Rockies vs. Red Sox
Play: Over 9?

A couple of struggling starters face off in this interleague contest, making the OVER a very legitimate investment opportunity. The Rockies turn to Jon Gray (1-2, 6.75 ERA) who was rocked for nine runs off eight hits and three walks over 3.1 innings in a loss to the Cardinals on Thursday. Unfortunately for Gray, a date on the road is not what the doctor ordered to get back on track as he?s already 0-2 with a ballooned 6.06 ERA away from friendly confines this year. The home side counters with Clay Buchholz (2-4, 5.92) who gave up four runs off five hits and four walks in a 4-2 loss to Cleveland on Friday. Buchholz has walked 24 batters this season and that?s nearly four walks per nine innings of work. Note that the veteran has been particularly horrible at home this year as well, going 1-3 with a deplorable 5.66 ERA.

The volatility with Jon Gray is clear. Not only does his ERA sit at a bloated 6.75, but he's coming off his worst outing of the season, a start in which the Cardinals bashed him for nine runs in 3⅓ innings. To make matters worse, he draws a road start against the Red Sox, the toughest team in baseball against right-handed pitching (128 wRC+). The underlying numbers with Gray are still strong (11.0 K/9, 50 percent GB rate), but...

Wisler now has four consecutive quality starts, and his ERA sits at 2.93 on the season. He is riding improved control to mitigate threats and he allows his defense to work for him. While his 3.73 FIP and unsustainably low .230 BABIP paint a lukewarm picture, he has made some genuine gains

Along with posting a 1.80 ERA over his past four starts, Wisler has shown an ability to quickly make necessary mechanical adjustments. His changeup is a work in progress, but his slider has been much more consistent this season.

Colorado +151 over BOSTON

Boston?s red-hot offense is difficult to bet against but that?s what we do. We sell high on unsustainable numbers and that?s precisely what Boston is putting up right now. As a result of their incredible offensive stats, Boston?s stock is through the roof right now. That means guys like Clay Buchholz are priced in a range they should not be. Buchholz?s career is hanging by a thread. After cruising through the first half of 2015, it looked like Buchholz had gotten beyond his disappointing 2014 performance but then a July elbow injury shelved him for the rest of the year and he has not been the same since. With wild ERA swings, 207 days on the DL the past three years and awful skills, Buchholz is a huge risk spotting a price like this. He has a BB/K split of 24/35 in 52 innings. His 36%/20%/44% ground-ball/line-drive/fly-ball profile isn?t pretty and it?s getting worse. Buchholz has walked 15 batters over his past 30 innings. His WHIP, ERA, xERA and batted ball profile say he should be taking back a tag every game instead of spotting one.

After two months, Jonathan Gray is carrying perhaps the biggest xERA/ERA gap we've ever seen: 6.75 ERA, 2.80 xERA. Those skills point to better days ahead for Gray, but that positive regression may not begin today. Facing the Red Sox in Fenway right now is a bad draw for any skill set, as they are carrying a staggering .885 OPS at Fenway Park. However, that?s still not going to prevent us from backing Gray here. We understand that Boston is going off on everyone but that?s not the issue. We get the vastly superior starter taking back a significant tag and it?s a bet we would make 100% of the time. We also love that the Red Sox have an important three-game set with the Blue Jays on deck, followed by a four-game set with Baltimore. That?s a seven-game road trip beginning tomorrow so we may catch them at a perfect time here too. Oh, and by the way, the Rocks can hit.

boston may be ripe for a letdown.
50 hits in last 4 games.
averaging 8 runs in last 4

but this kid jonathan gray....
has one thing going for him and that his ability to strike people out.
has a great k/9
but looking at his other numbers.....
avg. 3 walks per 9

avg. 11 hits per 9
6.05 era.

in 2 starts vs. top 10 nl hitting teams this year he has given up 9 to stlouis and 6 to pitt.

tonite he faces the best of the best in red sox.
and with one key factor against him.
the dh.
there is no pitcher in the 9 spot or a usually weak no. 8 hitter that most nl teams have.
there is no bail out for gray in this matchup, other than the strikeout.

he will have to fan a bunch tonite to have a chance.
red sox are 30 below league avg. in strikeouts

unless boston totally tanks this game?? they should get to him often and there should be lotsa runners on base.

now hopefully bukholz keeps the game competitive.

that could be a big if.

but i look at it like this, boston at this cheap a price vs. a pitcher they should get to
is worth the play.

gluck burgh....
