Wilson broke the news the day before the Stars face St. Louis in a key Western Conference game Wednesday.
"These are core guys," Wilson said. "These are guys who have been here for a long time and been part of a lot of winning, a lot of adversity. That's how you really become tight. This isn't a normal trade. It's like pulling your arms out of the socket. How long will it take to grow new arms? We have to grow them by tomorrow night."
Players were stunned after winning the Stanley Cup with Nieuwendyk and Langenbrunner in 1999 and going back to the finals the next season.
"It was a sad day in the dressing room," defenseman Richard Matvichuk said. "Tears were flowing on both sides. We have to bring in the new guys [Wednesday]. That's a big test to overcome. We overcame the coaching change. We have to overcome this."
