Tar Heels YTD: 12-7 +7.22 u

This is a very difficult game to cap IMO. The Tar Heels travel to College Park to try to avenge the 40 point beating last year they took at Maryland. I think this revenge factor is pretty big, I've read 2 articles already about that loss and how the players have been looking forward to this one. The loss of Jawad Williams is what really throws a wrench into everything. Without him, the Heels lose their 2nd rebounder and 3rd best scorer, and an outside threat and a body off the bench. With that said, it might not matter as much as some people think. Last year, Raymond Felton was a big scoring threat because he had to be. This year, however, Roy wanted him to concentrate on dishing the ball off. Recently, though, Roy told Ray that he was passing too much and needed to score more. The result...25 pts against GT last time out. Sean May is averaging 25 pts in his last 2 games. Jackie Manuel has been in double digits the last several game. I guess in all of this babble I'm trying to say that the Heels are alright without Jawad in there.

I just don't see that much for Maryland. Yes, I think they are a talented team. But they are young. And incosistent. Which is why they beat Florida on the road, but then lose to more inferior teams. So what do I think that Md has in their favor? Home court advantage. The Terps IMO have one of the stronger home court advantages in college basketball. It's just a tough place to play for visiting teams. I just don't think Maryland is going to have an answer for Sean May tonight inside.

I will also say this, about this game and about my picks in general. I try my best not to be a homer on my picks, because if I am it basically takes a lot of the credibility out of my picks (and the effectiveness). This year, I have indeed made plays against the heels, which have won. When I do think that part of my capping for a game includes a bit of "homerness", then I will say it. I think it makes my picks more valid to people on here that might think it's purely due to my allegiences. I'm not someone who blows smoke, I know that Carolina will lose it's fair share of games.

I just wanted to put this little sidenote in, because I think a small part of my pick tonight is due to my love for Carolina. I can honestly see this game going both ways. I see reasons to play Maryland, but I see more reasons to play the Heels. Like I said, Maryland just hasn't proven itself to me yet. Even without Jawad, the heels are hitting full stride as Raymond and Sean have been on fire. Throw in the fact that tonight is a big revenge game for these players, I think my play will be on the Heels.

Play:

UNC +2 2 units

Good luck fellas :D

If I ever play against the Heels it is usually a when a team is an underdog. That way, the heels can win outright and make me happy, while the dog can still cover the spread. (diluted thinking, I know ;) )

Saint,
Are 2 units an average play for you, or where does this fit in on your system. Guess what Im asking not very well, how would you rate this play:cool:
Thanks and great insight into your team

Most of my plays average 1-2 units, so plays in that range are not anything I'm hitting especially hard. The biggest plays I've had this year are 6 units, and that is as high as I'll probably go. Anything that's 3-4 units and higher is a bigger size play that i like more than an average pick.

Something to look for tonight is the depth factor. MD wears teams out on defense and this years unit is one of their best defensively. Carolina will have to use some of their bench which will give them problems.

The real key is May, if he gets in foul trouble, Carolina is in trouble. Williams has fouls to use on the bench and will use that to their advantage.

I think UNC has more talent, but I think MD wins this game. They have had significant preparation time and they have owned UNC over the last few years. Gary will have them ready tonight, at home and on national tv.

I see a very up-tempo game with alot of fouls called. MD wins by 12.

Good Luck!

Depth or no depth, MD goes through droughts of scoring because they have no go to guy, something that UNC has. Caner-medly, gilchrest, and smith are their top scorers but they aren't consistent enough. MD beat Wisco at home this year but that game came down to the wire because the terps couldn't score and the badgers were missing a lot of open shots. If Md goes tonight it will be because their offense will not be able to keep up w/the firepower of the heels

First off, our bench is deeper than people think. With Jawad out, yes that hurts it a bit, but we still are strong with Manuel, Bohlander and Terry off the bench.

And about teams "tiring us out". Don't take this as rude, but it's not going to happen. PERIOD. Trust me, I know this team inside and out, and I can admit weaknesses. Opponents tiring us out is not one of them. Did you see the wake game...triple OTs. Did you see our starters out there? Yes. The practices these guys have to endure are to prepare them for running the whole game. That is what we do, and that is what our physical conditioning is. No team can ever run more than us, and run us into the ground. I just see people post that so-and-so is gonna try and tire us but that's completely wrong to use in capping.

And as far as the layoff for MD, I think it hurts them. Yes, it gives them time to "scout". But this is college bball, not football. An extra week isn't that big of a deal. But not playing in such a long time is. Teams get off, especially in bball.

Saint, great write-up, and right on the money. Maryland could definitely win this game. But it would take a sub-par performance from the Heels in my opinion. If anything, last year's debacle will insure Carolina comes ready to play. It actually encourages me to see a lot of cappers on Maryland, because they are banking on a trend, not because they think Maryland has the better team. The general public also doesn't realize Maryland is down this year, mostly because of inexperience (not talent, this team will be a national title contender in 1 or two years). Also, I think this line came out with Maryland as a favorite to encourage people to bet on Maryland, as their misconceptions will be enforced. I think a lot of the public will see that Maryland won by 40 last year and see them as only a two point favorite and grab it, especially people who dislike UNC. All this failing to take into account just how much of a loss Sean May was (especially against a team like Maryland) and how much of a detrminent Doherty was. Say what you want about him, but his team hated playing for him. Again, I could easily be wrong about this. I thought Wake would cover the spread last night and even win it outright, but I was way off. But I'll take a team like the Heels everytime... the ACC is my best conference and I have to play the best values. Saint, I take your impartiality when capping to heart, I am just as capable of betting against Duke as I am for them, and have done so in my short time on this board. I am a Dukie, and I still like your Heels tonight!

i will either bet unc or lay off game.i think may can get very tired when he has to play both ends of the floor. uconn with big front line may wear him down.felton-no he gets stronger.i like unc vs duke becuse coach k will challenge felton and he thrives on that.he will break down duhon and dockery.early play for sat-take wake vs duke.eric williams will have monster game and wake may win straight up.i am leaning to under tonight.think gary switches to zone becuse of matchup problems.

Lowell-

Although I'm not playing it, the under is my lean as well. I read that even though Gary likes his team to run, he said he wants them to try and slow it down. Also, they feel in their half-court set, they aren't using enough of the shot clock. Edited at 9:05 to add 2 units to the ML +121, since Jawad is playing.

We disagree on just about everything tonight, but that is why they play the game.

Also. look for MD perimiter defense to give the heels fits. MD's size will give UNC problems, especially since they already are a poor outside shooting team, especially without Williams.

I am off to College Park to get a buzz on before the game.

Enjoy watching the game and good luck!

Sorry guys, this one isn't happening. Some shady officiating down the stretch, but we lost this one ourselves with our own play.

Normally, Sun Tzu, I'd tell you to go fucck yourself. Since you seem to be a lurker, I won't waste my time. I read your last 10 posts...and no picks. You must be pissed that you played my pick since you can't pick your own games. You can take shots at me all night.

Anyways, there is one very significant weakness on this UNC team. When it comes down to crunch time, no one on the roster knows how to win in the clutch. They are all so used to losing, not 1 of them knows what to do when the pressure is on. That is something that will always hold this team back.
