Preview: Diamondbacks (32-49) at Rockies (42-38)

If early results are any indication, Mark Reynolds' on-camera rant may have been just what the Arizona Diamondbacks needed.

When Reynolds implored his teammates to play harder, however, it's safe to say he wasn't talking about Dan Haren.

The NL's ERA leader will be on the mound Sunday, when the Diamondbacks will look to build on a comeback victory over the Colorado Rockies and win the final game of their series in Denver.

Arizona's third baseman went on his rant after a 5-0 loss Friday, when the Diamondbacks had nearly as many errors (three) as hits (four). It was the last-place Diamondbacks' third straight defeat and they had scored two total runs during the skid.

"It's frustrating as (expletive) out there. It's to the point where stuff's got to change," Reynolds said after Arizona's 11th loss in 13 games. "You can give all the rah-rah speeches you want and have all the team meetings you want, yell at guys or whatever, but guys got to give a damn.

"I don't really see it."

The Diamondbacks (32-49) responded Saturday, rallying from an early 4-0 deficit to win 11-7. Reynolds homered in the fourth inning, but the club did most of its damage in a six-run eighth, sparked by pinch hitter Chris Young's tiebreaking three-run double.

Stephen Drew added a two-run home run and finished a single shy of the cycle to help put the Diamondbacks in position for what would be their second series victory since May 25.

"What I said (Friday) wasn't to call anybody out or (expletive) anybody off," Reynolds said. "We came out and responded. That's huge. If we can't build off this one, I don't know what it will take for us."

The Rockies (42-38) are still 22-6 since June 4, but they'll have to go through Haren to avoid losing their second straight series.

Haren (7-5, 2.19 ERA) has thrown at least seven innings and allowed two or fewer runs in each of his last seven starts, going 4-0 with a 1.73 ERA. Perhaps more impressively, he's struck out 50 and walked six in that stretch.

He gave up one run in seven innings of a 6-2 win over Cincinnati on Tuesday, chipping in with a home run and a double to raise his batting average to .286 (10 for 35).

"I don't want to speak for anyone else, but when I go out there, I get 110 pitches a game and put as much into it as I can on every pitch," Haren said Saturday, responding to Reynolds' comments. "After the game ... I can look into the mirror and tell myself that I've given that effort. I hope that everyone else can."

Despite a 1-1 record against the Rockies this year, Haren has allowed just one run in 14 innings, striking out 18. Since joining the Diamondbacks before last season, Haren is 4-1 with a 2.41 ERA in six meetings with Colorado.

He'll face Ubaldo Jimenez, who is 5-3 with a 2.79 ERA in his last 11 starts. Jimenez (6-7, 3.75) did not get a decision Monday after allowing two runs in seven innings of Colorado's 4-2 loss in 13 innings to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The right-hander has tossed 14 shutout innings in his last two starts against Arizona, including seven in a 3-0 victory on April 7.

Baltimore Orioles (36-45) at LA Angels of Anaheim (44-35), 3:35 p.m.

Baltimore Orioles (36-45) at LA Angels of Anaheim (44-35), 3:35 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Baltimore - Rich Hill (3-2, 7.08) LA Angels - Joe Saunders (8-5, 4.24)

Joe Saunders will try to rebound from a disastrous start when he takes the hill for the LA Angels of Anaheim in the finale of a four- game set against the Baltimore Orioles at Angel Stadium.

The last time Saunders was on the bump he lasted just 3 2/3 innings against Texas, and surrendered eight runs on six hits and five walks. The loss dropped the southpaw to 8-5 on the year and brought his earned run average to 4.24.

Fortunately Saunders has a chance to bounce back against a team he has pitched extremely well against in the Orioles. In six career outings against Baltimore, Saunders is 5-0 with a 3.00 earned run average, and that includes a victory earlier this year against the O's.

Saunders' counterpart will be Rich Hill, who has just one win in his last five starts. Hill was no match for Boston in his last outing as the southpaw was rocked for nine runs -- seven earned -- on nine hits and three walks in 3 1/3 innings.

This will be Hill's first career start against the Angels.

On Saturday, Vladimir Guerrero capped a six-run eighth inning with a monster three-run homer, as Los Angeles overcame an early deficit to wallop Baltimore, 11-4.

Torii Hunter finished 2-for-4 with a walk and three RBI for Los Angeles, which has won has won eight of its last 11 games. Bobby Abreu collected three hits, walked, scored twice and knocked in a run, while Chone Figgins and Juan Rivera each drove in a run.

Angels starter Sean O'Sullivan gave up four runs on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings, but did not factor in the decision. Jason Bulger (3-1) hurled 1 1/3 scoreless innings to earn the victory.

"We banged out 17 hits and with Vladimir going deep, that was definitely nice," said Angels manager Mike Scioscia. "A good offensive night."

Adam Jones went 3-for-4 and had two RBI for the Orioles, who have lost five of seven.

Jason Berken got the start for Baltimore and allowed three runs -- two earned -- on seven hits in four-plus innings of work. Danys Baez (4-3) yielded two runs and three hits in his lone inning to take the loss.

The Angels swept a two-game series from the Orioles at Camden Yards back in April and went 6-3 against Baltimore last season. The O's are just 5-14 in Anaheim since the start of the 2006 campaign.

After losing in a ballpark where he's never won, Joe Saunders gets a chance to bounce back against a team that has never beaten him.

Saunders looks to improve to 6-0 in his career against the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday when the Los Angeles Angels try to capture a four-game home series.

The left-hander is a Virginia native who always has plenty of friends and family on hand when he pitches in Baltimore. Saunders (8-5, 4.24 ERA) is 5-0 with a 4.15 ERA in six lifetime starts versus the Orioles, including a 7-5 road victory April 28 in which he allowed four runs over six innings.

He's done an excellent job in his career against the Orioles' Brian Roberts, who is 3 for 17 (.176) versus him, and Nick Markakis, who is 4 for 18 (.222)

Saunders should be happy to see Baltimore (36-45) after allowing a season-high eight runs over a season-low 3 2-3 innings Tuesday in a 9-5 loss at Texas. He fell to 0-5 with an 11.67 ERA in five career starts at Rangers Ballpark.

"Obviously he doesn't feel comfortable. I don't know if it's the mound, a good offensive club," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "He has trouble executing pitches as consistently as he can."

Saunders is more comfortable at home this year, going 4-2 with a 2.95 ERA in eight starts.

Los Angeles (44-35) rallied from a four-run deficit in the fifth inning Saturday for an 11-4 victory. The Angels remained tied for first place in the AL West with Texas, which visits Anaheim for a three-game set beginning Monday.

Vladimir Guerrero hit a three-run homer as part of a six-run rally in the eighth inning and drove in four runs. Guerrero's homer gave the Angels 34 in their last 21 games after connecting 44 times in their first 58.

"It took us a while to get going, but at the end of the night with Vlad going deep, that was definitely nice," Scioscia said.

Bobby Abreu added three hits and Chone Figgins scored three times as they continue to torment the Orioles. Each player has scored four runs in this series, with Abreu going 5 for 11 and Figgins 5 for 12.

The Orioles haven't gotten much from Roberts and Markakis in the last three games. Roberts is 3 for 13 and Markakis 2 for 11 for Baltimore, which has lost five of six on the road.

Baltimore starter Rich Hill (3-2, 7.08) has lasted past the sixth inning in just one of his nine outings, and hasn't pitched past the fifth in his last two. He was pounded for a season-high nine runs over 3 1-3 innings Tuesday, but escaped without a decision in an 11-10 victory over Boston.

Despite Hill's poor numbers this year, the Orioles are 7-2 in his starts. The left-hander has never faced the Angels.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Los Angeles - Chad Billingsley (9-4, 3.12) San Diego - Josh Banks (1-0, 3.38)

Chad Billingsley tries to win his 10th game of the season this afternoon when the Los Angeles Dodgers play the rubber match of their three-game series with the San Diego Padres at Petco Park.

Billingsley, though, is winless in his last three starts and was charged with the loss on Tuesday against Colorado, which managed three runs and five hits off of him in 7 2/3 innings. Despite matching a season-high with 11 strikeouts, Billingsley was on the wrong end of the 3-0 decision, dropping him to 9-4 to go along with a 3.12 earned run average.

The 24-year-old right-hander has beaten the Padres three times already this season and is 8-3 lifetime against them with a 2.62 ERA in 16 games, 12 of which have been starts.

San Diego will counter with Josh Banks, who will be making his second start of the season. Banks, filling in for the injured Wade LeBlanc, picked up his first win of the season on Tuesday against Houston, as he held the Astros to three runs and five hits in seven innings.

Banks has never faced the Dodgers.

Los Angeles got a home run from Manny Ramirez on Saturday, but San Diego scored six times over the seventh and eighth innings to pull out a 7-4 win.

Everth Cabrera, David Eckstein and Adrian Gonzalez -- the Padres' top three hitters -- combined to go 6-for-14 with six runs batted in, helping San Diego snap a three-game losing streak.

Padres starter Josh Geer allowed two runs over 6 1/3 innings, while Greg Burke (1-0) took the win after getting the final two outs of the seventh.

Ramirez, who returned from his 50-game suspension Friday, belted the 534th home run of his career, tying him with Jimmie Foxx for 16th on the career list, but it wasn't enough to help the Dodgers win for the third consecutive game.

"I think this is his comfort zone, in that batter's box, in the ballpark, in the clubhouse," Dodgers manager Joe Torre said of Ramirez. "I think it's going to take a little time to get the rust off and get used to what he is doing."

After LA starter Randy Wolf gave up one run in six innings, in which he struck out eight, Ronald Belisario (1-3) gave up three runs in the seventh while recording one out. Ramon Troncoso allowed three more runs -- all unearned -- after replacing Belisario.

The Dodgers have won eight of 12 matchups with the Padres this season and 12 of the last 17 contests between the clubs.

Preview: Dodgers (51-30) at Padres (35-45)

Game: 3
Venue: PETCO Park
Date: July 05, 2009 4:05 PM EDT

Now that the question of when Manny Ramirez will hit a home run has been answered, the Los Angeles Dodgers will see if their slugger can produce in a victory.

Ramirez and the Dodgers try to take two of three from the San Diego Padres on Sunday in the series finale at Petco Park.

In his second game back, and fifth plate appearance, following a 50-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball's drug policy, Ramirez hit a first-inning solo shot off Josh Geer on Saturday for his seventh homer of the season.

The Dodgers (51-30), though, closed out their first half of the season with a 7-4 loss.

"I think this is his comfort zone, in that batter's box, in the ballpark, in the clubhouse, something that he hasn't had for a couple of months,' Dodgers manager Joe Torre said of Ramirez. "I think it's going to take a little time, but I think it's just him getting the rust off and getting used to what he's doing.'

Ramirez went 0 for 3 with a walk in the Dodgers' 6-3 series-opening victory Friday.

He needs one homer to move past Jimmie Foxx (534) for sole possession of 16th place on the all-time list and two to match Mickey Mantle (536) for 15th.

The Dodgers still hold a 6 1/2-game advantage over San Francisco for the NL West lead. With six losses in its last 10 games - including three of four on the road - Los Angeles is trying to close out the first leg of its nine-game trip on a positive note.

Giving the ball to Chad Billingsley (9-4, 3.12 ERA) could help. The right-hander is 3-0 with a 3.38 ERA in three starts against the Padres this season, and in 12 career starts versus San Diego, he is 7-3 with a 2.65 ERA.

The Dodgers, however, have lost Billingsley's last three starts. In Tuesday's 3-0 defeat to Colorado, Billingsley tied a season high with 11 strikeouts, but allowed three runs and five hits over 7 2-3 innings.

"Billingsley was great,' Torre told the team's official Web site. "He went after it tonight and certainly pitched well enough to win. He battled as he always does, and his command was much better than it has been recently.'

Billingsley had six strikeouts and nine walks in his previous two starts.

San Diego (35-45) counters with Josh Banks (1-0, 3.38), who makes his first appearance against Los Angeles. The right-hander was called up from Triple-A Portland on June 16 and made two relief appearances before taking left-hander Wade LeBlanc's spot in the rotation.

In his first start Tuesday, Banks picked up his first win since July 26. He surrendered three runs and five hits over seven innings of a 4-3 triumph over Houston.

"Banks did a great job of just holding them to three and giving us a chance," infielder David Eckstein told the Padres' official Web site. "It could have easily been six, but he kept it at three. He gave us a chance to come back."

Eckstein had a pair of RBI singles while rookie Everth Cabrera added two hits, three RBIs and two runs as San Diego snapped a three-game skid Saturday.

Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez is 3 for 9 with three RBIs in the series. He batted .171 (7 for 41) with three RBIs in his previous 13 games.

San Diego has won two of three over Los Angeles after losing seven of the first nine matchups this season.

Houston Astros (38-41) at San Francisco Giants (44-36), 4:05 p.m.

Houston Astros (38-41) at San Francisco Giants (44-36), 4:05 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Houston - Roy Oswalt (4-4, 4.02) San Francisco - Randy Johnson (8-5, 4.70)

Roy Oswalt and Randy Johnson will have a tough time duplicating the magnificent performance from Tim Lincecum on Saturday when the two starters face off this afternoon in the finale of the three-game set between the Houston Astros and San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park.

Lincecum fired seven innings of three-hit shutout ball, and the Giants bats produced a second straight solid effort in a 9-0 win against the Astros on Saturday.

Fresh off being named the NL's Pitcher of the Month for June, Lincecum (9-2), won for the fifth time in his last six starts and for the ninth time in his last 10 decisions.

The reigning Cy Young Award winner for the Senior Circuit struck out nine, walked two and walked twice himself, scoring both times. He has now allowed two runs or less in eight of his last nine outings and has fanned at least eight batters in each of his last five starts.

"He is one of the best. Those elite players get on a roll and it's impressive. He is commanding all his pitches. It's enjoyable to watch," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.

San Francisco pounded out the nine runs on 12 hits one day after taking the opener to this three-game set in similar fashion, 13-0. Aaron Rowand and Randy Winn had a pair of RBI each, while Pablo Sandoval reached base four times with two hits and two walks, driving in a run in the win.

Former Giants right-hander Russ Ortiz (3-4) was tagged for nine hits and eight runs with five walks in a 5 2/3-inning start. Houston had entered the series winners in six of its previous eight but have managed just seven hits in the first two games versus the Giants.

Johnson will once again try to hold the Astros' bats at bay this afternoon, as he attempts to win his third consecutive start and his fourth straight decision. Johnson won for the fifth time in his last six decisions on Tuesday in St. Louis, as he allowed just three runs and four hits in 5 1/3 innings to up his record to 8-5 to go along with a 4.70 ERA.

The 45-year-old left-hander has faced the Astros seven times and is 4-1 with a 3.64 ERA.

Oswalt, meanwhile, is 4-4 with a 4.02 ERA on the year, but is coming off his best effort of the season in his last start. Oswalt went the distance to beat the San Diego Padres on Monday, limiting them to just a run and two hits, while striking out eight.

The 31-year-old righty is 4-5 lifetime against the Giants with a 3.98 ERA in 12 starts.

Houston and San Francisco are meeting for the first time since the Astros took seven of the eight meetings a year ago. Houston went 3-1 at AT&T Park in 2008.

The Giants last swept the Astros in a three-game set from May 21-23, 2007.

Preview: Astros (38-41) at Giants (44-36)

Game: 3
Venue: AT&T Park
Date: July 05, 2009 4:05 PM EDT

The Houston Astros were shut out in the first two games of their series with the San Francisco Giants. They don't catch a break in the finale with a red-hot Randy Johnson scheduled to be on the mound.

The five-time Cy Young Award winner will try to win his fourth straight decision Sunday as the Giants look to push their home winning streak to six.

Houston (38-41) came to San Francisco on Friday with wins in six of its previous eight games and a chance to be at or above the .500 mark for the first time since it was 2-1. A heavy dose of outstanding pitching by the Giants (44-36) has erased those hopes.

San Francisco rookie Ryan Sadowski allowed three hits in seven innings of a 13-0 victory Friday. Tim Lincecum did the same Saturday, adding nine strikeouts in a 9-0 win.

The Astros have totaled seven hits and struck out 16 times in the series. Michael Bourn and Miguel Tejada - the top hitters in the Houston lineup - are 1 for 16.

If Johnson (8-5, 4.70 ERA) can turn in an effort similar to that of Sadowski and Lincecum, the Giants will have a good chance for their first three-game home sweep of the Astros since May 21-23, 2007. Johnson is 3-0 with a 3.60 ERA in his last four outings.

The Big Unit lasted 5 1-3 innings and gave up three runs - all on two homers by Albert Pujols - to beat St. Louis 6-3 on Tuesday.

"My individual battles are obviously there, but I'm facing eight or nine hitters and if one guy has his day against me but we win, I feel like I did my job," Johnson said.

Johnson is 4-1 with a 3.64 ERA in seven career starts against Houston, and will have some more interesting individual matchups Sunday. No batter has faced him more than Ivan Rodriguez, who is 19 for 76 (.250) with 17 strikeouts versus the left-hander. Tejada is 16 for 42 (.381) against Johnson.

The only time Johnson lost to Houston was Aug. 17 when he was opposed by Astros ace Roy Oswalt (4-4, 4.02) for the first time. Oswalt struck out 10 and gave up one hit in eight innings, while Johnson allowed three runs in seven innings as Houston beat Arizona 3-0.

Oswalt, though, has struggled at AT&T Park, going 2-5 with a 4.96 ERA in eight starts.

The right-hander moved to 4-0 with a 2.83 ERA in five starts versus the NL West this year after pitching a two-hitter Monday in a 3-1 victory at San Diego.

"I feel better than I did at the beginning of the season," Oswalt said. "It seems like I'm throwing the ball better, the balls have a little more carry and hopefully I can carry on the rest of the year."

Oswalt will get his first look at Giants first baseman Pablo Sandoval, who is 4 for 7 with a homer and four RBIs in this series. Sandoval is hitting .396 (38 for 96) with eight homers and 20 RBIs in his last 26 games.

Giants outfielder Fred Lewis hasn't started in this series, but could be in the lineup Sunday. Lewis is 8 for 14 versus Oswalt.
