My wife just got back from doctor and she has severe ulcers. She is put on what is called a "GI cocktail" and she has to do the liquid protein diet for a couple weeks as solid food does' nt allow the healing process to occur as fast.
Just wondering if anyone here has experienced severe ulcers............and had any advice on the subject.
the "cocktail" includes antibiotics which go after the bacteria H. Pylori, which interestingly enough, was only discovered a couple decades ago and was the reason for this year's Nobel prize in medicine
also included are meds that will decrease the acid production of the stomach. The stomach has a natrual barrier of mucus which protects it from digesting itself...when this breaks down, you get exactly that and an ulcer develops
to properly diagnose this disease, one needs an endoscopy...and the report that follows would tell you if indeed you have a definite diagnosis of this bug -- which is what she is getting treated for
there are other kinds of ulcers related to stress, alcohol, caffeine, and meds such as aspirin and other pain relievers which are also quite common...
there are also a couple other things which can cause ulcers such as tumors or vascular disease but these are quite rare
if i were you, i would make sure i have a definitive diagnosis of "ulcer" and also "H. Pylori" before proceeding with a treatment plan
all too often, primary doctors do not work these up for a while, throwing med's at the problem without knowing what they are shooting at
the patient as a result sits there and doesn't get well for a while
i would get a consult with a Gastroenterologist if you haven't already -- and get an endoscopy
