Police: Man Accused of Rape Beaten In Retaliation
(MOBILE, Ala.) March 4 -- Police say family members of an alleged rape victim took the law into their own hands. Investigators say three men beat up another man who is accused of raping a 13-year-old girl.
The fight happened on Dauphin Island Parkway near Tampa Street in Mobile.
Neighbors say the victim's family had been hunting this guy down. He was walking down D.I.P. when they threw their car into park in the middle of the street, jumped out and starting beating him.
You wont find any sympathy among the folks on Dauphin Island Parkway.
"I think it was really horrible and I don't feel sorry for him," one witness said.
They all saw it happen and they all heard the story. And they all say James Berryhill had it coming. He's accused of one of their 13-year-old neighbors.
Any sympathy you find around here is for that family, not for him.
Her family took the law into their own hands, before police could get Berryhill, they did. Police say they beat Berryhill with a metal pipe, broke his nose and put him in ICU.
Neighbors say they don't condone that kind of vigilantism, but they can't blame it, either.
Berryhill already had a less-than-sterling reputation around here. He is known by the nickname "Peeping Tom" and his rap sheet includes charges dating back to 1983.
None of the attackers is facing any charges at this point. Mobile Police say the incident is being sent to a grand jury to determine if any charges will come.
