Today?s Matchup

Left-hander Wandy Rodriguez was scheduled to start Monday night against the Padres. But he pitched the final two innings and picked up the win in Sunday?s 19-inning game in St. Louis.

Volquez, 29, has struggled of late. He is 1-2 with a 10.02 ERA in his five starts since pitching a one-hit, complete-game shutout against Houston at Petco Park on July 19. His ERA has climbed from 3.34 to 4.31 over those five bad starts. He has gone only 1 2/3, 3 1/3 and 3 2/3 innings in his last three starts. Four of those five starts were on the road, however, and Volquez is 3-5 at Petco Park this season with a 3.24 ERA in 13 starts. He is 1-0 lifetime against the Pirates with a 4.60 ERA in eight starts. He faced the Pirates on Aug. 10 in Pittsburgh and allowed six runs on seven hits and four walks in 3 1/3 innings, although the Padres rallied to win 9-8.

The Pirates will probably reach down to Triple-A Indianapolis for someone to make a spot start.... either Chris Leroux or Justin Wilson.

Look for this 19 inning win to bring the best out of my Buccos! Not like last years which was the beginning of the end. This team has tons of heart. Very together. Says a lot about Hurdle as well!

Both Kyle McPherson and Justin Wilson will be with the Pirates in San Diego. It's not clear who will start tonight, but it might actually be Kevin Correia, in which case McPherson and/or Wilson might be needed to eat innings in the middle of the game, since Correia pitched two innings last night. It's also not yet clear how the Pirates will clear roster space.

Neither McPherson nor Wilson have pitched in the big leagues before.

UPDATE : Expecting a bunch of moves to be announced by the Pirates in the next few hours and will use this post to keep things updated.

According to mlb.com transactions, Chad Qualls has been officially reinstated from the bereavement list. Jordy Mercer is not currently on the Pirates 25-man roster on their website, but I don't think his paternity leave has been officially announced.
