Tip Leads To Gambling Raid
Authorities Say Facility Housed Illegal Operation
POSTED: 5:01 pm EST February 24, 2006
INDIANAPOLIS -- Authorities raided what they called an illegal gambling operation at an office complex on the city's southwest side Friday afternoon, 6News' Dan Spehler reported.
Sheriff's deputies entered a facility in the 2300 block of South Lynhurst Avenue and questioned a man suspected of leading the operation, authorities said. Authorities confiscated several poker-style tables and other equipment and loaded them into a truck for removal.
No arrest was immediately made, but authorities said the man would face felony charges, including tax charges, Spehler reported.
Authorities said they raided the facility after receiving an anonymous letter from someone identifying herself as a grandmother. The writer complained that her grandson was losing his college money at the facility, authorities said.
"When you have younger adults spending money that's been saved for college or you have children that don't have milk money or diaper money because mom or dad is coming here and gambling the money and losing the money, that's a big concern."
The man suspected of running the operation was cooperating with authorities, Spehler reported.
