Last Year:

Following a second return to the Super Bowl in three years, football fans were floored to see The Greatest Show on Earth start off with a 0 ? 5 record. Right Tackle John St. Clair quickly became the Rams scapegoat, but a more important concern was that the Rams had to find a quick patch for the injured Kurt Warner. In came a third year QB from West Virginia who at best had only played on practice squads. The Rams didn?t accomplish much with him running the plays as they only finished with a 6 ? 1 record when he started. Bulger finished with an ordinary 101.5 QB rating with a better than 2 ? 1 touchdown to interception ratio. Sadly for the Rams, their 0 ? 5 start punctured their season beyond any repair. With a face-lifted offensive line and now two very capable quarterbacks the Rams are be ready to return to their championship caliber.

What we learned from Last Year:

In the season that was, the Rams had an awful time protecting their quarterback. Most notably, John St. Clair got a lot of media attention for allowing free passes to opponents to take free shots at Kurt Warner. Johnnie probably won?t be seeing much time on the field this year. He was one of their biggest problems last year, but losing Orlando Pace on a line that already lacked depth was a real sting. Although most of the negative concentration was put on the offensive line, I don?t think they were the complete reason for the Ram?s donut start. Kurt Warner had problems with his thumb and pinky last year and he looked absolutely terrible. He made poor decisions and even worse throws. Possibly because he was rushed, but he is capable of far better. He?ll tell you his thumb was fine, but it?s safe to say that a 3/11 TD to INT ratio and a 67.4 quarterback rating is not what we are used to seeing out of him. Marc Bulger proved to be an excellent replacement for Kurt Warner. He came in with very little pressure on him simply because things could not get any worse for the Rams. He seemed relaxed throughout his time starting and he will definitely put a small burden on K.W. for the starting job. Both of these quarterbacks are very similar and both are capable of moving this offense. How lucky of the Rams to stumble upon another quality starter in their line of backups.

A forgotten man on this offense has been Marshall Faulk. Don?t worry, the Rams haven?t forgot about him, but the media has definitely quieted down on the hype around him. Apparently, the media believes Rikki Williams and Ladainian Tomlinson to be better choices at running back than Marshall. On a team that really struggled offensively last year Faulk had 10 TD?s and almost 1500 combined yards. Oh yeah, he only started 10 games. Once the pistons on this offense are back in motion on this potent offense Marshall Faulk will once again be in a league of his own.

On a lesser note, one thing that stood out from the Rams offense last year was the lack of 3rd option behind Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt. The Rams tried to replace Az-zahir Hakim with Terrence Wilkins, but that never seemed to work out. Az had problems holding on to the football, but he was definitely a threat to score whenever he touched it. The Rams were forced to move up Ricky Proehl to the third receiver spot, but he was a perfect fit for their 4th spot. St. Louis loves to spread their offense out and to be fully successful they like to have a speedy third receiver, and just a reliable 3rd down fourth receiver. It will be interesting to see if they can get that setup back.

What has changed?:

There is no secret among anyone who knows a crumb about the NFL that it is very hard to win games without a strong offensive line. The Rams couldn?t shelter their offensive leader last year, so to add help and depth they acquired Kyle Turley. Turley was the anchor on New Orleans? offensive line and he will bring much needed toughness to this line. There is worry about Orlando Pace holding out. He has been franchise tagged and has been offered a decent sized one-year contract but he would still like a long-term deal to secure his future with the organization. With both Orlando and Turley on the offensive line, Warner/Bulger should have the time they need to make their decisions. If Pace is a holdout, this team hasn?t really advanced much on the offensive line since last year.

This team suffered quite a few key injuries last year and they need to monitor closely how these players respond in training camp. In addition to Warner and his hand problems, Aeneas Williams is recovering from a broken leg, and cornerstones Marshall Faulk and Orlando Pace are also healing from different injuries. They need all of these players to get well soon so this team is back on the winning track once again.

Slowly but surely St. Louis? defense has creeped up to 13th best in the league. This young group still has a lot of work to do but the Rams continue to add talent to this gang. First-round pick Jimmy Kennedy is expected to help out a defensive line who has had mixed results in the past. More pressure on opposing QB?s would not hurt. St. Louis will require more out of Tackles Ryan Pickett and Damione Lewis for the line to have success. The Linebackers are highly touted with Robert Thomas and Tommy Polley performing well early in their careers and the coaches are also raving about Pisa Tinoisamoa who was drafted in the second round. Robert Thomas can now move back to his natural collegiate position of middle-linebacker and Tinoisamoa will take over his previous job on the outside. The secondary lost Dexter McCleon and Dre Bly in the off-season but Travis Fisher is supposed to step into the starting lineup without any problems. Even if he performs well opposite of Aeneas Williams, the Rams will still need to find some nickel and dime package defensive backs. Jason Sehorn has been moved to the Free Safety position where he will battle it out with Kim Herring. Either way Sehorn will add some depth the defensive back corps.

Although the defensive is looking better than it has in years past, the Ram?s success is still built on a high-powered offense. If they all return fit and in good physical shape look for the Rams to be a force once again.

O/U 9.5:

Don?t be conned into believing that the Rams have fallen off. If Pace is playing, and the team is healthy, then they are still the cream of the crop in their division. San Fran hasn?t changed much, Arizona is still garbage, and Seattle is ?improved?. If the Rams are moving in full steam they could sweep this division, but we?ll say that San Fran and Seattle yank a win from them. The Rams will still need 6 wins from the following: @Giants, Falcons, Packers, @Steelers, Ravens, @Bears, Vikings, @Browns, Bengals, @Lions. Just keep in mind that the besides last year?s bump, the Rams have been quite successful in the regular season in the past few years and if focused they can beat most teams with their offense alone.

Fantasy Sleeper:

Marshall Faulk has faded out of the top spot in most fantasy magazines. Although last year he was given some good competition from Priest Holmes for the #1 pick, this year he is being put behind guys such as Rikki Williams, Ladainian Tomlinson and even Clinton Portis. Here are a few things to nibble on: The Rams should return healthy and have added Kyle Turley to the offensive line, the Ram?s play Arizona and Seattle twice each this year, and finally the Rams now have two very good quarterbacks who can get the run this team. This is all good news for Marshall Faulk fans, but what is even better is that most people won?t take him with the first pick overall anymore. The first pick is not a no-brainer like it used to be, and if he slips down the board you should nab him without question.

If Pace ends his holdout, the Rams could have one of the best lines in the league. This would be welcome news for Warner, Faulk and the rest of the offense. It would also help their Def. out by giving them more of a rest.

I look for the Rams to return to form this year. Great write-up Dave.

I agree.

I'm tempted to play over because I think St. Louis can get at least 4 wins in their division, possibly more. On top of that their schedule isn't too bad, they play against Chicago, Cincy, Detroit, Baltimore, and Minnesota.

10 wins is definitely attainable for this team.

The Rams have been to the Super Bowl every other year over the past four years. Will this be their year again? I certainly hope so but then again I am a biased opinion.

Their schedule is looks pretty easy this year. They should open the season with no worse than a 3-1 record before the bye week. And they have a very favorable last 7 weeks of the season against the likes of the Bears, Cardinals, Vikings, Browns, Seahawks, Bengals, and Lions. They should be able to take this division barring any injuries and in my opinion take go over the total of 9.5 wins.

I really feel good about the Rams offense this year. With a rebuilt offensive line, Warner & Faulk should have great seasons. I know that Pace is not signed as of yet, but I am sure he will sign for the one year contract and be in the lineup sometime in September. I've been reading in the Dispatch that Warner's passes have had lots of zip to it during camp and that he has been throwing extra long passes to prove that his hand is finally healthy. I also see Martz not hesitating to yank Warner this season if his hand is not really healed and if things go bad early in the season. Faulk has been working out in the offseason like a monster to help prevent injury, I just hope he doesnt run out of gas at the end of the season. It also sounds like they might have a finally found a decent replacement for Az Hakim with Shaun McDonald & Kevin Curtis who both are pushing Troy Edwards for that spot.

This is what scares me most about the Rams. They dont have any quality cornerbacks except for Aenas who is recovering from last year's injury. They did have 2 nice pick ups in the draft with Groce & Walton. But if Aenas can't recover completely, it looks like their might be lots of shootouts. So like bubba4 said in another post, the OVER might make for some good plays this season. Other than the cornerbacks, the Rams seem to have a nice defense. They have a very strong defensive line with Little, Wistrom, and rookie Kennedy up the middle. I believe Robert Thomas will be playing the middle linebacker position over Jamie Duncan, who i think stinks. And that boy from Hawaii, Pisa T. is pretty sick from what I have been reading.

Now if we can only beat the Bucs. I know they aren't on the schedule but it looks like the NFC goes thru them and the Rams have not beaten the Bucs since their Super Bowl year. And then again, the Rams got a very favorable call in that game that propelled them to their lone Super Bowl year.

Boy after reading Vegas Dave's writeup and putting my two cents in my juices are flowing now. Can't wait for September :D

what is your take on warner. he was hurt last year, but his poor decision dates back to the sb loss to the pats. he consistently makes ad throws when under pressure( in his def so does everyone else.) but his decision making scares me. he forces throws that are just not there. is this do to injury or have def cord caught up to him ? he has had great success in a very short time. furthermore, marshal is the key to their season anyway. bulger did a better job than kurt did, but he benefited from marshal touching the ball more. look at the stats for faulk after kurt went out. the rams were more balanced. just my thoughts. martz is a stubborn sob, and he cost the rams games last year being so arrogant. curious what some of the rams' fans think ?

Elvis:

I agree with you that Marshall is the key this season and not Warner. The Rams have proven they can win without Warner in the lineup but I just dont see it happening with Faulk out. Lamar Gordon is adequate and fits the system but he is no Marshall Faulk.

As for my take on Warner, there are so many reasons for his ineffectiveness after the SB loss to New England. But before I start I want to say that I put all blame on that SB loss on Mike Martz. He has one of the best running backs in the league yet he refuses to run. Not until the 4th quarter did he finally start using Faulk more. I dont want to take anything away from the Patriots but god damn why don't you rush a little bit to keep the defense honest.. Okay back to Warner, the injury to his thumb & pinky has really effected his passes. He did not have the tightest spirals to begin with and not being able to grip the ball caused his passes to lack the zip it should have. Second, the offensive line sucked last year. They did not give him any time to throw. I am so glad that bum John St Clair will not be starting anymore. I felt sorry for Warner because he was taking a beating from that right side of the line. I felt like I was watching Jim Everret all over again. Third, he did not have all the offensive weapons that he was accustomed to. Who would have thought that losing Az Hakim would hurt. But with Terrence Wilkins & Troy Edwards not producing he was just left with Bruce & Holt. Granted they had Ricky Proehl but he is more of just a 3rd down receiver. Another thing I noticed was that defenses were hitting Bruce & Holt much harder which caused for many dropped passes. Fourth, Martz is an arrogant mo'fo. He rather live & die with the pass with Warner rather than handing off or dumping off passes to Marshall to take some heat off the guy. Martz also should have kept Warner out of the lineup after making it to a 5-5 record and stay with the hot hand. Instead he brought him back at the start of a 3 game road trip against. Granted the start of the trip was only against the Skins but Warner still wasnt 100%.

So why was Bulger able to win when Warner couldnt? One, he was healthy. Two, Martz balanced out the offense by using Faulk a lot more. Third, the offensive line seemed to gel a little bit by week 6 but they still sucked. The offensive line was a patchwork line from the get go from what I remember. Everyone just seemed to be dropping like flys.

So if Warner really has zip on his passes and he is 100% like I am reading & if Pace signs soon and the offensive line can gel during camp, & if Edwards, McDonald, or Curtis develops into that third speedy receiver, Warner should have a great season. I know those are a lot of ifs but I can see all happening this year with Warner returning to his MVP caliber play. And if the offense is clicking this year, I see Martz being arrogant as ever and try to prove a point and just unleash Warner and light up the scoredboard as in years past. Should make for a fun season for Rams fans like myself or it can all just backfire lol. Only time will tell.

Anyway, thats my take & sorry for being long winded with the writeup. :D

In my opinion what happened to Warner is simply passing too much. I think the Patriots laid out a game plan that showed how to beat the Rams and other teams followed it. For some reason the Rams, or should I say Martz, didn't like to run the ball as much as pass. Warner was hurt last year, but not only that he was forced to throw the ball alot more because of the playcalling. Teams defended this offense like the Patriots did, just drop back and put more people in coverage. The Pats crowded all the passing lanes, and it made it tough for Warner to do his job.

When Bulger came in, the Rams then went to plan B, and that was let Marshall carry the offense. He was fairly successful running the ball (as he usually is) and that set up an easier time for Bulger to pick teams apart. When Warner originally got the starting job, the focus was to give Marshall as many touches as possible so the attention would be off Warner. Once they realized how good he was, they started to use him more than Faulk.

Martz often talks about learning from their mistakes from last year, and if they learned anything then they have to go back to what worked originally, and that was giving Marshall the ball, and then letting Kurt pick apart the leftovers. If they are healthy they can easily win 10 games. Teams simply cannot score as much as the Rams.
