fresno state/wake forest - first fresno loses returning point guard tito maddox before the season, now replacement chris sandy finds out he can't go through college on correspondence courses. what's fresno's answer - just turned 18 frosh matt mitchell, not even being recruited by fresno before august, steps in and lays in 17 against powerful so cal. why does the prospect seem doubtful that this kid can fly across the country and duplicate this performance in the big apple limelight against a quick veteran deacon point guard?

will the bulldogs be focused in the big apple? last time fresno visited an exotic location was february of last year. i remember seeing shots of smiling bulldogs romping around honolulu on scooters right before hawaii handed them their ass with an 18 point spanking. truth is, tark's adolescent bulldogs often evidence symptoms of attention deficit disorder when faaced with distraction.

meanwhile veteran deacons start four seniors and a junior who've seen it all. six current deacs were on the team for the nit championship game last year. new coach skip prosser led his xavier team to the 1999 nit semis, losing to clemson and beating oregon. got to give the experience edge the seacons.

also, wake is the only nit team in the tournament to win a game on the road, at arkansas to boot. really think the one point win against a tough unc-w team has operated to benefit this team. they have the big bodies to match up inside with the bulldogs, and speed out front to negate fresno's quick guard play. got to think, for a lot of reasons, including california recruiting, fresno's big win at so cal was the big game of this tourney for them. with the line at 2- and falling, i'm going to hold off and wait to catch the deacons right before game time at the smallest possible number.

more later.

Nice write up. I'm with you, Coach Prosser always got Xavier to play hard and don't see him allowing a Fresno team to take this experienced Wake club in this spot.

loophole: hello - my name is loophole and i am a degenerate sports bettor, even to the point of beting on south alabama against louisville.

rest of degenerate sports bettors support group (with a tone of pity and disbelief): hello loophole!!

seriously, i don't think i've ever witnessed a sorrier performance by a supposedly decent basketball team than that of the jags playing the cards. lost by 54; shot in the 30% range; almost as many to's (36) as points (38). so why in the hell would anyone consider betting on them now? ah - glad you asked.

says jag guard demetrice williams about the debacle, "the pressure of playing on tv in pitino's first game back really got to us." i hereby nominate this snippet for gross understatement of the year. jags are rebuilding this year, no doubt, having lost four seniors (three starters) to graduation and two other players to transfer. two of the graduating seniors were all-sun belt first teamers c virgil stanescu and g ravante dantsler.

but this is a team that knows something about winning basketball games. s ala finished last year 21-11 and made a postseason nit appearance. coach bob wettlich is 74-44 in his tenure in mobile and has won a share of the regular season sun belt championship 3 of his 4 years there. now these guys are 8 point dogs to marist for god's sake. i see where marist has a good deal of players back but geez - marist? they're 2-0 with a ten point win over columbia and an eight point win over drexel. everything i see has them picked somewhere in the middle to the bottom of the maac. i just feel that jags put better athletes on the floor and this line is an overreaction to the blowout loss.

great quote from coach wettlich on the prognosis: "hopefully, we'll come together as a team. maybe we'll be able to build a little chemistry being together for four or five days on this road trip. marist is another game and i've got to believe we've got them overconfident right now."

this is a coach that knows his team just got down and quit in the louisville game. just a hunch says he'll bring them ready to play tonight. god knows they shouldn't be blinded by the limelight in poughkeepsie.

south alabama +8 for one unit. good luck everyone.

add:

georgia southern +7-: double down's got this one pegged. anyone who watched the game with georgetown saw that hoyas were ragged and bulldogs just a little less so. no sharp play at all by either team. rest assured that this is a big respect game for southern and they will be up.

ball state +15: ok, ok i believe, though i feel in danger of being trampled in the stampede to get on this one.
