Bruins deal Grahame to Lightning

TSN.ca Staff 1/13/2003

The Bruins have traded goaltender John Grahame to the Tampa Bay Lightning, paving the way for Steve Shields to become Boston's full-time starter.

Shields will get his third straight start tonight against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Bruins received a fourth round pick in the 2004 draft in exchange for Grahame.

Andrew Raycroft has been recalled from Providence of the American Hockey League to assume the role of Shield's back-up.

The Bruins acquired Shileds in the off-season to compete with Grahame for the starting job made vacant when Boston opted not to re-sign Byron Dafoe.

Shields is 9-7-2 with a 2.69 goals against average this season. Grahame was 11-9-2 with a 2.70 goals against average this season. In his last two starts, however, Grahame was 0-2-0 with a 6.50 GAA and a terrible .814 save percentage.

At 22, Raycroft is considered the Bruins' future in goal, but he has a chance to become a factor sooner than later. A former Major Junior Goaltener of the Year, Raycroft is 4-6-1 with a 2.94 GAA in 16 career NHL starts.

Raycroft has been outstanding with Providence this season, posting a 15-8-2 record with a 2.66 GAA and a .913 save percentage.

McLaren against Osgood... I think that is not very wise for them to do. They had a mediocre goalie in Dafoe. They tried Grahame, didn't work. Osgood is another mediocre goalie, in my mind.

I really can't see the Isles dealing DiPietro. He is their future goaltender, and I think Snow and Osgood are over priced for their production. It has been reported that the Isles already turned down a McLaren for DiPietro swap a while ago.
