I guess I've gambled long enough, that except for the NFL, I really can't stand to watch games I bet on. Maybe its been sports overload, but the handicapping is the best part. Some of these toilet bowl games and NBA games are absolutely painful to watch. Better off spending time with the family or handicapping upcoming games. No satellite dish for me and I don't see that changing.

for me, I HAVE to watch the games...even if I dont bet on it...because I can cap that game even if the one team got blown out...you cant just look at the box score, so thats where I think watching the game helps

You can't see every game, at least not in college football or basketball. And how often have you placed a bet on a game where you didn't have a strong opinion only because it was on TV? If you go thru the box scores carefully, you can get a good idea of game flow.

i am a recreational bettor that takes it seriously but wagers conservatively...i`m not going to lie and say i make a living doing it(i laugh when i hear that) or anything even remotely akin to that...but i occasionally stretch out on a play that i really like, and, i agree,i don`t need the aggravation....i just can`t sit through 60 minutes when i post a big play or make a larger wager...type a personality?...maybe..been burned enough to know i feel better not having seen the big fumble,or the stupid coaching decision(june jones onsides kick with over 5 minutes left,3 timeouts and a quick strike offense...uggghhh....:p )......feel blessed that got a push on the under tonight....nice to hear somebody else has tired of being masochistic.....nice post....made me laugh ....you feel like you are the only one sometimes....g.l.

Betting unders is another area in which I really don't like to watch, or I'll just watch the first half (or few innings). The last 3 minutes of an NBA game is very unnerving to an under bettor; if I lose, I don't want to be tortured seeing how the game went over with 10 seconds left. If I win, I'd rather not have to sweat out the ridiculous foul-a-rama that often goes on. Gotta wonder just how many years gambling can take off of our lives.

I considered getting a dish a couple years ago, but whenever I go to a sports bar to see all the NFL games, I find myself completely exhausted at the end of the day. I feel like I played in 2 games myself. Any more than than 2 games on at once is just too much overload for the brain, and whatever cells are still left in it.

Always felt we were on the same page. I never watch games, always needing to go on to the next games or tomorrows games, or just relax.

I catch glimpses and some games late in the day, but usually fall asleep. Once I've made a play on a game, I move on to the next one, knowing I have no control of the outcome.

When I review my plays each morning, all I need is the boxscores.

I will live a little longer that way. I don't need to know a referee helped me or hurt me, those things wash out. I don't need to know I lost on a half court shot, or win it. I don't need to know someone missed two free throws at the end of a game to help me or hurt me. I don't need to know an empty netter cost me or helped me.

I guess if you do this recreationally, I can see you might feel a need to watch your games.

I simply don't have time for it. My wife has been wanting me to buy a big screen plasma for quite some time. I just can't justify it with the amount of TV we watch - almost none.

Each to there own, but with a dime on the line on Sunday night, I prefer watching the Sopranos.

Great points, KC. Agree on the Sopranos although I was disappointed in the episodes this season. I think they're running out of storylines. I like Curb Your Enthusiasm also; Larry David is a great writer. I love how he'd have 4 or 5 different plots going in a Seinfeld episode then somehow weave them all together at the end.

For some reason, I can watch MLB even with a wager, and still stay relaxed. Must be the relaxing pace of the game.

Gotta add my vote to being a lover of Curb also. Larry David is a genius. Bill Belichick WAS a genius last year, funny how those things change.
But about watching games. If all there was to handicapping was knowing which team SHOULD win based on how they play then any 4th grader could pick games better than any of us. For me my best game is hockey and it is the game I know the very least about. Football is my passion but like so many others I have had a dreadful year picking winners.
I think it is because I am not biased when I do my hockey picks. Just a thought.
When in Boston you guys should check out a band called Curbside. The members are all Big Larry David fans.

As of this year, I'm trying not to watch the games I wager on. To much stress. I hate to see games that lose because of a bullshit call or trash time backdoor covers.

I'll be the first one to admit, everyone can tell if I am watching a game because I tend to come on the forums and release my frustration.

As for watching the games?

I do watch a lot of games, but I don't really factor a lot of what I see(depends on a lot of variables) in that particular game into handicapping their next game. You gotta remember every game is prepared for differently, film is studied on prior games...the list goes on and on.

How many times do you see people after they watched a team and had just lost a particular bet on that team, say "I'm gonna bet against them the rest of the year....they're pathetic" or "this team is clueless....I'll never bet them again"

Basically, just to put it simple, public perception kills a lot of bettors! For example, A lot of bettors base everything they play a certain week on what they say the previous week.

Personally, I really don't care if I watch the game I have bet or not and each sport is a little different..especially baseball with the heavy daily playing schedule, I like to keep ahead always working on the next days games very early and just use the previous game or games as maybe indicators of certain things that may add or take away from the analysis.

I'm with Valuist and KC. I find I break fewer things and curse less when I avoid watching the games. :look:

The handicapping is a source of satisfaction and pleasure on a par with the cash (Ha! What cash?). For me, watching the games is an integral part of the process.

But I'd give up the betting before I'd give up the games that mean something.

Speaking of watching games, this Giants/Philly game has to be one of the toughest to watch considering I am on the side of the Giants. Although the Philly backers probably have an equal amount of heartburn.

I can't recall a game where so many penalties and turnovers have figured so prominently in critical situations. I'm sure there have been plenty, but this is killing me.
