Wednesday's Tip Sheet
By Brad Young

Most of the focus this time of year is on the NBA Playoffs or NHL Playoffs, but there is still plenty of value concerning Major League Baseball. Today?s Tip Sheet will focus on two games in the National League and the American League. The baseball season is now almost a month old, meaning some solid trends are starting to appear in the stat sheet. Now let?s take a closer look at four key contests on Wednesday?s schedule.

**Cardinals (Wainwright) at Braves (Vazquez)**

-Las Vegas Sports Consultants installed Atlanta as a $1.25 home ?chalk? over St. Louis, with the total set at 8 ? ?under? (minus $1.20). This National League matchup is slated to start at 7:10 p.m. ET.

-St. Louis right-hander Adam Wainwright (2-0, 2.70 ERA) picked up a no-decision Friday against Chicago. The five-year veteran went seven innings while allowing three runs (one earned) on seven hits with a walk and six strikeouts.

-The Cardinals eventually won that contest as a $1.28 home favorite, 4-3, while the combined seven runs went ?under? the 8 ?-run closing total. St. Louis is 3-1 in Wainwright?s four starts, while the ?over? has also gone 3-1.

-The 27-year-old beat the Braves last season as a $2.00 home ?chalk,? 18-3, tossing six innings while being reached for one run on five hits (one home run) with a walk and four strikeouts. The combined 21 runs soared ?over? the nine-run closing total.

-Atlanta?s Javier Vazquez (2-1, 2.63 ERA) has won his last two starts after knocking off Cincinnati Friday as a $1.00 road selection, 4-3. The Puerto Rico native went six innings, surrendering two runs (one earned) on seven hits with a walk and nine strikeouts.

-The combined seven runs failed to eclipse the 8 ?-run closing total.

-Vazquez, a 12-year veteran who pitched for the Chicago White Sox the previous few seasons, has not started against St. Louis the last three years.

**Dodgers (Stults) at Giants (Lincecum)**

-LVSC opened San Francisco as a $1.50 home favorite over Los Angeles, with the total listed at 7 ?. This NL West contest is scheduled to begin at 10:15 p.m. ET.

-Los Angeles hurler Eric Stults (2-0, 3.52 ERA) received his first no-decision of the young season after tossing five innings in Friday?s effort against Colorado. The four-year veteran was reached for three runs on seven hits with five walks and three strikeouts.

-The Dodgers eventually prevailed as a $1.13 road underdog, 6-5, while the combined 11 runs slithered ?over? the 10 ?-run closing total. The ?over? is 2-0-1 during his three starts this year.

-The southpaw beat San Francisco April 16 as a $1.70 home favorite, 7-2, going five innings while yielding two runs on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts. The combined nine runs landed directly on the closing total.

-San Francisco?s Tim Lincecum (1-1, 2.96 ERA) earned his first victory of the year by upending Arizona Friday as a $1.25 road ?chalk,? 5-1. The reigning NL Cy Young recipient went eight innings while being reached for the lone run on five hits with a walk and 12 strikeouts.

-The combined six runs went ?under? the 8 ?-run closing total, helping the ?under? cash his second consecutive start.

-The 24-year-old beat the Dodgers last season as a $1.70 home favorite, 3-1, going seven innings while allowing one run on four hits with two walks and 13 strikeouts. The combined four runs went ?under? the seven-run closing total.

**Red Sox (Lester) at Indians (Carmona)**

-LVSC lists Boston as a $1.25 road ?chalk? over Cleveland, with the total set at 9 ? ?under? (minus $1.20). This American League tilt is slated to start at 7:05 p.m. ET.

-Boston southpaw Jon Lester (1-2, 4.88 ERA) is off Friday?s no-decision against New York. The 6-foot-2 hurler tossed six innings, surrendering two runs on seven hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.

-The Red Sox eventually won that affair as a $1.40 home favorite, 5-4, while the combined nine runs slithered ?under? the 9 ?-run closing total. The ?under? has cashed his last two starts.

-Lester went 1-0 against the Indians last year in two starts, going a combined 10 1/3 innings while yielding five runs on seven hits with six walks and seven strikeouts. The Red Sox won as a $1.15 road underdog, 6-4, and as a $1.75 home ?chalk,? 6-1.

-Cleveland pitcher Fausto Carmona (1-3, 7.36 ERA) hopes to rebound from Friday?s setback to Minnesota as a $1.45 home favorite, 5-1. The Dominican Republic native went six innings, yielding five runs (four earned) on eight hits (one home run) with two walks and seven strikeouts.

-The combined six runs failed to topple the 10-run closing total, helping the ?under? go 2-1 his last three starts.

-Carmona escaped with a no-decision against the Red Sox last season, lasting just one inning while surrendering four runs on five hits with a walk and a strikeout. The Indians eventually dropped that contest as a $1.47 road underdog, 5-4, while the combined nine runs went ?under? the 10-run closing total.

**Rays (Kazmir) at Twins (Blackburn)**

-Tampa Bay ace pitcher Scott Kazmir (3-1, 3.97 ERA) cruised past Oakland Friday as a $1.30 road ?chalk,? 8-2, tossing six scoreless innings on two hits with three walks and two strikeouts.

-The combined 10 runs went ?over? the eight-run closing total, helping the ?over? improve to 4-0 this season when he?s pitching.

-Kazmir beat the Twins last season as a $1.55 home favorite, 7-2, pitching six scoreless innings on five hits with a walk and five strikeouts. The combined nine runs went ?over? the eight-run closing total.

-Minnesota righty Nick Blackburn (1-1, 4.44 ERA) is coming off of his first victory of the season after Friday?s win over Cleveland as a $1.35 road underdog, 5-1. The 27-year-old was reached for one run on six hits with no walks and four strikeouts over seven innings.

-The combined six runs failed to eclipse the 10-run closing total, helping the ?under? improve to 2-1 his last three outings.

-Blackburn fell to the Rays last year in his lone start against them as a $1.11 road underdog, 11-1. The 6-foot-4 hurler survived just 1 1/3 innings, allowing six runs on six hits with three walks and no strikeouts. The combined 12 runs went ?over? the nine-run closing total.

Wednesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
By Covers.com

Streaking

Zack Greinke (Kansas City Royals)

Coming off consecutive complete-game efforts, the Kansas City right-hander looks to become the major leagues' first five-game winner Wednesday night when the Royals continue a four-game home set with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Greinke (4-0, 0.00 ERA) continued his dominance that began late last season after giving up an unearned run and three hits while striking out 10 for the second straight contest in a 6-1 win over Detroit at home on Friday. The 25-year-old pitched a seven-hitter in a 2-0 victory at Texas on April 18 in his previous start.

"When Greinke pitches, the Royals are as good as any team in baseball," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said.

Johan Santana (New York Mets)

Johan Santana will look to continue his nearly flawless start Wednesday afternoon, but he'll also be looking for revenge against the only team - and only pitcher - to beat him as the Mets and visiting Florida Marlins play the decisive finale of their three-game series.

New York's second through fifth starters have a combined 6.64 ERA in 16 outings - leaving Manuel to speculate about possible changes - but its ace has lived up to his billing. Santana (3-1, 0.70 ERA) has been the NL's best starting pitcher, yielding two earned runs in 25 2-3 innings while striking out 37.

Tim Lincecum (San Francisco Giants)

Lincecum has pitched every bit like an ace his last two times out, and he'll look to keep rolling Wednesday night as his San Francisco Giants play the decisive third game of their series against the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers.

Lincecum is 2-0 with a 1.59 ERA in three games - two starts - against Los Angeles (14-7). He struck out 13 over seven innings in his lone start versus the Dodgers last season, yielding a run and four hits in a 3-1 home win Sept. 28.

Slumping

Shane Loux (Los Angeles Angels)

Shane Loux (0-2, 6.61 ERA) looks to rebound from his worst performance of the season for Los Angeles. The right-hander's ERA jumped nearly three full runs after he was reached for seven runs and 11 hits over four innings Friday in an 8-3 home loss to Seattle.

He made his only career appearance against the Orioles on Aug. 5, throwing two scoreless innings of relief in the Angels' 3-0 loss
