Anyone read the prepared statement from Paterno he wrote prior to his death that his family just released? Claiming that this was a non-football issue?!! That family needs to just shut the fuck up and go away. Amazing that he died in denial.

Nothing too breaking in the latest report but it does conclude from the evidence that all 4 men failed to report their findings to protect the school and program.

Rot in Hell PSU

?Four of the most powerful people at The Pennsylvania State University ? President Graham B. Spanier, Senior Vice President-Finance and Business Gary C. Schultz, Athletic Director Timothy M. Curley and Head Football Coach Joseph V. Paterno ? failed to protect against a child sexual predator harming children for over a decade.?

?These men concealed Sandusky?s activities from the Board of Trustees, the University community and authorities. They exhibited a striking lack of empathy for Sandusky?s victims by failing to inquire as to their safety and well-being, especially by not attempting to determine the identity of the child who Sandusky assaulted in the Lasch Building in 2001. ...

?These individuals, unchecked by the Board of Trustees that did not perform its oversight duties, empowered Sandusky to attract potential victims to the campus and football events by allowing him to have continued, unrestricted and unsupervised access to the University?s facilities and affiliation with the University?s prominent football program.?

Paterno also wrote, "This is not a football scandal and should not be treated as one."

I agree. I'm sure if Sandusky was a retired science professor he would still have had access to the facilities like he did and things like him showering with young boys at the school would have been treated exactly the same way.

His family releasing this shows that Paterno's powers and influence still goes on. One of his sons is a lawyer. How the heck he doesn't realize how bad this makes Paterno and his family look is unfathomable.

That's what I don't get. Regardless of what his family thinks...there is no way they will turn public opinion. All they are doing is vilifying themselves more.

This is a football issue because if not for protecting the power of the university (which is based solely on the storied history of its football program) they would have reported it. If this goes down at a mid to low-tier school they wouldn't have fathomed doing what psu did.

An interesting hypothetical would be the question of what other marquee programs would have done in this situation.

What's worse is that it appears Patrrno spearheaded the cover-up.

In 2001, the plan of action included reporting the incident to the authorities. This plan was scrapped after Curley consulted Paterno. How many lives did Sandusky ruin after the initial incident in 1998?

It'd be difficult to imagine anyone outside of his immediate circle supporting Paterno's role at this point.

Of course he did! Not one person can argue that the hierarchy of that entire university started with him at the top. He had the final say on everything.

If the world were right then Paterno's punishment would be to sit there and watch his own grandchildren get anally raped. Those kids Sandusky abused were someone's grandchildren. It's obvious that this strikes quite a nerve with me. Anyone with children can probably understand.

I'm equally disgusted Saint. No doubt that Paterno is fortunate to have passed when he did. He deserved the worst for his crimes. Dozens, if not hundreds of lives were ruined since 2001. Even more were ruined since the first incident that local law enforcement swept under the rug in 1998

Been following the Paterno story since it broke...from the start I knew he and the other 3 were wrong....in the state of Pennsylvania its the law to report{ in the other 49 states also}..you 4 are all mandated reporters..A simple call to CPS to report what you heard,suspect,saw,etc....starts the ball rolling...you don't even have to give your name to CPS...just report what you heard..it's their job to investigate it....once its reported " the clock starts".......now CPS has been known to screw up but they send out an investigator who interviews and then reports back...calls are made, people are interviewed,etc.....
I have just retired after 38 yrs in education...I would say I called CPS over 150 times in those years...as a teacher, coach and principal.....CPS in NY State would call and set up an interview within 24 hours...the same thing would have happened in Pa.
What were these guys thinking? For Paterno to have one of his coaches report to him 1st hand about what he saw...forget the AD,VP or Pres....you broke the law you stupid ass...failing to report a
42.42 issued under the Child Protective Services Law, 23 Pa.C.S. or a 41.41.....my daughter who teaches in Philly{ same state} says they call DHS{ Dept of Health Service}..its the same as CPS and she has taught 4 yrs in an inner school and has called 10 times.....
One telephone call......and a lot of innocent kids could of been saved......and all those people that were supporting JoPa should just ask themselves....one phone call....

Once again the NCAA is showing they are the biggest pieces of shit alive. They "need more time" before making a decision.

Uh....how much more of a lack of institutional control is even possible? Knowingly covering up for a child rapist and allowing him to use FOOTBALL facilities?

NCAA...you drop the fucking hammer when a kid sells his jersey. Oh, you stayed on a friend's couch who happens to be a pro football player and he bought you breakfast? Out 6 games. Allow a rapist to craft his trade on campus? Hmm, what should we do?

All the proof is out there that this was a cover-up.

What in the FUCK is there to wait on?

What's worse, point shaving? Or knowingly allowing children to get lured into showers by the promise of your football gear as gifts and then getting raped?

Man our society has some fucked up priorities. They need a 2 year death sentence, anything less is reprehensible.

Appreciate the insights and agree with them all.

There is criminal activity here and one of the key criminals is still a professor at PS and another, though no longer there, is receiving $300k a year.

Take the statue down and press charges. Penn State should get the death penalty for at least one year. Just compare what happened there to SMU and that is an easy call to make.

Easiest bet on the board...the NCAA will do nothing except (maybe) a slap on the wrist.

I was a very big Joe Paterno fan & not only am I sick about what went on with Sandusky, but I'm just as angry with the cover-up....

Imo the actions taken by Paterno & the others remind me of what went on with the Catholic Church. These people were more interested in taking care of the schools (church) rep as well as their own instead of the well being of the children....

The strong have an obligation to watch out for the weak & the vulnerable & the leaders from PSU didn't do that....

Also the statue of Paterno must come down !!

On the course!
I'm absolutely amazed at how person after person in those 'on the street' interviews down there just continue to forgive grampa Joe for all of this!

They really do treat that ass-clown like one of their family down there. Too bad they can't see those young boys as one of their family.

Everytime anyone outside of that hick town hears the name Paterno, all they will think about is the Sandusky "thing". His 50 year football legacy is over, whether those people care to admit it, or not.

Boys had a thread about OJ Simpson, and NO ONE even THINKS about the Juice as one of the best rushers in the game when they hear his name anymore......they only think of him as a murderer. (Even if he did beat the rap)

Penn St will have to remove that statue, to save any kind of face with the real world.

These are crimes that should be tried in a court of law & are not under the jurisdiction of the NCAA so they should stay out of this....

Wrong.

Why didn't the PSU administration report this?

To protect their football program. I'd love for you to give me another reason that makes sense.

Lack of institutional control. Would like to hear you argue that one as well.

This is criminal but it's also intertwined with the football program. They won't get the death penalty and one could argue the damage has been done but this certainly fits under the umbrella of what the NCAA can punish. But, they will use the same lame ass excuse that you posted and duck difficult decisions like they always do.
