Hoosier country
COLUMBIA, Mo. ? The University of Missouri system's president, Tim Wolfe, resigned Monday morning in the face of a walkout by faculty and a strike by football players who said he had done too little to combat racism on campus.

Wolfe made the stunning announcement at the start of a special Board of Curators meeting Monday morning to address the growing crisis at the Show Me state's flagship university. The board voted in favor of accepting his resignation.

?I am resigning as president of the University Missouri system,? said Wolfe, who choked up as he announced he was stepping down. ?My motivation in making this decision comes from a love of Columbia where I grew up and the state of Missouri. I thought and prayed over this decision. It is the right thing to do ? The frustration and anger I see is real and I don?t doubt it for a second.?

The situation had become so emotional that many members of the football team had even announced they would boycott team activities.

Before Wolfe's resignation, the faculty group issued a statement announcing plans for a walkout.

?I take full responsibility for what has occurred," Wolfe said.

Students complaining about a racially-fraught campus environment began protests at the university on Sept. 24, but the tense situation on campus had only recently begun to gain national attention.

More than 30 members of Missouri's football team announced Saturday that they would no longer take part in football-related activities while Wolfe was in power. Missouri football coach Gary Pinkel canceled practiced on Sunday and wrote on Twitter that he backed their efforts to force change at the school.

The football players joined the protest after graduate student Jonathan Butler began a hunger strike one week ago. Butler said the strike would either end with Wolfe leaving his post or Butler dying.

After Wolfe's announcement, Butler took to Twitter to announce that his hunger strike was over.

"This is only the first step! More change is to come!!" Butler posted on his Twitter account.

On Monday, before Wolfe announced his resignation, the undergraduate student government called for Wolfe's ouster.

"As the Executive Cabinet of the undergraduate student government, representing the 27,000 undergraduates at the University of Missouri's flagship institution, we formally demand the immediate removal of the UM System President Tim Wolfe," the student association wrote in a letter to the Board of Curators, which oversees the University of Missouri's four statewide campuses.

The Concerned Faculty group said late Sunday night that faculty members would stage a "teach in" at Carnahan Quadrangle, the epicenter of a protests.

Students pointed to several recent events on campus that underscore a hostile environment for black students.

Student government president Payton Head, who is black, said in September that people in a passing pickup truck shouted racial slurs at him. In early October, members of a black student organization said slurs were hurled at them by an apparently drunken white student. In addition, a swastika drawn in feces was found recently in a dormitory bathroom.

Many of the protests have been led by an organization called Concerned Student 1950, which gets its name from the year the university accepted its first black student.

?Tim Wolfe?s resignation was a necessary step toward healing and reconciliation on the University of Missouri campus, and I appreciate his decision to do so,? Gov.Jay Nixon said in a statement. ?There is more work to do, and now the University of Missouri must move forward ? united by a commitment to excellence, and respect and tolerance for all.

The movement comes more than a year after a white police officer in Ferguson, Mo., shot and killed Michael Brown, an unarmed black teenager, spurring a national protest. The St. Louis suburb is about 120 miles from the Columbia campus.

In their letter on Monday, student government leaders pointed to the university officials "silence" in the aftermath of Ferguson as exacerbating tensions on campus.

"In August 2014, the University of Missouri met the shooting of Michael Brown with silence," the student government leaders said in their letter. "In the following months, our students were left stranded, forced to face an increase in tension and inequality with no systemic support. Over the last 16 months, the quality of life for our students has only worsened."

Wolfe, who earned his bachelors degree from the university's flagship campus and spent most of his childhood in Columbia, said he was crestfallen by what had transpired. He pinned the blame squarely on himself for letting the situation on campus to get out of hand, while acknowledging a break-down in communication with students on campus.

"Why did we get to this very difficult situation? " Wolfe said. "It is my belief we stopped listening to each other."

Maybe I'm wrong and people can enlighten me but what should the school president have done in response to the Brown shooting? How did his silence exacerbate the problem? I understand and know there is racism everywhere but some redneck idiot yelling racial slurs doesn't make the school have a problem. How does a school with only 7% blacks elect a black student president if it's a racist school.

Again, I'm not saying there wasn't a problem but to cost a man his job because of something that occurred in another town and because of some dumb ass things that a small group of people did is a little over board to me.

And for anyone thinking I don't like black people or am not connected enough then you don't know me well. I'm the only white guy on a basketball team of 8. One of my closest friends and someone I hang out with at least 5 days a week is black. The other closest friend these days is Hispanic. I have no racism in me and never have. I'm not excusing what people have done but would like to know more about this.

funny

funny

while in the Air Force in 1986 I tried out for the Alaskan military team up in Shemya Alaska. I have been in sports my whole life, through high school, college and rookie ball baseball and felt very comfortable in my own skin and my own talents to be able to compete at any level. I will never forget that when I walked into the gym for 1st day of tryouts, I was the only white guy there besides an assistant coach! lol
I had thoughts I may not make the team because of being singled out, but being a 60% three point shooter helped me make the team. I did not start but they did play me for what I thought was fair. The one thing I never understood and I also saw this while playing baseball also at a junior college in 1980 at Iowa Central CC,in which the football team was the #1 in the nation, was when I showered, there would be a few African American guys who would wait until I was out of the shower before they showered. Same thing in Alaska, a few guys would wait for me to get out of the shower before they entered. I never asked any of my black friends, of whom I have many to this day, always wondering if that was respect they were taught growing up maybe in the south, or something to do way back in the slave days and was a generation thing. I by no means ever thought or acted like I was better than anyone else and they didn't have to do that for me, but I respected them as friends and teammates and never asked them why!

sigh* more about blacks against whites

they should have thier scholarships revoked

but really it will never end Blackie wins all the time

I don't get it. You don't even understand the situation. It's not blacks against whites, in fact there were several "whites" on the "black side, I'd use non-racist v. racist. I'm not saying the President is racist but his failure to act on several issues on Campus made minority students not feel protected by the University.

Such blatant racism should result in an immediate ban, time for another ghost scrapman.

If that were the case there are numerous madjackers that would have been banned years ago. It doesn't matter anyway if they get banned, they make up another username and come right back, banning does nothing. Look at how many usernames Pro190 has used.

The ignorance of some should never dictate how and what is right. Look, I agree scrapman could get another ghost or come back, but his schtick of scrapman would be put to rest. I don't know but it seems like using the term "blackie" shows such disrespect and is not even close to anything this site stands for I would be looking to distance myself any possible way I could... It's not even an opinion its simply derogatory.

I digress.

I've never said anything because it doesn't bother me a ton because I'm comfortable in who I am but I think of you the same way as I think of most of the guys you're talking about banning. Your anti Christianity rant is about as low class as anyone else on here with their racial slurs. It's the reason i don't frequent the MMA forum anymore. Just some food for thought.

Please don't think I was grouping you in with Scrapman. While I disagree with your opinion and think you are severely misinformed about what was happening on the CAMPUS itself you are entitled to your opinion.

so i'm considered racist for commenting about the blacks crying whitey is racist against them again????

:142smilie

Maybe if you had deal with them daily like i do you might see it differntly.

I shudder every time making deliveries in thier area even early before the late night ones i have to drive around making sure the streets are clear if i suspect possible set up i call customer to come out then quickly drive to thier door and make delivery in 5 secs.

Every week i read or hear of some delivery guy or gal being held up for a few bucks.

EVERY week it happens sometimes tragic endings occur.

But i guess saying that blacks are always crying racism agianst whitey makes me a racist in your eyes the so be it.

:0003

Wrote a response then realized I wont change your mind nor do I really care to try. Stay safe making those deliveries.

I forgot to mention Kick, a good number of my friends are atheist. I have no problem with what they believe. I do have a problem when people bash Christians for what they believe.

It sounds like your friendship circle could be the Canadian Parliament as diverse as it is.

Hedman, I never thought anyone was grouping me in with him. I also said I don't fully understand what all is going on there. I read what all news I could find and just don't think it's the reason someone should lose their job.

They are indeed. I hang out with people I've known from high school, thru sports I've played and now my kids sports. I'm about as diverse as I can get. My best friend is an atheist. Our favorite thing to do when all else fails is argue about creation vs. evolution. I don't love him any less as a friend because although he doesn't agree with me he doesn't put me down because of it.

An atheist who constantly bashes Christians and says every demeaning thing he can about them is the same as a racist IMO.

Yep, that's me, bashing Christians, you nailed it. My posts are just covered with hatred towards those nasty Christians. I need to be banned, I have been exposed, surprised I have lasted this long on this site. I am just constantly bashing Christians and I need to be stopped. I am clearly on par with the racists of Madjacks and I should be held accountable for numerous hatred spewing anti Christian posts. I went back through my thousands of posts and man oh man that is all I do, I bash and I bash those Christians, I am ashamed. I am clearly in need of help and I thank layinwood for opening my eyes, I am a closed minded uneducated individual that clearly needs to re-evaluate my stance on life. I have realized I am a terrible human being and will now start a support club with hedgehog, pro190, dr freeze, Raymond, scrapman and the other racists of Madjacks. I have seen the light.

I apologize and ask God/Muhammad/Jesus/Buddha for forgiveness.

I think your rehabilitation may have got off on the wrong foot.

:0002:0002:0002

You may have a point.

By the way I agree with layinwood, not sure he should have lost his job, but I guess when you are at the top you need to "take the bullet" and move on.
