Minnesota Twins (48-47) At Los Angeles Angels (55-38)

Date: Thursday July 23rd

Time: 10:05 PM ET

TV: Fox Sports West

Line: Angels -150 / Twins +140

Total: 8 ? Over -105 / Under -115

Twins Road Record: 20-27

Angels Home Record: 27-18

Twins Last 10: 5-5

Angels Last 10: 9-1

Pitchers:

Scott Baker (MN) 8-7 / 5.10 ERA / 90 K?s / 1.20 WHIP

Jered Weaver (LAA) 10-3 / 3.48 ERA / 107 K?s / 1.18 WHIP

The Twins (48-47) are slumping to start the second half of the season, and now they have to head to Anaheim to face the ?red-hot? Angels. The Halos have won nine of their last 10 games and lead second-place Texas by three games in the AL West.

The Los Angeles Angels haven?t missed a beat without Vladimir Guerrero and Torii Hunter. Players once at the bottom of the order or buried on the bench have filled the gaps left by their injured leaders, keeping the Angels atop the AL West.

No one has elevated his game more then Erick Aybar he is hitting .490 this month, including 24-for-43 the past 11 games, lifting his average to .315 for the season?53 points higher than his career average.

Angel?s first baseman Kendry Morales has extended his career-high hitting streak to 19 games with two hits in the opener of the twin bill on Tuesday. Morales is batting .375 (27 for 72) with 13 runs, five homers and 16 RBIs during his run.

The Angels 1-3 (Figgins, Itzturis, Abreu) in the batting order are hitting over .300, all have scored over 40 runs and move runners along. Abreu reached 20 stolen bases for the 11th straight season.

Minnesota?s All Star Catcher Joe Mauer has been slumping since the All Star Break. On Sunday in Texas, Mauer went 0 for 6 for the first time in his career, and in the Twins' final game before the all-star break, he struck out four times, also a career first. Through Sunday his .264 July batting average (53 at-bats) dropped his season average to .353. In the three games at Texas, Mauer went 1 for 13 with three strikeouts. His 10 strikeouts and seven walks in July make for a 0.70 walk-to-strikeout ratio, well below his career ratio of 1.21. If the Twins want to keep contending, they will need for their former AL MVP to break out of his slump.

Justin Morneau has been red- hot all year hitting .333 with 24 HR?s, 79 RBI?s. and a startling .400 (on base percentage). Morneau has had a great road trip with 3 HR?s and 11 RBI?s, and is quietly having a phenomenal season.

The Twinkies are experiencing a huge power surge this year with 98 bombs; Minnesota didn?t hit their 98th team home run until Sept. 1st during the 2008 campaign.

Joe Crede's strained AC joint in his right shoulder will keep him out of the starting lineup for a few games.

Jason Kubel is having a great year, hitting .316, with 16 HR?s, and 52 RBI?s. He is 1-5 in his career against Jered Weaver.

Jered Weaver has had great success against the Twins having never given up a homerun to the Twins. Jered Weaver lasted only 3 2/3 innings Saturday against the Oakland A's, his shortest outing of the season. He gave up eight hits and five earned runs. But he had a good excuse for the poor performance. After the first inning, Weaver became "nauseous and woozy" because of what manager Mike Scioscia called a "viral" problem. Weaver is 10-3 overall with a 3.48 ERA, but he has not been as sharp lately as he was earlier in the season. In his past six starts he is 3-1, but he has a 7.29 ERA during that stretch.

Scott Baker delivered a gem of an outing to open the second half. The right-hander held the Rangers to just one run on six hits over eight innings. He kept an aggressive-swinging Texas ball club off balance by throwing a lot of first-pitch strikes and moving the ball in and out of the strike zone. The Twins hope to see more of that from Baker throughout the second half. He'll next face the Angels, a team he's gone 0-4 against with a 5.88 ERA in six career starts. Baker has won four of his last five starts.

Betting Trends:

Twins are 5-2 in their last seven games against the Angels

Twins are 4-1 in Scott Baker?s last five starts

The UNDER is 4-1 in the Twins last five games

Angels are 26-9 in the Angels last 35 games

Angels are 9-2 in Jered Weaver?s last 11 starts

The OVER is 6-0 in Jered Weaver?s last six starts

The Minnesota Twins travel to their ?house of horrors? tonight when take on the L.A. Angels. The Twinkies are +140 dogs for this 10:05 pm ET game.

For some reason, Southern California has not been kind to this scrappy Minnesota team over the years. In fact, they?ree just 8-20 there since the 2002 playoffs and it breaks down as follows.

2008: (2-2)
2007: (1-5)
2006: (1-2)
2005: (1-2)
2004: (1-2)
2003: (2-4)
2002: (0-3) Postseason

Total (8-20)

Winning this series isn?t going to be easy this time either. The Twins (48-47) are in the midst of a brutal nine-game road trip to open the second half and they?ve gone 3-3 versus the Athletics and Rangers so far.

Their last game was a Wednesday afternoon tilt where they got absolutely destroyed, 16-1 by Oakland.

Los Angeles (55-38) has been more successful in their six-game road odyssey since the break. They took three of four at Oakland and then swept a three-game set at Kansas City after a 9-6 win on Wednesday night.

The Angels will be a little tired after traveling back for this game but they take solace in knowing they?re 12-1 in their last 13 opening games of a series. That is a very interesting statistic.

Los Angeles has also continued to hit well even with Vladimir Guerrero and Torii Hunter on the disabled list. They have averaged a whopping seven runs in the 11 games they?ve been out, compared to 5.4 for the season.

Jered Weaver (10-3, 3.48 ERA) vs. Scott Baker (8-7, 5.10 ERA)

Weaver is the team ace but he?s been scuffling of late with a 7.36 July ERA. The good news is the team has been rallying behind him, averaging over 10 runs in his last five outings to allow him to pile up wins.

For the season, Weaver has been much more effective at home (7-1, 2.25 ERA) than on the road (3-2, 5.19 ERA).

Minnesota?s Baker has gone 4-1 in his last five starts even though his ERA in that span is 4.76. Bettors should note he?s pitched better on the road of late with a 2.65 ERA in his last five contests.

He?ll need to be on his game against this potent Angels lineup that is making no excuses for injury.

The Los Angeles Angels may have a number of regulars out, but their offense continues to shine.

The Angels will try to extend their winning streak to six games Thursday night in the opener of a four-game home set against the Minnesota Twins, who have given up a boatload of runs lately.

Los Angeles (55-38) has shown no signs of slowing down despite playing without Vladimir Guerrero, Torii Hunter and Juan Rivera. Guerrero (strained knee) and Hunter (strained adductor) are on the disabled list, while Rivera has missed the last four games with a tight right hamstring.

The Angels have scored 39 runs during their five-game streak, including 27 in a three-game sweep at Kansas City. Maicer Izturis drove in four runs and Chone Figgins had four hits Wednesday as Los Angeles scored five times in the eighth inning for a 9-6 win - its major league-leading 30th come-from-behind victory.

"This a team that never looks at the scoreboard, we never let our guard down," Izturis said through an interpreter. "Regardless of what happened early in the game, we don't try to get out of our game."

First baseman Kendry Morales had two hits to extend his career-best hitting streak to 20 games. Morales is batting .377 (29 for 77) with 14 runs, five homers and 16 RBIs during his run.

The Twins (48-47) will be looking for a big effort from starter Scott Baker (8-7, 5.10 ERA) on Thursday after their pitching was battered in a three-game series at Oakland. Minnesota gave up 32 runs and 44 hits in losing two of three, including a 16-1 loss Wednesday in which its bullpen was forced to log seven innings.

"We just got murdered," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "It wasn't much fun. Matter of fact, it was no fun. There was not really any fun."

Gardenhire also got bad news on third baseman Joe Crede, who was scratched after a setback with his bothersome right shoulder. Crede re-aggravated the injury Tuesday and will see a specialist Thursday.

Brendan Harris has started three of the last four games at third with Crede out. Harris was a major factor when the Twins swept three at home from the Angels from April 17-19, going 5 for 13 (.385) with a homer and four runs scored.

Baker, meanwhile, looks to continue his resurgence and win a third straight start. He is 6-1 with a 3.97 ERA in his last nine outings after going 2-6 with a 6.32 ERA in his first nine.

The right-hander was very sharp Saturday at Texas, yielding one run over eight innings in a 4-1 victory. He retired his final nine hitters.

"I want to have a big impact on this team in the second half," Baker said. "It'll definitely start with pitching."

Baker, though, has never made much of an impact against the Angels. He is 0-4 with a 5.88 ERA against them, lasting past the sixth inning just once.

The Angels' Jered Weaver (10-3, 3.48) had a poor outing Saturday partly because he fell ill during the first inning. He lasted 3 2-3 innings - his shortest outing since July 22, 2008 - and gave up five runs in an 11-6 victory at Oakland.

"I just felt nauseous and woozy," Weaver said.

Weaver had been 7-1 with a 3.76 ERA in his previous 10 starts.

The right-hander is 2-1 with a 2.60 ERA in four career starts versus Minnesota. Twins All-Star Justin Morneau is 2 for 11 (.182) with four strikeouts against Weaver, while right fielder Michael Cuddyer is 1 for 9 (.111).

Probable Starting Pitchers: Minnesota - Scott Baker (8-7, 5.10) LA Angels - Jered Weaver (10-3, 3.48)

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim shoot for their sixth straight win this evening when they open a four-game series with the Minnesota Twins at Angel Stadium.

The Angels have not skipped a beat with outfielders Vladimir Guerrero and Torii Hunter on the disabled list, as Los Angeles enters tonight's tilt with a three-game lead on the Texas Rangers in the AL West.

Anaheim comes in following a three-game sweep of the lowly Kansas City Royals that culminated with a 9-6 win on Thursday. Chone Figgins had four hits, including the go-ahead two-run double during a five-run uprising in the eighth inning to lead the way.

Maicer Izturis added a two-run homer and totaled four RBI for the Halos, who have won nine of their last 10 games. Kendry Morales added a pair of hits, extending his hitting streak to a career-best 20 games.

Joe Saunders was charged with nine hits and six runs over 5 2/3 innings in the start for the Angels. Justin Speier (4-2) tossed 1 1/3 innings to get the win, and Brian Fuentes continued his impressive pitching with a hitless ninth for his major league-leading 30th save.

"I think our pitching is hanging in there even though we may give up a couple runs," said Figgins. "They're keeping us in the ball game. When we get a runner on, I think we capitalize on it."

Hoping to keep the Angels in the win column this evening will be right-hander Jered Weaver, who is 10-3 with a 3.48 ERA. Weaver is unbeaten in his last five starts (3-0), but was roughed up a bit in his last trip to the hill on Saturday in Oakland, as the Athletics hit him for five runs and eight hits in 3 2/3 innings.

Weaver has faced the Twins four times and is 2-1 in those outings with a 2.60 ERA.

Minnesota, meanwhile, will counter with righty Scott Baker, who has won six of his last seven decisions. Baker's latest win came on Saturday in Texas, as he held the Rangers to a run and six hits in eight innings, while striking out eight to improve to 8-7 to go along with a 5.10 ERA.

Baker, though, is 0-4 lifetime against the Angels with a 5.88 ERA in six starts.

Minnesota enters this series on a sour note after dropping two of three to the A's, including a miserable 16-1 drubbing in Thursday's rubber match. Justin Morneau homered for the Twins, who have dropped three of four and surrendered their most runs in a game this year.

"We just got murdered," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "It wasn't much fun. Matter of fact, it was no fun. There was not really any fun."

Glen Perkins (5-6) recorded just three outs in his start, charged with six hits and eight runs over one-plus innings.

Minnesota will likely be without third baseman Joe Crede, who is expected to see a specialist on Thursday for his right shoulder.

The Twins swept a three-game set from the Angels back in April and has won five of the last seven matchups in the series.
