3-1 College FB
This week's card is a mess. Major pass.
One pick only: UCLA -25
IMHO...
Rice has a huge problem on Saturday...they are smaller and slower than UCLA, and have no playmakers. Their defense returns 7 players from a squad that gave up 34 ppg, and over 4 yds per rush. They don't usually step up in class, but last time they did they gave up 339 rushing to Texas last year, til Mack Brown called off the dogs. If Rice were in the Pac Ten, they would finish 14th. They haven't been to a bowl game since Kennedy was President.
Rule #1 in college football wagering: Don't bet bad teams.
Rule #5 in war: Maximize your efficiency. For UCLA, who needs wide receivers when you have TE Marcedes Lewis to catch the ball? And why throw when you can hand it to RBs Maurice Drew and Chris Markey?
Post mortem of last week's UCLA/SDSU contest: true, the Aztecs were stout, but SDSU was no where near covering that game. SDSU appeared to out stat the Bruins, but FD and yardage comparisons frequently favor the losing team. Scoreboard and emotion are determinative, and Dorrell didn't use his bench until it was 38-14 in the 3d QTR, when the cover was in the bag.
The Bruins haven't seen Rice in years, except on film, and won't hesitate to pad the scoreboard and put this one away early. Plus, Bruinland is a bit pizzed-off after two .500 seasons, and are eager to play the role of the bully, and have the talent to do it.
Rice has never been to the Rose Bowl, and will be playing past their dinner time. Owls will give their all for a while, but I see them pointing towards Texas, where they do their recruiting.
