michigan state/illinois under 146

maybe im missing something, but i cant see this one being played in the 70s. i know michigan state has put up some big numbers their last 4 games (totals of 154,161,156, and 157) -- so perhaps that can at least explain the opening line -- but when it comes down to it, these are two of the best (and most physical) defensive teams in the big 10. and when they get together, it shows. the last handful of meetings in this series havent gone anywhere near this number. obviously personnel changes, but with this being a big game (even though neither team is in the top 25, which is strange for this series) i cant see anything but a bruising, grind-it-out game.

also something worth noting is michigan state with some big revenge for last seasons debacle in illinois. spartans got absolutely drilled (70-40).

last 10 meetings:

illinois 70-40 (110 pts)
msu 68-65 (133 pts)
illinois 63-61 (124 pts)
msu 67-61 (128 pts)
illinois 77-66 (143 pts)
msu 76-61 (137 pts)
msu 91-66 (157 pts)
msu 67-50 (117 pts)
msu 61-44 (105 pts)
msu 51-49 (100 pts)

again, maybe im getting sucked in. perhaps both teams will light it up and play a game in the high 70s. but i dont see it. izzo's style didnt all the sudden become run-n-gun in big games. i think this one lands around 138-139 or so.

Does seem a bit high doesn't it? I don't see the Spartans shooting 70% from the floor again like they did against the Bucks.

Solid looking play here. GL

Hey G: Miami opens as a 1 point chalk. I'll tell you what, I watched the first game and Miami just owned the boards vs. the Zips. The Redhawks scored so many second chance points that I lost count. Akron kept fighting back to get it within 3 or so, but just couldn't get over the hump. Also, Danny Horace is back for Miami, and as I recall he did not play in the first tilt. Funny thing is,that nearly everybody is out rebounding the Zips lately and rebounding was in the early going the strength of this team.

Hollingsworth did not play at all in the 2nd half vs.EMU so I will try to confirm his status for tomorrow a bit later. But with their miserable free throw shooting and lack of aggression on the glass, I could not back them with any confidence vs Miami.

Don't get me wrong, on paper the Zips do appear to be the play here, especially in the role of a short home dog. I certainly could not back the Redhawks, but I personally have lost all faith in the Zips to do anything but perpetually under achieve.

I have already pounded Toledo -12' vs NIU who will once again be without all MAC talent Smallwood(personal problems/ coaches descision) who's value easily excedes 10 points a game to the Huskies.

Good luck If you play the Zips I'll be there rooting for them. BTW, Kent State game is Sunday 2/29 2:00 pm. interested?

Let me know ,
Mark

While I thought the 145 was high, this Michigan State team is probably Izzo's worst defensive team. They were standing around daring Ohio State to take shots the other day. And being as bad as Ohio State is, they still put up 70. Offensively, Mich State will face 1000 times more pressure than what Ohio State did on Saturday.

But don't confuse this Michigan State team w/other Izzo teams. This team can't play D or rebound.

hope you don't get screwed by OT here

this is one of those in-conference tv games that I think will go down to the wire.

definitely. grab my email from jack (or i can ask him for yours)

also, keep me posted on hollingsworth. his game status and mental state seems to change every day of the year. i know he went through some tough teams in the off-season, but between injuries and personal issues, hes a guy akron sorely needs to play to his potential
