Was Blanton cheating?

Blanton had a dark substance on the outside tip of his cap throughout the game and continued to rub his fingers on it before pitching. Is this allowed? Why was nothing said about it?

As a Rays fan, I will say that he should have been made to change his cap. I have never seen a pitcher that had a dark colored substance on the tip of the outside of his hat like that before, especially in a world series game where everybody was watching.

Rays manager Joe Maddon came out in midgame to complain to plate umpire Tom Hallion about a spot on Blanton?s cap.

?It was rather dark,? Maddon said. ?I was concerned about that early on.?

Blanton pleaded not guilty.

?They rub the balls up with whatever they rub them up with, and you rub it up and get it on your hand,? he said. ?It?s nothing sticky. Anybody can go touch it. It?s just basically just dirt from the ball.?

I would be willing to bet he has worn the same hat all year long and as everyone that knows baseball can attest that the players are very superstitious and methodical as to how they go about things. I'm sure it's just a spot on the hat that's been touched thousands of times throughout the season that has darkened.

all these rays fans need to stop crying. nobody makes manny or biggio clean up their helmet every game. his hat always looks like that, this is just the first time someone has pointed it out. its the world series and every little detail gets blown up. longoria and pena are not hitting and the rays won't win with those guys going 0 for 29.

Unless they threw that world series patch on one of his old hats he got that hat when the series started.

he cheated

Pena and Longoria are hitting .000. They're 0-for-29 with 15 strikeouts. thats why the rays lost.

Didn't see the patch. If that's the case, then it's obviously some sort of foreign substance that is allowing him to put some super nasty stuff on the ball and that is why the Rays can't touch him. That's exactly where I would try to hide something if I was cheating, right on the tip of my hat where everyone can see it.

philly ain't good enough? have we been watching the same series:shrug:

The whole NL sucks. These kids from Tampa had a big let down after getting through Boston. Any other AL team could beat Philly and all their brain cramps on the bases and in the field. Rollins is good for 2 errors a game himself. Same thing happens in other sports. Stronger divisions/conferences beat the crap out of eat other just to limp into the final games/series and lose to a scrub team.

It's the same hat he has had since he came to Philly. The World Series logo was put on the old hat. He has not lost while wearing the hat so he kept the hat. If he was trying to hide something why would he put it on the outside of the hat. Guess you have to look for any excuse when you are down 3-1.

Lots of pitchers do this, not sure why more managers don't complain. I thought it was generally accepted in baseball. Have seen it half a dozen times this past season, pitchers going to the same dark spot on a hat. It might be the mud, it's easy to find out, just look at his hat.
