Georgia defense among worst in SEC

Athens ? It?s official. Georgia has one of the worst defenses in the Southeastern Conference.
That?s according to the season?s cumulative statistics.
After giving up 49 points to Florida on Saturday ? and 87 in the last two games ? the Bulldogs sank to 10th in the league against the score at 23.4 points per game. Against the three best teams Georgia faced, Alabama, LSU and Florida, it allowed 128 points, or 42.6 a game.
The Bulldogs also are 11th in passing defense (217.6 yards per game) and ninth in total defense (306.7). The one thing Georgia does well is defend the run. It?s second in the conference at 88.9 yards per game. However, it gave up a season high 185 yards to the Gators.
That?s certainly not what anyone expected from a unit that returned nine starters and finished third in total defense (14th nationally) and scoring defense (18th) in 2007.
Junior cornerback Asher Allen was asked what he would have said if told in the preseason if Georgia would be ranked in the bottom third of the SEC in defense after 10 weeks.
?I probably would have said, ?Nah. No way. I don?t believe that,? ? Allen said.
Said senior defensive tackle Corvey Irvin: ?That?s what the stats say; that?s what we are ? We?ve got to do something about that. We?ve got to step up, make something happen.?
In defense of Georgia?s defense, it didn?t have much of a chance against Florida. The Gators had scoring drives of 1, 10, 25 and 41 yards. Three were off of turnovers; one came off a failed onsides kick.
?It may be hard for everybody to believe with that many points, but the defense actually played with a high amount of energy and played pretty well, in the first half especially,? coach Mark Richt said. ?We just put them in really bad situations offensively and in the kicking game. Overall I thought the defense played pretty good.?
Criticism of defensive coordinator Willie Martinez, however, is misplaced, Allen said.
?I know how much work coach Martinez puts into it. It?s never been him,? he said. ?He?s getting a lot of bashing for everything but if you look at the film, it?s always going to be about the players. He?s making the greatest calls. We?re just not executing it. It?s always going to be up to us.?
Richt sticks with Walsh
Richt does not anticipate a personnel change at place-kicker, where freshman Blair Walsh has missed five of his last eight attempts, including four from 40 yards or less.
?I hate that he?s missed them,? Richt said. ?I really don?t get too worried about an extra point and field goal man if he?s striking the ball well and not missing them by a lot. If he truly had the yips and was missing them by a mile, I would be much more concerned. That?s not happening.?
Walsh said he came to the practice fields Monday and kicked 35 balls to work on his mechanics. He said he thinks he was leaning back too much and swinging around the ball.
?I think I?ve got it worked out now,? he said.
Tight ends get catches
For the first time all season Georgia tight ends had more than one catch in a game. Bruce Figgins, Tripp Chandler and Aron White, who scored a touchdown, each had a reception against Florida. In past years tight ends have been primary targets.
Chandler, a senior who began the season as the starting tight end, was playing for the first time in four games because of a shoulder injury.
?I think he did all right but he looked a little like a guy that hadn?t played in a month when it came to blocking,? Richt said. ?He wasn?t his normal self. Hopefully, if there are no setbacks, he?ll get better.?
For the third consecutive week, CBS has exercised its six-day option and will not select which of the Nov. 15 SEC games it will televise until Sunday. According to the SEC office, CBS, ESPN and Raycom will select from South Carolina at Florida, Mississippi State at Alabama and Georgia at Auburn. The CBS game will kick off at 3:30 p.m., ESPN at 7:45 p.m. and Raycom at 12:30 p.m. ESPN2 has already selected Vanderbilt at Kentucky at 8 p.m. ? Linebacker Darius Dewberry (hip flexor) and defensive end Jeremy Lomax (shoulder contusion) did not practice Monday. Both are considered questionable. ? Georgia is 16-4 under Richt after a loss.
