An instant poll taken by CNN after Thursday's vice presidential debate found that voters thought Republican candidate Paul Ryan beat Vice President Joe Biden, by a 48-44 margin.
The results remain within the poll's 5-point margin of error, however, indicating that the debate didn't have much of an effect on voter preferences, at least in the immediate aftermath.
That is unsurprising, given the limited effect that vice presidential debates have historically had on presidential elections. For both campaigns, the goal of tonight's debate was to gain momentum as the campaign heads into its final three weeks, and set the stage for next presidential match-up. To that end, both vice presidential candidates were successful Thursday night.
