U.S. ex-general calls for Iraq pull out

WASHINGTON, Dec. 1 (UPI) -- The U.S. general who used to head the National Security Agency says the only way to stabilize the Middle East is to leave Iraq.

Retired three star Lt. Gen. William Odom, writing for NiemanWatchdog.org, wrote that while President George W. Bush wants to bring democracy and stability to the Middle East, the only way to achieve that goal is for the U.S. armed forces to get out of Iraq now.

Odom, one of the most respected U.S. military analysts and a prominent figure at the conservative Hudson Institute in Washington, wrote, "We have seen most of our allies stand aside and engage in Schadenfreude over our painful bog-down in Iraq. Winston Churchill's glib observation, 'the only thing worse that having allies is having none,' was once again vindicated.

"There is no chance that our allies will join us in Iraq," he wrote. "... Iraq is the worst place to fight a battle for regional stability. Whose interests were best served by the U.S. invasion of Iraq in the first place? It turns out that Iran and al-Qaida benefited the most, and that continues to be true every day U.S. forces remain there."

That's exactly right. That's what puzzling about how some people continue to convince themselves that this somehow had benefited us in any way. National security be damned, we blew some shit up! Terrorists? No, our number one priority is fighting some former councilmen under Saddam who make roadside bombs! Those are the people who are and were a grave immediate threat to the motherland!

We toppled a third world army in less time than Janet Reno got control of the wackos in Waco!

We got Saddam, who was in charge of this third world military. By God, he might have invaded the US at any moment he was such a bad ass.

Hey, if we waited any longer he just might have given his bitter fundamentalist enemies WMD that he didn't have!

Let's stay the course here. Things are going fine. Just ask the Iraqi press that we've given 100 million dollars to in exchange for writing favorable stories. Man, that free press concept can be expensive.

Guys it looks like we are going to have to wait till the next election!!! This guy wouldn't pull out if Iraq was a woman with HIV... This is a texas shut em up guy with a sub par IQ.

The only way Bush would pull out is if the entire public started freaking out causing mass picketing and crazy homeland stress. Not enough people seem to be truly concerned with the matter, and instead are concerned with their families, rightly so.

Unless either some heavy stuff leaks out about why we are really still there comes to light, or we see something happen like the public start rioting and really showing a BIG TIME interest in what's going on or we are stuck till Bush leaves....

Being a miliary brat I know a thing or two about how these things work....Bush is 100% military minded, and something to think about that is kind of interesting....What will bush contribute if he gets us out of the war, this guy won't have a job/he won't have anything to do....In my eyes we're stuck

"That's exactly right."

Your opinion on how al-Qaida benefited,Matt.

"10 Marines killed by a roadside bomb yesterday. Why?"
Let me take a wild stab--
A: we are in a war in Iraq
B: deaths occur in war?

Us going there was a great recruiting tool. Also, as even you mentioned a few days ago, Al-Zarqawi has risen to prominence as a result of us going into Iraq. Al-Sadr is lying low as he realizes that his sect (Fundamentalist Shia) will soon run the country. Al-Sistani is patiently biding his time.

These are the people who are closely aligned with Iran and with Al-Qaeda.

Whether you want to admit it or not, there will soon be another terrorist-friendly, radical regime set up in the ME. They can thank us for that. I would call that a huge victory for Al-Qaeda. Having us boot out a secular regime and deliver the country to fanatics like them.

They are probably laughing their ass off just sitting back, watching us battle the Sunni insurgents, knowing that they will be running things soon and REALLY doing their thing once we leave.

If you think this will play out any differently, i'd love to hear your prediction.

Al-zarqawi rising to prominence? is that why his own family disowned him???

Specific about war? Or the lack of planning for it?

Yeah, his family disowned him. WTF does that have to do with anything? I was quoting Dogs That Bark anyways, although I agree with him.

You don't think he's risen to prominence by becoming the lead Al-Qaeda operative in Iraq?

As far as the rest, we'll see. But do a search of my(and many others) posts in January, February and March of 2003 and see how those predictions turned out.

If you don't think the Shiias are holding back right now, simply waiting for the country that we will deliver to them on 12/31 when the new government will take office, then you're an idiot.

Dear War Strategist,
do you think that Al Qaeda was in Iraq before September 11, 2001?

Who said all of our troops are leaving by the end of the year?

2003 posts. Very funny. Where are ANY of your posts from 2003?? :mj07:
