western carolina -6-: another play that's not going to be too popular but it fits nicely in my system. catamounts now playing their seventh road game in a row (previous six all losers) and have lost the last six games in statesboro outright. before you perceive ol loophole a little loopy, let's look behind these numbers. yes, western is playing their seventh consecutive roady, but only one in the last 18 days. that one was eight days ago at unc asheville, just a sledride down the mountain from cullowhee. cats lost that game in overtime, but remember, former wolfpack great eddie biedenbach has a pretty decent team in asheville - you may remember them giving the tarheels a good run in chapel hill a few weeks ago. and, while this use to be a rivalry game, it remains so more for unca than for western.
meanwhile, cats are a team that was picked preseason to compete with app st for the top of soco north, but have struggled a bit with their opening schedule. however, they are a deep veteran team that outmatches the eagles at virtually every position. eagles start two frosh and a walkon sophmore, and play three more frosh in their rotation. they have four wins, only one against a div I team, a two point win over a mediocre ga st. they were picked to finish dead last in their division.
cats are already 0-2 in conference, dropping tight games at two tough homecourts in samford and ut chat. they travel to davidson saturday, and dropping this game and at davidson would leave them 0-4 in conference and virtually done for the year. win tonight and saturday and they're back in the race. wc coach larry hunter is another former ncsu asst, knows his stuff and knows all of the above to be true. expect a top effort tonight from his team as they put away the eagles by double digits.
