First I must say the officiating was horrendous. Guys were driving to the hole and getting whacked. It is wonder a fight did not break out. The officials had no control over the game. It was a joke. Utah is not the same team without Majerus. You really appreciate what a good coach he was. I know he had to be watching the game going what kind of offense are we running. Now to why I think Utah's coach is an idiot. I know I am a coach and should not call other coaches this. I am sure he had his reasons. I am sure a lot of people think I am an idiot sometimes to. Maybe I am:) Well I do not understand what he was thinking. They cut the lead to 6 with 2:10 to go. Why in the heck do you intentionally foul. You play defense and try to get a turnover. If not you hope they miss and you get the ball with a little over a minute and a half left. You go hit a three or a two and you are right back in it. I thought they fouled way to early. No way you will win fouling with two to go. Free throws are to high of percentage compared to what you are throwing up. Just my opinion I could be wrong. Two minutes in basketball is a lot of time especially with the three point shot.
I did not have a play on the game:) Just my input as a coach.

That Utah D looked so pourous the whole 2nd half that maybe it was better to foul. I see your point though, and I ain't no coach, but I def would have played the full court press and played for a turnover with that much time left.
In disagreance I do however commend the officials for FINALLY letting these Mountain West Monday night games to be decided by the players. I have spent too many Monday nights this season whistle after whistle after whistle, just disgusting foul calls by these chickenhead refs. I can think of 2 games off hand where the refs prob cost me wins by fouling my guys out on rediculous calls. I like a good physical game anyways so hey, what do I know.

3 things I just cant understand coaches and players do........

1) They start fouling wayyyyyyy to early

2) They start hucking up 3's wayyyyyyy to early

3) the coaches let the opposing team shoot a three and go into ot when they are up by three instead of fouling and making the other team.........hit a free throw......intentionally miss the second free throw........get the rebound and score(lots of things have to happen to actually lose the game.

The Early fouls was a good tactic, but they do not score enough, BYU was awful in the FT's line!

You might not be old enough to remember that Valvano won a national championship by starting to foul Hou with almost 5 min left in the game and I believe he was down 10 at the time.

mmmm when they are shooting only 54% from the line during the game and even less when they started to foul i don't see how he was an idiot. they just didn't hit shots when needed. they had their chance and lost. of course if utah would have pulled the number i am sure he would be a genious then.

I think the reason they generally do that is so that they are not risking that while they are fouling the player he throws up a shot and the refs call it a 3-shot foul. Or worse, the player throws up a prayer as he's fouled, it goes in, and then they have a shot at a 4 point play and the win. Or they foul, the player hits both shots and then they steal the inbounds pass or the other team gets a 5 second call. There's a lot of things that can go wrong. All of those are very rare things indeed but all it takes is for it to happen once and you'll have a team's fans screaming for the coach's head. Plus, I think a coach is showing more confidence in their own team when they tell them to just play good D. Telling them to foul is somewhat saying "I don't think you can play good enough D to stop them."

I have seen teams foul up by three before, although it is pretty rare.

Valvano had his players foul Alvin Franklin with under two minutes left in the game. The score was tied at the time. He missed the front-end of a one-on-one. NC State rebounded, held the ball, and we all know what happened from there.

NC State was down 7 with midway thru the second half, when Guy Lewis had Houston go into a spread offense that ate clock, but took them out of their usual fastbreak style. That was the difference in the game.

I think that happened in the Indiana/Duke Sweet 16 game two years ago. Indy, up 4, fouled Jason Williams on a three and it went in. Of course Williams missed the free throw and the Hoosiers still advanced, winning by one, but that's the type of thing that can happen.
