beachbum,
I'm a part of the PACE union...Paper Allied-industrial Chemical
Energy workers. I work in an oil refinery in Ohio. Used to be called Standard Oil till the Brits took them over (BP) during the Alaskan Pipeline build. They later sold to PREMCOR a sub of the notorius BLACKSTONE GROUP.

Good for all of you. Many here think union stinks. There wrong and we have good reasons why union were needed. Im alot older then many here and worked on both sides of union and company. My Grandfather and Dad both were union men and dam proud of it.

djv,
You got that right. The oil companies have been screwing the public over for decades, I can imagine how they'd screw us over if we didn't have a union. Those guys have one hell of a racket going, not only on a national scale, but of course internationally as well. You wouldn't believe some of the crap I've seen those bastards pull over my 28 plus years in the industry.

To each his own Hellah....I know those union boys at the BP Toledo refinery make damned good money though. Were you around that area when they used to be Standard Oil?

My father worked at BP Oil Refinery for 20 years(back when it was Sohio and all that)...he retired back in 2000 after basically killing his back...and he moved back to overseas. It was definatly a great paying job and he got a shitload of overtime....but I felt bad as his back always killed him. He worked at Davis-Besse before BP

I applied for BP last year...they hire like once every 10 years....I got to the 3rd interview and that was it. I guess they wanted ppl that are married and have higher responsibilites in life(something like that) - my friend however got hired in as a safety inspector. He`s making like $24 an hour...Im jealous :(

"No muff too tough---we dive at five"

Seriously been on both side of fence at Chrsler Corp years ago--

My opinion some things good and some bad. Most definately needed years ago--however have gooten too strong in some respects last decade. I think time is approaching when union officials will have to be less aggresive. My reasoning is,if push comes to shove, the worker and union rep are dependent on company but company can find labor anywhere.
Workers in sanitation in NY make more than school teacher in NY?

Most remarkable occurance I have ever seen was when Chrysler Corp was in trouble many years ago. I was union at that time and everyone decided before he arrived we would take no cuts.
To make long story short Iaccoca "asked" that we take cuts and management would take equal cut beginning with him as he reduced his compensation to $1 a year till Crysler got out of red.
He promised to return all wages back to norm when Chrysler was profitable again. Gov helped bail us out and resuts we we got back on our feet. Wages were increased back to level and we did something that had never been done prior(and maybe not since)
We paid gov bail out loan back in its entirety EARLY!

Iaccoca speech when asking us to take cut was most inspiring speech I have ever witnessed.
