Falcons (+5) over Eagles

Eagles had some things clicking on offense vs. the Vikes. Some WR's stepped up and Westbrooke played well. However it was the Eagles defense that impressed the most shutting down the Minny offense. Looking at the philly offense they got some serious breaks. Not only did Brian Russell DROP two interceptions but the LJ Smith fumble forward right into the endzone to the Philly WR. Looking at Minny they have a poor defense yet they still managed to keep themselves in the game. Then a screwed up fake FG attempt killed a positive drive. Yes the Viking had there share of breaks as well.

looking at the Philly defense. Constant pressure was in the Minny backfield all day. Trotter was blowing up the line of scrimmage and minny couldn't establish any running game. This WILL be a problem this weekend because all day long the LB's were blitzing and Wiggins was open in the middle of the field. Culpepper failed to read this the whole game. Atlanta should be able to take advantage because Vick looks for Crumpler when he is in trouble. Also Culpepper has scrambling ability but to compare him to Vick is an insult. Vick will be able to turn the ball up field when a play breaks down something Culpepper could have done but instead chose to scramble behind the line of scrimmage, to keep the passing play alive. The problem I see for Atlanta is how TRUE the eagles played in their lanes. I rarely saw the Eagles D-lineman over commit. Something the Falcons took advantage of playing the Rams. Vick broke huge runs of the playaction counter. IMO they will not have that open up against this eagle defense. That doesn't mean that Vick won't still out run the back side containment and get a few positive yards. But I don't think the play will have as much success. To keep containment means the line can't crash down, which should allow Dunn some running room. Philly has played well in the secondary but this game will not be won going deep every play. But they do have the ability to go deep if it is a must. The Falcons had the league's No. 1-ranked rushing offense.

Defensively the falcons are light years better than the Vikings. McNabb had all day to sit in the pocket and pass. The D-line of Atlanta will NOT be held at bay and WILL force McNabb into poor throws. As well as the Eagles WR's played the Eagles offense did not dominate the game. If they did, then this would be a different play. How this stands the D-line will collapse running lanes and the LB's will fill gaps, trying to shut down Westbrooke. McNabb will have to beat the Falcons himself and the WR's on the Eagles will not have as easy a day vs. Atlanta. The Falcons WILL jam the WR's off the line and that will be a huge difference. Minny did not want to get burned deep (why I don't know) but they played off every play. Atlanta will jam them or they will have problems. All in all the defense of the Falcons is too tough up front to give McNabb time and the corners and secondary are too good not to make plays and get into the receivers grill.

Special teams, Atlanta has a huge advantage in special team with Rossum returning. He has great field awareness and quickness. The Eagles have a great coverage team but Atlanta has the ability to break the big one. Plus the special teams coach likes to throw some curve balls, so they will have a trick return ready to go.

looking at this game, the echos of loses years past should not play into the eagles head. The will have the philly faithfully up and crazy for this game. It will be chilly and on grass, something the Falcons haven't always played well on. This will be Vicks game to win or lose. anything can happen on any given Sunday, but the Falcons have the tools to win this game. I'll give Reid a big coaching advantage, he will have some great plays ready to go, and Johnson will have the Blitzes dialed up. I am not sold on the ability of the eagles to get it done without TO on offense. It worked against the Minny defense but Sunday will be a different story. McNabb will have to scramble a lot because Atlanta has a very talented front four. I see the Falcons giving the Eagles everything they can handle and might even win this out right.

Great write-up Irish.

Was a lot of these points that originally had me thinking 'under' for the game....But not now it's down to 39!!

Agree with a lot of things you say, and might jump onboard...esp. if it gets upto 6. (5.5 now in places I see!)

Good luck.

Atl/Philly OVER (40.5)

Bad weather in Philly looks like snow, with the Falcons being a dome team this could hurt. Both teams will be utilizing their running game and in the cold, both teams should be able to move the ball. I think it will be very cold but the pitch will not be boggy, it will be frozen. looks a little like the game Atlanta was in 2 years ago at Lambo. Freezing temps and the falcons scored 27.

Good Luck

Pitt (+3) over NE
NE is coming off an inspirational win over Indy. The Pat's defense played outside themselves, all game. Belichick has been a scheme genius in the past and continued last Sunday. No one can argue NE is a great team, with all the parts to win another Superbowl this year. They have an unbelievable defense (CB are a little weak but still), a MVP QB, solid O-line, Speed at WR and of course Dillon at RB. Dillon did not play the last times they two met and the result was ZERO running game for the Pats and Brady forced to throw all day resulting in turnovers. The addition of Dillon in this game will be huge for NE.

Looking at the Steelers, they will attempt to establish the run! My guess is Cowher gave the Bus the majority of the snaps last week, so Staley would have a full tank for this week (both backs are solid, bus more up the gut runner). NE wants to force the Steelers to the outside, rather than allowing them to run up the middle. Staley has the ability to turn the corner and be productive on the outside. The key is how the defense WILL play. Roethlisberger did not play well last weekend, and every excuse was given from his thumb being hurt to wearing a glove. I don't think those excuses should be used rather he just had a bad game, but it didn't cost his team. Even with the Steelers poor play at QB, the Defense played well enough to not allow a TD (pick 6, kick return TD). Steelers #1 Total defense, NE #9, both teams giving up around 16 points per game. NE allows about 99 yards rushing, while the Steelers have allowed about 81 rushing yards per contest. Last game Pitt was able to take advantage of turnovers and force the Pats to play catch up. I expect both defenses to have solid games. Both kickers are weather tested, Heinze field has never been a kicker friendly stadium.

The steelers will have the fans in a frenzy at Heinze. The 2 loses the Pats have are games they played away. Both teams play in the cold well, and they both play on grass. Looks like there will be some fresh snow on Saturday in Pittsburgh. But from what I'm seeing now it looks like sunny on Sunday with a chance of flurries. This game will be won in the trenches and IMO the O-line of Pitt can open holes for the Bus or Staley. The blitz will be key for Pitt, they MUST get pressure on Brady and force him to make bad throws, as they did in their 1st game and as Miami did, when they beat NE. Indy got a little pressure on Brady but not enough. It will be a different story on Sunday. IMO NE might face a little bit of a let down after shutting the Colts down. Pittsburgh's last three playoff games all have been decided by 3 points.

irish,

since your basing some of your total bet on that gb game, i thought i would refresh your memory in that green bay game......

gb had 5 turnovers

gb had 1 blocked punt (td for atl)

gb 1 muffed punt (td for atl)

so 14 of the 27 points were gifts....

no way atl. scores 27 on sunday.

since i have under 42 in the game maybe we both can win if the total lands on 41.

good luck this weekend...& thanks for your contribution to the football forums this year.

PITT/NE UNDER 36
Two tough redzone defenses combined with poor weather make it hard to get points every drive. Ball should be rock hard for those kickers so teams won't attempt the long FG's.

I'll settle with 41 as a total in the Falcons game - 21-20 Falcons win?? ;) .
I don't think that the Atl/Phil game will be like the GB game, I was just saying I don't think the cold will effect the Falcons that much. We'll see??? Best of luck to you this weekend!

I've been on the Falcons since the start so I just hope they get to the Superbowl so I can cash in. I love the 5pts they're giving me in the snow too

Might go the other way on NE but that under looks tempting as well. Its tough to kick in Heinz field at the best of times so the snow ont help matters.
