Nothing major - typical for this club. Still considering coming over to the Senators fan base. I guess I will have to ask HORNS. LOL

The Boston Bruins have signed defenseman Jonathan Girard to a one-year contract and have agreed to terms with left wing Michal Grosek on a one-year deal, it was announced today by Bruins General Manager Mike O?Connell. In keeping with club policy, terms of the contracts were not released. Girard, a restricted free agent, returned his qualifying offer and Grosek had become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.
?We look forward to having Jonathan and Michal back,? said O?Connell. ?Jonathan?s made huge progress and we expect him to have a more significant role with the team this season. Michal is a big, power forward who gives us some strength up the middle, as he can also play center. Both players expressed that they like Boston, and that they want to play here.?

O?Connell also announced that Group II (restricted) free agents Brian Rolston, Hal Gill and Bryan Berard have filed for salary arbitration in advance of tonight?s midnight deadline for players to file. Sergei Samsonov is the Bruins? other arbitration-eligible player, but he has not yet notified the team of his decision.

mugs,

The Sens fan base is growing!! Only guy left to sign is restricted free agent Marty Havlat. That deal will get done in the next few weeks. The new owner is already showing his commitment by giving Smolinski a 4 year deal and Reds a 3 year deal at almost 5 million a year. This never would have happened if Bryden was still owner. The Sens will let Arvedson walk as he is unrestricted and this guy plays the perimeter, something the Sens don't need. Don't know why the Leafs are looking at signing this guy, he disappears every playoffs. I will send you an e-mail soon. Back from Scotsdale for another month then down there permanently. Sens play at Phoenix on Jan. 29 in the new rink!

HORNS:D

I find it kinda ironic that the BoSox started the yr using similar strategy in their bullpen, "closer by committee", which failed miserably and now they finally have a legit closer in Kim. When are the B's gonna realize that Raycroft and Shields are just not gonna cut it. They need to go after Cujo, Dunham, or Burke. But I don't think they'll be willing to pay the 8 mil salary that Cujo has:(. Their offense will be great, with Samsonov coming back healthy, and their D couldn't possibly play any worse than last season. Get a clue, O'Connell, go and get a #1 goalie......NOW!:D

Kev! How're things going, bud?? Gotta be loving all that sunshine in Arizona, eh??:D. BTW, we would love to have Havlat playing for the Kings if the Sens don't want him, LOL:D. The Sens will be a force again next season, my only problem is giving Smokes a 4 yr deal. His skills are declining, and he'll kill you in the playoffs every year. Maybe a change of scenery will make him perform better, just like I'm hoping with Cechmanek:D. I hope we'll see more of Spezza this yr, too. He was great in the few games vs NJ. Take care!

B's signings...con't

The Boston Bruins have agreed to terms with defenseman Hal Gill on a one-year contract, it was announced today by Bruins General Manager Mike O?Connell. In keeping with club policy, terms of the contract were not released. The agreement comes in advance of a scheduled August 2 arbitration hearing, which is no longer necessary.
?Hal?s a terrific defenseman for us and a valuable member of our team,? said O?Connell. ?Preparing for an arbitration case often makes issues clearer for both parties, which was the case here, so I?m pleased that we were able to reach this agreement.?
Gill, 28, was Boston?s eighth pick, 207th overall, in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft. He turned pro with the Bruins in 1997 following a four-year college career at Providence College. The 6?7?, 250 lb. native of Concord MA played 76 games for the Bruins last season, scoring four goals and 13 assists for 17 points with 56 penalty minutes while leading the team with a +21 plus/minus rating. Gill has played 464 career NHL games, all with Boston, scoring 17 goals and 61 assists for 78 points and 365
penalty minutes.

Tough to say, mugsy, but it doesn't look good. The report says his hip was broken in 4 places, so most likely he'll have plates and screws put in to stabilize his hip bones in surgery. I'm not sure if he'll be able to play in the NHL again, with so much violent contact in the game. It sounds like a pretty horrific crash, so the rest of his vertebrae may be misaligned, and he'll likely be suffering low back pain for a long time on top of his hip problems. Don't know if he'll ever be the same player he was before the accident, but that's pure speculation on my part without much facts to base it on. I sincerely hope I'm wrong about that.

Any updates in the Boston papers regarding his status post-op??

Surgery on horizon for Girard

Defenseman stable after car accident

Bruins defenseman Jonathan Girard, who was seriously injured in an automobile accident Thursday outside his hometown of Rawdon, Quebec, will require surgery to repair his pelvis, which was broken in four places.

No date for the surgery has been set, and team officials said it was too early to tell if Girard would be able to play this season. The Bruins medical staff has not yet been able to examine Girard's X-rays, but was expected to see them on Monday.

''As to the outlook for his hockey career, that is to be determined and is not our concern at this time,'' Bruins general manager Mike O'Connell said in a statement. ''Our thoughts and prayers are with Jonathan for a complete recovery.''

Girard, 23, was the Bruins' second-round pick (No. 48 overall) in the 1998 draft. He played his first full NHL season last year, scoring six goals and collecting 16 assists in 73 games. He was re-signed to a one-year deal July 15.

''I have been in contact with Jonathan's agent [Bob Sauve] and my understanding is that Jonathan was driving when the car went off the road and the accident occurred,'' O'Connell said. ''He suffered a broken pelvis in four places and some blood loss. He is in stable condition and I understand that he is doing better. I have spoken with our athletic trainer, Don DelNegro, and our medical staff who will be contacting Jonathan's doctors in Montreal to discuss his condition and treatment.''
