I wouldn't get too pumped up about ford or anyone else on your team for that matter cause you are about to run into a buzzsaw called Jim Calhoun and the UCONN Huskies. I'm not a UCONN fan, in fact I'm a die hard orange fan, but I follow the Big east alot, and this UCONN team is on a roll. They are stacked, Okafor, brown, gordon, robertson, etc. I'd be surprised if the Horns get by the better coached more athletic uconn team. Good luck to you, and I kinda hope you do beat them, cause if this Uconn team meets the ORANGE in the final four then my team's season will be over as well.

Point of the message is that the SMART money is on UCONN, taking the favored Horns a long shot at best, especiallt to cover.

how is uconn more athletic? how is that calculated?

texas' bench goes 10 deep. thomas, ford, ivey, buckman, mouton, boddicker, erskin, harris....

and they were here last year too. experience helps.

and has FM mentions....a probable home crowd advantage.

next year should be good too....all of these guys are coming back.

should be a great game with excellent matchups.

I've seen this UConn team play a lot, and I understand them pretty well. This is not a "great" UConn team like the ones we had seen from Donyell Marshall to Richard Hamilton, but it is a dangerous one. It's a little like the Oregon team that beat us in the dance last year. Not quite the superstar power of that team, but not that far behind. They are exactly the kind of team that tends to pull upsets in the dance.

That being said, it's really hard to get a good measure on which UConn team shows up because they have lost to a lot of flake teams while beating some good ones.

UT plays a style of defense similar to OU and Pitt... which seems to be their achilles' heel. We also play a very physical defense and tend to get ourselves AND our opponents in foul trouble.

This is where I believe depth favors the Horns. They simply don't have many big bodies to bang down low. Whereas we have several. If we get Okafor in foul trouble, we win easily.

Not many bodies to bang down low??

Not many bodies to bang down low??

CT outrebounds most teams!!!!!!!! 43 per game avg. to Texas 42

With these bodies:.......

Hilton Armstrong 6'10.... 225........sometimes starter (frosh)

Marcus White 6'8..... 220 (all he does is bang) averages as many reb per min as Okafor

Shamon Tooles 6'6" plays bigger than that

Mike Hayes 6' 8" 230 got his PT as a banger and for his tough D

Justin Brown 7' 0" 260......more rebounds per min than anyone on the team........limited minutes this year cuz CT is loaded down low.

Emeka Okafor...........dont need to tell ya about him.

Great thread, but...

Great thread, but...

does this mean the game goes over or under the total?
I like the 1st Half under as both teams really pick up the defense while big game nerves set in and out.
Then load up the over second half since one these teams will just get red hot.
Which one will win this game (in the 2nd half)
Looks like one of the best games on the board.
Winner could go a Long Way
:D

They're young......but growing up

They're young......but growing up

Taught some valuable lessons this year by some tough teachers.
and some are beginning to sink in.

Now the backcourt:

CT has the greyhounds to run past anyone and noone usually allows them the favor of trying to run with them.

Taliek Brown 6'1 ....200 at the point until he gets out of control.
much maligned but ....heart of a lion....capable of double digits..
he also rebounds and is capable when playing well.

40% 3 point shooters:

CT...Ben Gordon 42%, Tony Robertson 41%, Denham Brown 42%, and Rashaad Anderson 39%

Texas......Boddicker at 43% Harris at 38%

Now DEFENSE..........CT......Ds the 3 to 30% Texas...39%
CT overall.........better D opposition 41%fg% Texas 45%

Texas will have fewer turnovers and more personal fouls unless
CT gets the hometown ticky-tack attack to put Okafor on the bench..........Then the "boyz" come in ...and they're foul prone..(ask Carmelo)

Should be a good one .........BUT......dont think Texas is deeper
or better.......except at the point
Ben Gordon did shut down a pretty good point in Troy Bell recently
so they wont be intimidated.

bear, when I said UConn doesn't have the bodies to bang down low, I was referring to the 5 spot and some of the 4's. Justin Brown is a non-factor and he hardly ever gets any meaningful playing time. Mike Hayes will relieve Emeka if he gets in foul trouble and he can do some banging.

Hilton Armstrong, the 6'10 freshman at the 4 spot lacks the muscle to bang down low and only gets about 10 minutes per game. His backup, Marcus White, is a rebounding machine but can't score much.

I'm already aware of UConn's backcourt. Ben Gordon scares me the most but we'll throw Ivey on him and hope he sticks his shit like glue.

Like I said before though, we play a similar defense to OU and Pitt, whom they struggled against, not to mention some suck ass teams early in the year.

dumb thread but I will bite

dumb thread but I will bite

this thread is so stupid and this is easy to see from the opening line "I wouldn't get too pumped up about ford or anyone else on your team for that matter..." Why would we be getting pumped about these guys right now? Most of us have been high on this team since last year's sweet 16 and this year's opening win against Georgia. I mean why would be getting pumped on the Naismith player of the year in college hoops? or a team that was consistently ranked in the top 5 all year?

fact is there are two great teams playing on friday in san anotonio and it should make for a great game. I will be there and I hope that the rest of Austin makes it down, but either way it should be a good one. Is Okafor good? yes Is Jimmy C a great head coach? yes Can Texas play with these guys? yes, they are big game tested this year. they were up on ND late(neutral site), were up on zona late in tucson, were up on kansas in lawrence late, and then they finally start getting tough down the stretch against OU and won both of those. should be good, but to say they stink or are way overrated is close to being idiotic. should have lost to purdue? just like you should have and could have lost to BYU. you guys are nuts...it will be a good game and if texas plays like they are capable they can win as well. Hopefully both teams play great and push it over the total...that will be my play on this one

Don't talk about early season losses, cause they don't matter at this point, NOT AT ALL.

Bear,

No disrepects, but Texas can bang just as well and are very similar in size only quicker IMO. Hilton Armstrong in a no factor, sure he's 6-10 210 but who cares when this freshmen will barely get off the bench he iss only averaging 3 minutes per game in this tournament....he won't see much more vs. Texas. Marcus White is a tough kid who likes to bang but also a Freshmen...As far as Tooles (a total of 2 minutes played in this tourn, won't see much more), J. Brown (a wopping 3 minutes total played in this tourn and won't see much more on an average) both are non-factors as they can't do much from the bench. So that leaves:

Okafur 6-9 252 (Solph)
white 6-8 215 (fresh)
D Brown 6-5 205 (fresh)
Hayes 6-8 236 averaging about 13 minutes in the tourn

to do all the banging with

James Thomas 6-8 235 (JR)
Boddicker 6-8 228 (JR)
Erskin 6-5 218 (SR)
Buckman 6-8 220 (Fresh)

LOOKS PRETTY SIMILAR TO ME!!!!

Now look at the guard play size:

Mouton 6-4 205 (JR)
Ivy 6-3 192 (JR)
Ford 5-10 165 (So) plays like a SR
Harris 6-5 197 (So)

B Gordon 6-2 195 (So)
T. Brown 6-1 200 (JR)
Robertson 6-2 200 (Sr)
Anderson 6-5 190 (Fresh)

Size is pretty even, but quickness IMO Texas has the advantage. Both teams play tough Defense and Okafur should cut off the lane from Ford coming in and dishing off, but I really like the experience in Thomas, Mouton, IVY, coupled with what Ford brings to the table. UConn is tough and is probably one of the tougher match-ups for Texas, but I really believe that playing in San Antonio when only add to the advantages that IMO Texas already has....The Horns will stampede on!

nighthorse, maybe you're forgetting who helped SEND your dad to the NIT? How could you forget about the '64 Brylcream Classic game in Madison Square Garden where your dad was clearly overmatched by the "big man" down low and basically handed him his ass on a platter?

Just admit it, your dad is washed up and gets blown out too much.
