The Redhawks (8-16) face off with Tennessee State (18-10) today

The break from Mid-American Conference play may not be much of a break for the Miami University men?s basketball team.

The RedHawks will host Tennessee State this afternoon in an ESPN Sears BracketBuster contest at Millett Hall.

?Before the year started, they were rated as having a good team, and they haven?t disappointed,? MU coach Charlie Coles said. ?Every team we play from here on is a good team. We have no choice but to try to get better and try to win us some games.?

Miami (8-16) has never played TSU, a member of the Ohio Valley Conference. The Tigers hail from Nashville and bring an eight-game winning streak to town.

Tennessee State is 18-10 and knocked off Murray State, ranked in the top 10 nationally, on the road Feb. 9.

?If there?s any team in our league, I?d probably say Kent State,? said Coles, who was asked if the Tigers reminded him of anybody on the RedHawks? schedule.

?They score points,? he continued. ?I think offense is their forte. They?re a transition team. They?ll shoot the three, but they would much rather penetrate and get in the lane. You have to stop their dribble penetration.?

Junior Robert Covington is TSU?s top player. The 6-foot-9 forward is averaging 18.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game while sinking 56 treys ? he?s shooting 45.9 percent from 3-point range.

Five other Tigers are marking at least seven points per contest, led by sophomore guard Patrick Miller (11.1). Tennessee State is scoring 69.6 points a game and giving up an average of 67.3.

Miami is coming off a 74-59 loss at Akron, a game that saw the RedHawks get outscored 41-26 in the second half.

Senior forward Julian Mavunga is MU?s top scorer with a 16.8 average. He has moved into 14th place on the school?s all-time scoring list with 1,300 points ? Craig Tubbs is 13th at 1,307.
