Akron -17 easy winner
The visitors from Denton have failed to cover in 11 straight as a road pup and in 14 of their last 15 versus non-Sun Belt Conference opponents. That's not good and North Texas will go down hard in this one, too.
Akron opened the year with a solid showing at Penn State before upsetting N.C. State on the road. So, it's a little understandable that the Zips were flat in a three-point loss at Central Michigan last week. Three straight road games to open a season is tough and the Zips will play well back in front of the home fans at the Rubber Bowl tonight.
Akron has played well defensively in all three games this season and is surrendering just 282 yards per game offense. The Zips should have a feast stuffing this Noth Texas offense that has been atrocious in averaging 11.3 points and 165 yards per game. The Mean Green is very green in experience at the quarterback position and are averaging less than 99 yards per game through the air. Of course, they're also gaining a mere 68 yards per game on the ground. Akron is allowing just three yards per carry this year and they'll smash this North Texas attack all night long.
Unlike North Texas, the Zips have a proven signal caller in Luke Getsy (618 yards passing the last two games) as he is a legitimate pro prospect. He and the Zips should be able to light up this Mean Green defense that is giving up 30 points per game. Tulsa torched North Texas through the air last week and Akron will do the same Saturday night.
The Zips, who have covered seven of their last 10 home openers, will be playing in their first and only home game until the Oct. 21 Homecoming affair. Their fans are fired up after their upset of the Wolfpack two weeks ago, not to mention that Akron was a bowl team a year ago. The Zip faithful will have plenty to cheer about this evening as Akron rolls to an easy home win and cover!
