HSF Degen.....
Not a tremendous card on tap for this weekend in HSF... There are 2 games posted so far, and I'm a bit surprised that there are bigger games going on, but no lines... Hmmm... Well let's work with what we have on the plate.
Fri. 7pm
Parkway, LA +23 Pulaski Academy, AR (74')
This is a Border Battle that is the nouveau competition to showcase the better teams from the states that share borders..... In this one, we have Arkansas vs Louisiana... It appears to be the first meeting of 2 state power representatives... Both have storied history and both teams have a very active following.. Of course, this will be televised.
Parkway Panthers of Bossier City, LA enter the contest 1-1 after opening with a W against Washington 35-8 but were dealt a rude blow to Pearl High (50-27) out of MS in another Border war event... In 2016, the Panthers were 11-2, 12-2 in 2015, and 8-2 in '14.....They are currently ranked #5 in Class 5A in LA... and ranked #12 in the state overall.... The team has state titles in their history... Last year, the team was thrashed in the quarterfinals 61-21 to the eventual state champs, Landry-walker.... The team wants to avenge the loss, however, they will need to do it with a new skipper at the helm... HC David Feaster accumulated a remarkable 59-17 record in 6 seasons... Feaster was fired in the off season by the Principal D Bates, who cited the HC for insubordination and for bringing too much negative publicity to the program... This stemmed from an incident during the season in which the HC banishes all Alabama Coaches from practices and games.... This obviously didn't sit well with school alum and parents, as many attended the University and of course wanted their athletes to become part of the Tide... The program became a hot bed for morning talk shows and garnered National attention... Defensive Coordinator, Neil May took the HC job and there is a positive buzz surrounding the team despite the crazy off season....
The 2017 version is a loaded roster and there doesn't seem to be any ill effects from the Coaching fray.... There are several returnees on both sides of the ball.... Parkway will rely heavily on the high flying profile between return QB Justin Rogers and WR Terrace Marshall.... Last season offense averaged a very respectable 42.5 ppg... As in everything with the pigskin, the QB Sr J Rogers (6'4" 205 lbs) had 167 of 254 pass completions for 3,021 yards w/31 Tds and 789 yards rushing w/11 more TDs in 2016 and looks to add considerable numbers when he targets a true 5 Star WR recruit, T Marshall Jr. the Sr caught 55 passes for 1,250 yards w/ a mind-numbing 15 TDs...... Both are headed to Major Colleges, Rogers was recruited by numerous programs (Arkansas, Baylor, Georgia, Kentucky, Arizona, Ole Miss, Fla ATL to name a few) but appears to be committed to TCU to be a Frog.... Marshall is the Nation's #8 overall WR recruit and also has a plethora of offers, but isn't decided.... Joining him will be Sr Eric Williams, who had 100 carries for 769 yards w/13 TDs and caught 28 passes for 307 yards w/3 more TDs..... *Rogers will continue to show his worth as a Dual Threat and opposing teams better recognize that he was the teams leading rusher in '16 w/789 yards......Also, he was awarded the I-5A District MVP ly.
On Defense, the Panthers were the fortunate recipients of a couple of transfer students that came from a South Carolina Power, Berkeley High.... Sr Israel Mukuamu had 63 tackles ly and broke up 7 passes w/1 int and 2 forced fumbles .... He is a load at 6'5" 190 lbs.. Built like a LB, he can step into a LB position or drift into Zone Cover as a SS or CB (supposedly plays WR too)(offers to several schools, however, already committed to FSU) .. Sr LB David Morales, had 110 total tackles, including 14 for a loss w/3 forced fumbles w/a recovery and 2 sacks... The D line is strong with a couple of Div 1 recruits to plug gaps...... 2016 Defense allowed 25 ppg but held 8 of their opponents to 20 points or less....
Pulaski Academy Bruins are hot out of the gate with 2 fairly easy Ws body slamming opponents to the tune of 115-41........In 2016, the team was 13-1 with a State Title, inn 2015 Bruins were perfect with a 14-0 record w/State Champ., 2013 was more of the same 13-1.....The program has won last 7 League Championships, and has secured 3 consecutive State Rings.... HC Kevin Kelley is a hard man to play for as he demands perfection... He won the 2016 All-USA Coach of the Year Award... This team is currently sitting just outside the Top 25 National Rankings, although, it is #1 in all of Arkansas, and in the 5A Rank.... In Kelley's 15 years as a HC he is 167-25-1, and his squads have made it to the State Semis in 12 of those seasons while walking away with 6 crowns in 8 attempts.... (*He's actually been at Pulaski 20 years serving as an assistant).... Last years prolific offense is pretty much returning everybody from a offense that produced 48 ppg...
This high flying offense was led by Sr QB Layne Hatcher already has 3 State Titles under his belt... He's a competitor at 6'1" 185 lbs, ly he blistered opposition to the song of 278 of 430 pass attempts for 4,656 yards w/58 TDs... An example of his talent was Week 1 game against Sand Springs where he threw for 6 TDs to 4 different WRs and 1 rush TD (He also kicked 3 extra points and completed 2 conversion passes)... Obviously he has attracted numerous Div 1 Power Conference Schools from Oklahoma St, Purdue, Ole Miss, UCLA, Alabama, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Arkansas St, LA Tech, Samford) to name a few (still undecided)... **Big Note of Interest: Pulaski Offense might be one of the most unique schemes in HSF.. HC Kelley has a NO PUNT philosophy which means it could be 4th and 20 anywhere on the field and he will go for it.... He also utilizes a whole bag of tricks that include Rugby Style Laterals, Onside Kicks, Going for 2 on the Xtra Points, All sorts of formations (ie: Wildcat),... This is their identity and it often leads to dizzying offensive numbers like Hatcher in that 1st game scored 47 of the 59 points...
Teams are forced to study a multitude of schemes and formations and you never quite know what is coming at you...in addition, Hatcher has some outstanding athletes to throw or lateral to;. WR Trajen Johnson (6'2" 190 lbs) he caught 46 passes for 928 yards w/14 TDs he is fearless across the middle) He has several suitors calling including most of the Ivy League Schools...... TE Henry Hudson (6'5" 225 lbs) is the #4 TE in all of the country for the Class of '19 (Penn St, Wisconsin, Stanford, Arkansas Ole Miss, have all shown interest) As a Soph, he had 28 catches for 311 yards w/3 TDs. He will also line up as a WR in Coach Ks wacky offense Henrys older brother Hunter is a FROSH All American at Razorback U)....also had another older Bro, Hayden, that started for the Razorbacks as a LB........ C Luke Jones (6'6" 294 lbs) is a Class of 2018 top C in Top 5 in the Country (has had Dartmouth, LA Monroe, Texas) all showing interest...
Last year, the Bruins ran into a buzzsaw playing East out of Salt Lake City, who is always highly ranked in the Nation......losing 37-23...QB Hatcher feels like the team learned a valuable lesson in that game...... It appears they learned that when the crossroads of talent, desire, and hard work intersect on the gridiron, magic can happen...
Played 4 units on the Over 74'........ WINNA Both teams should be able to light up the scoreboard and I think this one should safely be played into the 80s or more.... I feel like Pulaski will win going away, however, I'm not really enthused about dropping -23 on the team from Arkansas.....Think I will sit back and be amused by this innovative offense of the Bruins..

*Note: I have Handicapped the Narbonne Harbor/ Centennial tilt for Friday but I can't take a side until I know more about Huskies QB T McKee who is still nursing a injury to his ankle from the IMG game... Hopefully will know more soon
