Hudson Valley area.....NY
Not sure if anyone is watching PBS's 10 part series "Carrier".It is outstanding. It's not just a documentary about an aircraft carrier but about the lives of the people on board. It is so intresting. It's about family,faith,patriotsim..etc. The personnal problems that occur serving on board.I have two students that were aboard the Nimitz when they filmed this a few years ago.I haven't seen them yet so maybe they were edited out.The director Maro Carmayeff has done a great job putting this together.
It's filmed in high defination...was wondering if anyone has watched it and what you think.

I grew up on an army base in Italy for 10 years. It was Camp Darby and Livorno was the 3rd largest seaport for the US 6th fleet.Whenever the aircraft carriers came to port they would wipe out our Army base. The PX on base would be empty when the fleet left.Growing up we were always told when the 6th fleet was coming in so we could go shopping.I always remember all the sports game going on. Navy would have 3 or 4 fast pitch softball teams playing the army.Basketball games going on all day.Camp Darby special services would have so many tournaments set up,boxing, dart throwing, horseshoes, etc.
I have such good memories of all those contests...but my greatest memory were all the class trips we got to go on visiting the aircraft carriers.I was on the USS Forestal,Independence,Essex and Intrepid. We looked so foward to these trips..also I had one of my teachers date the captain of a destroyer USS Benham...we got to go on that a few times.

I guess seeing this series "Carrier" reminds me of those days growing up and watching these ships come to port....if you get a chance watch it...think you will like it...

Box, I heard something on TV the other day about
the Nimitz, (pretty sure it was the Nimitz, nuclear
powered), that it could power itself for the next
100 years or so with it's existing nuclear power
source. It may have been even longer, my memory
sucks.
