Today?s Matchup
Left-hander Wandy Rodriguez was scheduled to start Monday night against the Padres. But he pitched the final two innings and picked up the win in Sunday?s 19-inning game in St. Louis.
Volquez, 29, has struggled of late. He is 1-2 with a 10.02 ERA in his five starts since pitching a one-hit, complete-game shutout against Houston at Petco Park on July 19. His ERA has climbed from 3.34 to 4.31 over those five bad starts. He has gone only 1 2/3, 3 1/3 and 3 2/3 innings in his last three starts. Four of those five starts were on the road, however, and Volquez is 3-5 at Petco Park this season with a 3.24 ERA in 13 starts. He is 1-0 lifetime against the Pirates with a 4.60 ERA in eight starts. He faced the Pirates on Aug. 10 in Pittsburgh and allowed six runs on seven hits and four walks in 3 1/3 innings, although the Padres rallied to win 9-8.
The Pirates will probably reach down to Triple-A Indianapolis for someone to make a spot start.... either Chris Leroux or Justin Wilson.
