Chris Jones has a broken foot and is out indefinitely. Check back. I will update the blog.
Jones broke his foot during UNT?s loss to Western Kentucky and sat out UNT?s game against Middle Tennessee.
The problem is that Jones has past the number of games he could have played and still been eligible for a medical redshirt.
Jones really was playing pretty well. He was tied for first in the Sun Belt Conference in assists per game and was also averaging 10.2 points a game.
UNT will now have to turn to Alzee Williams and P.J. Hardwick to run the show for UNT. Williams played the point last year after Jones was unable to play the second semester and did a pretty good job. He will again.
UNT just isn?t as good in transition with Alzee running the point. One of the strengths UNT had was having Jones running the floor with Alzee and Jordan Williams running the wings. That gave UNT three guys on the break who could finish at the rim and shoot the ball.
Hardwick was a highly regarded recruit coming in and is a good ball-handler. What he isn?t is a guy who is going to finish at the rim like Jones did.
Tony Benford said that Tony Mitchell is now UNT?s third-best ball-handler. We could see Mitchell bringing the ball up the floor now.
UNT is also going to be hurting from a depth perspective now. UNT was already without Brandan Walton, its best shooter.
Alzee Williams and Jordan Williams could end up playing 30 minutes or more a game now. Clarke Overlander and Hardwick, two guys who were barely playing will also be in key roles now.
It?s just another tough turn of events for UNT in a year nothing seems to be going right.
