Ricknjax, I don't know the full story, I think our northern friends would probably be more helpful in the whole thing. As far as I know, "Habs" is short for "Les Habitants", which is the name given to the original settlers of New France, and eventually given to the Montreal Canadiens as a nickname.

Another theory I have is that the original members of the team were all lovers of the spicey Habanero sauce. J/K.

yep...ddubs you are correct:

So it seems a natural nickname for the Montreal Canadiens, established in 1909 as a French-Canadian hockey team appealing to the city's Francophone community."
