger away from home.

As for the Mountaineers, they pummeled Harvard in their first-round matchup, 93-71, and continued their strong play in the quarterfinal round by defeating Marshall, 80-72. Appalachian State has won eight of its last nine contests, and the team's 24 victories is second most in the program's history, which is just one of the school record 25 wins claimed during the 2006-07 campaign.

The winner of this matchup will move into the championship game and will take on either Creighton and Missouri State.

Pacific did not light up the scoreboard in the win over Northern Colorado, but the team did just enough to slip past the Bears into the semifinal round. The Tigers shot 41.2 percent from the field, but finished with a solid 7-of-17 clip from behind the arc. Terrell Smith led the way with 15 points and eight rebounds, while Demetrece Young tallied 10 points. Sam Willard also had a solid showing, finishing the game with eight points and eight rebounds. However, on the season Willard has been the only consistent scoring threat for the Tigers, as the big man is posting 11.4 ppg, to go along with a team-high 8.3 rpg. Young is chipping in 9.3 ppg for the Tigers, despite shooting a lackluster 36.9 percent from the floor. Heading into this matchup the Tigers are only scoring 65.7 ppg, but the team has relied on its performance defensively, as Pacific is limiting the opposition to just 60.6 ppg.

The Mountaineers were simply too much for Marshall in their quarterfinal contest, as ASU poured in 80 points on the road against the Thundering Herd. Appalachian State shot 43.5 percent from the floor, and also connected on 9- of-19 shots from behind the arc. Donald Sims exploded for 30 points in the victory, while Kellen Brand added 15 points. Isaac Butts only posted nine points, but the big man pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds. Throughout the season Sims has been the best player on the floor for the Mountaineers, as the guard is averaging a healthy 20.3 ppg. Sims, who is dishing out 2.3 apg, has also done a tremendous job from behind the arc, netting 42.4 percent of his three-point attempts. As for Brand, he is contributing 11.7 ppg, but he is the only other player netting double figures for ASU. In the paint, Butts is helping out with 8.7 ppg, and is also collecting 8.3 rpg for the Mountaineers, who as a whole are producing a respectable 75.3 ppg.

The Tigers have done a tremendous job defensively this season, and should continue to play well at that end of the floor, but ultimately look for the Mountaineers to claim a win on their home floor, moving into the title game of this tournament.

Predicted Outcome: Appalachian State 68, Pacific 63
