On the course!
May GF drives a '99 Camry. Her door openner took a shit on her, and the shop wants to soak her $110 for a new one. The guy there told her she would be better off picking one up on EBay for a lot less, and they would activate it for her.

EBay had almost nothing for a '99.

My question: Can you program any old remote for any old car, or does it have to be specific?

I mean, if I can pick up a 2003 remote, and it will work, WTF, right?

they only work with in the years the codes were the same, at least for a chey tahoe. I just googled it when I bought one and found a site with some for around 25 dollars. They send you instructions on how to program it, it is actually pretty simple. good luck. 110 sounds like waaaayy to much in my experience.

The key actually has been giving her quite a few problems. Especially with the winter weather.

Here are the programming instructions!!!

1. Start with key out of the ignition, driver door is open (all others closed),
and driver door is unlocked.

Insert key into the ignition (don?t turn it) and pull it out

Perform these steps within 40 seconds:
a. Using the power lock switch on the driver?s door, perform 5 lock/unlock cycles with lock.

Use an even pace and try to go about one cycle per second. 1 cycle = 1 lock and 1 unlock)

b. Close, then open driver?s door.

Perform these steps within 40 seconds:
a. Using the power lock switch on the driver?s door, perform 5 lock/unlock cycles starting
with lock.
Use an even pace and try to go about one cycle per second. (1 cycle = 1 lock and 1unlock)

b. Insert the key in the ignition cylinder.

c. Turn the ignition to ON (as far as you can without cranking the engine) then back to OFF.
d. Turn the ignition to ON (as far as you can without cranking the engine) then back to OFF.

e. Remove the key from the ignition.

Within 3 seconds, the power door locks should cycle automatically indicating successful entry
into programming mode.
Return to step 1 if the locks do not cycle at this point.

Perform these steps within 40 seconds:
a. Press the lock and unlock buttons on the transmitter simultaneously for 1 second.

b. Immediately after letting go of the lock and unlock buttons, hit the lock button by itself and
hold for 2 seconds. Within 3 seconds, the door locks should cycle once indicating successful
programming.
If the door locks don?t cycle, or cycle twice, repeat steps a and b-your remote has not
been accepted.

c. Repeat steps a and b in step 6 for each new transmitter.

7. Close driver door.

Hope this helps!!

Before you throw the transmitter in the trash, try replacing the battery(in the transmitter). When transmitters stop working it usually is just a weak/dead battery. Take it to a Radio Shack or similar store and they should have the battery you need (probably a flat watch type battery). You will however need to go through the reprogramming procedure after replacing it. Worth a shot.

I didn't see anything in the thread that you tried replacing the battery. So long as you performed the programming procedure correctly, and it still isn't functional, it sounds like it's time for a new one. You could possibly find one cheap at a salvage yard but that would be a longshot. Worth a few phone calls to save a couple bucks.
Good luck with it.

You probably would not be able to use a "2003" Remote on a 1999. Camry changed alot on the Camry in 2000. The codes are normally done for a certain number of years, For example!

1997-1999..That may all be 1 Key
2000-2003 That Would be another Key!

You need the actual "Remote" for "Keyless Entry" Correct? Not the actual "KEY" I found quite a few on ebay a few under $20.00, however not sure its the exact one you need?

I have a Viper Alarm on my car, I needed a new remote. Purchased it on Ebay, then bought it to an Audio/Detailing Store. They programmed it for me at No Charge! I tossed the guy $10 anyway. Between that and saving it on ebay I saved probably over $100. I found quite a few on ebay by typing in "99 Toyota Camry Remote"

Then I am not sure which one you would need! I'll leave that up to you! Hope this helps!
