Yesterday, Atlanta scored 11 runs and hung on for the victory as Andruw Jones picked up where he left off last year.

Jones drove in four runs Monday at Dodger Stadium and he's sure to be licking his chops tonight in facing Brad Penny. Jones is 14-for-51 (.366) in his career against Penny, who has a 4.66 ERA in 16 career starts versus Atlanta. Chipper Jones (11-for-35) and Marcus Giles (5-for-17) have also enjoyed success against Penny.

L.A. and manager Grady Little were patting themselves on the back for making things close Monday. But that's hardly a consolation for a team who had two players it was counting on, Kenny Loften and Nomar Garciaparra , to be ready to go but aren't.

With Nomar sitting out Monday, the Dodgers were forced to use their best pinch hitter, Olmedo Saenz, in the starting line up at first base. He batted fifth in the lineup.

The Dodgers got to Tim Hudson yesterday, but tonight they'll face the Braves' top hurler in John Smoltz. He has a 2.77 ERA and 44 saves lifetime versus L.A., and that includes 33 starts. And this year he's developed a change up to go along with his nasty split-finger fastball and sinker.

Most of the Dodgers have struggled in their career versus Smoltz (Jeff Kent is 12-for-51 lifetime against the Atlanta right-hander) and their bats will be quiet tonight as Smoltz and Braves get the job done.

The Angels grabbed yesterday's opener and they
appear poised to start the season 2-0. They'll be
sending John Lackey to the hill, looking to follow
up on his big 2005 comeback (+$990, 3.45 ERA).
He should do well against the Mariners, who fared
poorly vs. righthanders last year (-$1275 with only
4.3 runs per game). Contrast that with Joel Pineiro
(-$560, 5.62 ERA) taking on an Angels' team that
posted a 70-42 mark vs. righties (+$1935) and you
find it hard to pass up a shot on the visitor at this
very short price.
