- The Denver Nuggets try to snap a five-game slide when they
travel to Portland to take on the Trail Blazers at the Rose Garden.

Denver has dropped eight of its last nine games, most recently a 92-66
thrashing at the hands of the New Jersey Nets on Monday night. Vincent
Yarbrough was the Nuggets' only double-digit scorer with 13 points. Denver
shot just 38 percent from the field and turned the ball over a whopping 32
times -- a season high. The miscues led to 22 New Jersey points in a game that
was never close.

The Nuggets basically unraveled in the second quarter when they committed 15
turnovers and three quick technical fouls, two of which resulted in the
ejection of Juwan Howard.

"We were very sluggish and very sloppy," Denver coach Jeff Bzdelik said. "We
didn't move on offense, we missed a lot of layups, we were selfish and we let
our emotions get away from us. I'm extremely disappointed."

Denver is 3-19 and has a 7-20 mark within the Western Conference. The good
news for the Nuggets is that two of their conference wins this season are
against Portland.

Portland has won four straight overall and seven of its last nine games at the
Rose Garden. The Trail Blazers are coming off a 100-93 victory over the Dallas
Mavericks. Despite the absence of Rasheed Wallace, Portland won by pounding
the ball inside and getting to the foul line. The Trail Blazers scored 52
points in the paint and picked up another 22 from the charity stripe.

The Blazers limited Dallas to 13 third-quarter points and forced Dirk Nowitzki
to go nearly 20 minutes between baskets. Portland also forced the Mavericks
into making nine second-half turnovers.

"We stepped up our defense in the second half and that really got us going,"
said Bonzi Wells. "Dallas has the best team in the league right now, and we
had to adjust to them. We had to step up for the win."

Wells finished with 18 points and tied a career-high with 14 rebounds. Scottie
Pippen had 19 points, Derek Anderson added 17 and Ruben Patterson scored 12 in
the victory. With the win, the Trail Blazers improved to 4-1 during Wallace's
suspension, which has two games remaining.

Denver has beaten Portland twice already this season, posting victories both
at home and on the road. The Nuggets have lost seven straight road games
entering tonight's contest. Denver has also dropped 13 of its last 15 at
Portland.

The Trail Blazers lead the all-time series 68-47.

Raymond, when you get a second, please post some info on the Portland/Denver game. Looks like there's not much to go on. Perhaps what the player's are having for dinner and what time? They could cramp up or something. :D

Denver lets emotions dictate
Howard ousted after technicals
By Marc J. Spears
Denver Post Sports Writer

Tuesday, January 28, 2003 - Sixty-six total points. A season-high 30 turnovers. A franchise-low in shot attempts with 56 and a season-tying low of 21 field goals on 37.5 percent shooting. Twenty-six first-half points. And four technicals, including two that led to the ejection of leading scorer and rebounder Juwan Howard in the second quarter.

AP
Denver Nuggets forward Juwan Howard, right, works the ball inside against New Jersey Nets forward Kenyon Martin in the first quarter.

Priceless this was not as the Denver Nuggets probably played their worst game of the season during a 92-66 loss to the New Jersey Nets on Monday night at the Pepsi Center, which accounted for their fifth straight defeat.

"I'm mad and upset because this isn't what it has been," said Nuggets coach Jeff Bzdelik, who added there will be a team meeting before tonight's game at Portland. "We've been in games, and maybe we've got beaten because of the experience level and talent level. In my mind, it was not good."

By the numbers
Strong numbers: Nuggets rookie guard Vincent Yarbrough scored a team- high 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Nuggets guard Chris Whitney returned to the lineup after missing the previous 24 games because of an ankle injury. Nets star guard Jason Kidd was limited to one field goal in 27 minutes. Rocky, the Nuggets' mascot, made a half-court shot during a timeout.

Wrong numbers: For the Nuggets, too many to count.

Final thought: This performance by the Nuggets should be listed in the Webster's definition of "ugly."

Next: At Portland tonight.

The game started on a good note for Denver with point guard Chris Whitney back in the lineup. An MRI and CT scan gave him clearance to return after missing 24 games because of an ankle injury. Whitney scored five points on 2-of-7 shooting and had five assists in 20 minutes.

"I'm a little sore, but I was able to make it through," said Whitney, who did not start.

The Nuggets (10-34) finished the first quarter trailing by five. But soon after the second quarter began, the Nuggets' hopes of winning ended.

With 9:05 left in the second quarter and the Nets up 27-18, Nuggets forward Chris Andersen was called for a wild offensive charge. Andersen immediately was taken out of the game.

Five seconds later, Nuggets guard Rodney White stole the ball from Nets guard Richard Jefferson. White tried to be too fancy by bouncing the ball on the floor before trying to catch and dunk it, and Jefferson blocked his contest-like attempt.

Bzdelik didn't take White out until the 8:14 mark after getting word of what White had done. At the time of White's dunk attempt, Bzdelik's attention was on the other side of the court to check the defense.

"Had I known Rodney did that, I would have taken him out immediately," Bzdelik said.

With 6:50 left in the second quarter and New Jersey up 28-18, Harvey shoved Jefferson at half court. Harvey was given a technical by referee Ken Mauer. Harvey responded by walking toward Mauer and stating his case.

Howard, a team captain, moved Harvey out of the way to talk to Mauer and plead that he should also give Jefferson a technical. Instead, Mauer gave Howard a technical. An upset Howard had to be restrained from Mauer by coaches.

Mauer then gave Howard another technical, tossing him from the game. An even more agitated Howard began to approach Mauer again before being restrained again while heading to the locker room.

Howard's actions could be subject to a review by the NBA office, which would determine if a fine or suspension is merited.

Nets guard Jason Kidd then made three free throws off the technicals for a 31-18 lead. The Nuggets scored just eight points the rest of the half and never regained their composure.

"We get distracted from what we are supposed to do very easily," Bzdelik said. "Until we learn how to check our emotions, and we talk about it, this is the result."

Said Kidd: "This game was more or less practice."
