Bowling Green will bring some tricky schemes to Bronco Stadium on Saturday.

On offense, the Falcons run a spread offense and will line up three different starters at quarterback ? quarterback Tyler Sheehan, wide receiver Anthony Turner and wide receiver Freddie Barnes.

The Falcons also operate without a huddle for nearly the entire game.

Turner was the starting quarterback in 2006 and he played tailback in 2007.

?You?ve just got to pay attention to where he is and everybody needs to know he?s a threat when he?s at quarterback because he?s a physical, strong runner,? Boise State coach Chris Petersen said.

Defensively, the Falcons like to move their linemen around ? looping tackles around to the outside, for example. Senior end Diyral Briggs (6-foot-4, 230 pounds) has five sacks in two games against Pittsburgh and Minnesota.

?I think their defense is the scarier part of their team for us,? Boise State tailback Ian Johnson said. ?They like to move around a lot. ? These things are unorthodox for us to say the least.?

???

Other highlights from Johnson?s weekly press conference:

On having a second-week bye: ?It definitely felt like it was more of a scrimmage the first game, not because of the opponent, but because of the amount of time you had afterward and the attitude you had afterward. It was nice to have the time off, but we like once we get rolling to keep rolling.?

On the offensive line: ?Of all the groups in the last game they were the one that stood out in my mind ? very few mistakes, very assignment sound, they were burying guys, they were playing like a big, dirty bunch of 300-pounders, and I love it.?

On Nevada tailback Luke Lippincott, the defending WAC rushing champ, missing the rest of the season with a knee injury: ?That?s one of the things we know being ballcarriers ? we?re hunted every single play. We?re expected to go out there with a certain intensity. It really is just one play away, but you can never play scared because when you play scared and realize all these things that are against you, that?s when they start affecting you. ? I?m really discouraged to know he?s not going to be playing.?

???

There?s a chance freshman left tackle Nate Potter will make his much-anticipated college debut this week, but he might not be able to play a full game. Potter has missed a bunch of practice time over the past year with various injuries.

?He?s not going to be in game form,? Petersen said. ?There?s no way.?

Scouting Bowling Green

OFFENSE

The Falcons operate a spread offense with multiple formations and plenty of funk - including three starters who line up at quarterback. They emphasize the passing portion of the spread, chucking 87 passes in the first two weeks. They have run the ball 54 times.

Quarterback Tyler Sheehan, a returning starter, has completed 63.1 percent of his passes this season. His top weapon so far has been running back Chris Bullock, who has 140 total yards - 84 rushing and 56 receiving - on just 21 touches.

The Falcons return seven offensive starters. They committed five turnovers last week to turn a close game into a blowout loss to Minnesota.

DEFENSE

Like the offense, the Falcons defense runs a varied attack. The Broncos have talked a lot about the movement of the defensive line, which could create problems for the offensive line identifying the right guys to block.

Defensive end Diyral Briggs already has five sacks and 14 tackles. The Falcons have seven sacks and 14 tackles for loss as a team.

However, Pittsburgh and Minnesota were able to move the ball, averaging 146.5 rushing yards and 248.5 passing yards per game.

"I think their defense is the scarier part of their team for us," Boise State tailback Ian Johnson said. "They like to move around a lot. These things are unorthodox for us to say the least."

SPECIAL TEAMS

Punter Nick Iovinelli has averaged 43.6 yards per punt, including a 79-yarder that was downed inside the 5-yard line. The Falcons also have an experienced kicker and will try some unconventional kicks - sky kicks and squibs - to keep returners off-balance.

They have not been productive in the return game, but they also have not allowed much. Kickoff returner Roger Williams is out this week with a broken finger.

The Falcons' biggest threat to the Broncos might be their aggressive punt-block unit, which features Briggs.
