I usually ease into the college season, but I do have one good sized play this week.....

Washington -18 vs San Jose St

I'm thinking the Huskies will present a lot of value early on during the 2006 campaign. This team was ravaged by injuries a year ago, and has some solid talent in place from the top 25 recruiting classes in 2001, 2002 and 2004. Washington's biggest question mark is the OL, where they have 5 solid starters but zero depth. The Spartan's biggest concern is their front 4, where they don't return a starter from an average unit last year.

Avg Play:

Michigan -25.5 vs Vandy

Vandy has had great success as a road dog but they are walking into the wrong place, at the wrong time. No chance of a look ahead this week for UM as Central Michigan is on deck, and this team is just begging for the chance to take out its 2005 frustrations on someone. This UM team is more talented than last years, and most importantly, nearly 100% healthy (for now). Reports out of practice are that the team is very spirited, especially the defense under new coordinator Ron English. Mike Debord is back as OC, a position he held from 97-99, a stretch where UM went 32-5 and won three bowl games (two BCS). There has been an overhaul in the run blocking schemes where you'll see more zone blocking (a la Denver Broncos) and misdirection. It seems to be suiting Mike Hart and Kevin Grady quite well. Look for UM to win this one 38-6 while controlling the ball and hitting deep play action passes.

Small play:

NIU +18 @ OSU

OSU has been good against the number in home openers, but this is a classic look ahead game against the best team in the MAC. Seeing this one 38-28ish.

GL all, may add later.

Sorry to burst your bubble but Wahington does NOT have 5 solid starters at OL. Washington graduated 4 of their 5 offensive lineman from last year (a mediocre group if there ever was one) and none of the current starters were good enough to unseat the mediocre guys who just left. All reports out of practice has this unit looking worse than anticipated.

Word out of Ann Arbor is that Schilling could be the first O-lineman in years to play as a true freshman. Justin Boren is another big time lineman, and both have even caught the eye of Bo, and that speaks volumes. However, Boren has a bad ankle and will see the redshirt. I still find it difficult to believe they would spend a year of eligibility on Steve unless he plays a substantial amount.

nice to see you back CWood...always worry every year about my fav guys to tail cominbg back, since alotta guys dont post much during the offseason...if you got a big play, count me in, so Wash it is ...throwing them in a par im playin, and ognna add them as a straight when my POS local posts NCAAFB lines...got my online sportsbook $ wrapped up on my other plays, but gonna tail you on both...agree with Taoist too, NIU will have aot of value, returning a solid offense that includes a player flying well below the radar in their beast of a tackle Doug Free (considered a sure shot top 5 pick in 2007 by a handful of top publications, if he stays healthy)...I def will be playing NIU for at least a unit, but because guys who know the MAC better than I know myself like Gman find alot of holes and negatives in the play, im playing it small...Wolfe, with a proven QB to take alot of the load of his shoulders, and a top 3 tackle in the nation blocking for him, has alot of value, especially with a team like NIU who the public doesnt really give a SHOT too vs a powerhouse, that many people have palying for the National Champ if they can get by a big crater in week 2, the efending national champs, Texas

Thanks all.

BSman, those who have seen practices are saying Schilling is the third-best tackle on the team already, and that he has a great chance to play this year. The preference is always to redshirt freshman OL, but Schilling may be the exception to the rule. In any case, from all account he is the heir apparent at tackle and will be a 3/4 year starter after this year. Also, Justin Boren (another true freshmen lineman) will play once his sprained ankle is healed up. He and Schilling could well end up being another Backus/Hutchinson type combo for UM down the road.

Nastics, maybe "solid" was a bad choice of words when describing the Washington OL. The point I was trying to make is that Washington has five servicable starters, but the depth is very bad. 3 players do have starting experience so I expect they will be able to handle the job against a very weak SJ State front line. Fair enough

Fair enough

Be advised though wagering on Washington for the forseeable future is going to be very risky. If San Jose State had any kind of defense this game would be close going into the 4th quarter.
The 06 Washington offensive line could be their worst in a 5 year run of weak offensive lines. To give you an example Ryan Tolar, who I saw quite often in HS and who is not very good, is slated to back up Clay Walker ( a starter) at gaurd...this as a true freshman. Steve Shilling, had he chose to go to Washington would clearly be the best offensive lineman on the team..one of the reasons he rejected Washington and chose to go to Michigan.
