Multiple front office executives told Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports that they expect Justin Verlander to hit the trade block sometime in the next couple weeks.
The Tigers have made public their desire to cut payroll, and they currently have the American League's second-worst record at 34-42. Verlander is making $28 million in 2017, is owed $56 million the next two seasons and is 34. In other words, it's not difficult to connect the dots here. Verlander's full no-trade clause doesn't look like a stumbling block, as Lynn Henning of the Detroit News says that Verlander "will absolutely accept a trade to a valid contender."
Verlander has been a disappointment this season with a 4.47 ERA, but he'd still be one of the best starters to hit the market and there would surely be interest.
