Sorry about the setback, but I'm confident that things will turn around for you. You are an obvious difference-maker, and I'm sure that potential employers will notice that about you from the start. Take care:toast:

ChadI believe you can check about unemployment on line. My son is a trucker and is running about 50/60% and signs up every week and does get it. Of course not full but all helps.
Chad best of luck. And do keep golfing or at least going there. It seems so many folks make contacts at the golf course when it comes to jobs.

Mr. Obama:
I have had it with you and your administration, sir. Your conduct on your recent trip overseas has convinced me that you are not an adequate representative of the United States of America collectively or of me personally.
You are so obsessed with appeasing the Europeans and the Muslim world that you have abdicated the responsibilities of the President of the United States of America . You are responsible to the citizens of the United States . You are not responsible to the peoples of any other country on earth.
I personally resent that you go around the world apologizing for the United States telling Europeans that we are arrogant and do not care about their status in the world. Sir, what do you think the First World War and the Second World War were all about if not the consideration of the peoples of Europe ? Are you brain dead? What do you think the Marshall Plan was all about? Do you not understand or know the history of the 20th century?
Where do you get off telling a Muslim country that the United States does not consider itself a Christian country? Have you not read the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution of the United States ? This country was founded on Judeo-Christian ethics and the principles governing this country, at least until you came along, come directly from this heritage. Do you not understand this?
Your bowing to the king of Saudi Arabia is an affront to all Americans. Our President does not bow down to anyone, let alone the king of Saudi Arabia . You don?t show Great Britain , our best and one of our oldest allies, the respect they deserve yet you bow down to the king of Saudi Arabia . How dare you, sir! How dare you!
You can?t find the time to visit the graves of our greatest generation because you don?t want to offend the Germans but make time to visit a mosque in Turkey . You offend our dead and every veteran when you give the Germans more respect than the people who saved the German people from themselves. What?s the matter with you? I am convinced that you and the members of your administration have the historical and intellectual depth of a mud puddle and should be ashamed of yourselves, all of you.
You are so self-righteously offended by the big bankers and the American automobile manufacturers yet do nothing about the real thieves in this situation, Mr. Dodd, Mr. Frank, Franklin Raines, Jamie Gorelic, the Fannie Mae bonuses, and the Freddie Mac bonuses. What do you intend to do about them? Anything? I seriously doubt it. What about the U.S. House members passing out $9.1 million in bonuses to their staff members ? on top of the $2.5 million in automatic pay raises that lawmakers gave themselves? I understand the average House aide got a 17% bonus. I took a 5% cut in my pay to save jobs with my employer. You haven?t said anything about that. Who authorized that? I surely didn?t!
Executives at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac will be receiving $210 million in bonuses over an eighteen-month period, that's $45 million more than the AIG bonuses. In fact, Fannie and Freddie executives have already been awarded $51 million ? not a bad take. Who authorized that and why haven?t you expressed your outrage at this group who are largely responsible for the economic mess we have right now.
I resent that you take me and my fellow citizens as brain-dead and not caring about what you idiots do. We are watching what you are doing and we are getting increasingly fed up with all of you. I also want you to know that I personally find just about everything you do and say to be offensive to every one of my sensibilities. I promise you that I will work tirelessly to see that you do not get a chance to spend two terms destroying my beautiful country.
Sincerely,
Every real American

Sorry to hear this, Chad.

It sucks, but with your wife having a good job as a lawyer, and with you at least still having the part time income, I suppose you're one of the somewhat lucky unlucky ones.

Enjoy some time on the links, relax a little, take the temperature of the mid-term/long-term situation of your role at your current company, and go from there.

You'll be fine, man.

Chad Just reading this morning buddy --been out of computer range since friday.
I think one key issue overlooked was "your going on part time while many not so lucky"
This would certainly indicate to me your employer has been quite satisified with your work (which I could understand in knowing you from here) and will bring you back full time at 1st opportunity.
While I might send a few feelers out on new employment--You might look at it is as short time with reduced hours at perfect time of year-spring. Also I believe your employer will have to pay 65% of your cobra premium.
I would wager a guess you will be back to full time within 90 days--if not--good men are always in demand--and you would be at top of most list--

Thanks to all for the thoughts, again. Got up early, made a "to-do" list of things I needed to do and information to seek out, along with a personal/home "to-do" list to accomplish during the down times. Found out quite a bit, actually, and connected with a few well-placed friends who let me know what's going on in the area (both are essentially in the same field as myself) and what they've gone through and suggest.

Wayne, you mention the Cobra thing - I hope that's the case, as that is a big initial concern with the wife's recent melanoma issues (fine for now, but an ongoing concern forever) and always wanting to be prepared for anything. The owner mentioned he thought he would be assuming some of the Cobra $$, which seemed odd to say if that's not the case, and I had also heard that. If it's half my cost or even better, we should be in fine shape to ride this out for a while. Also looks like the partial unemployment (should I choose to take it) would be $300-$400 per month or so, which will make up a good part of my child support obligation - to consider one thing. I don't want to go down that road of reduced child support if I don't have to... son is currently in college and I know the money helps him, and I think it's important to not be chintzy in that area.

So, for the first "business day" of no work, I feel better prepared to move forward. Already had the resume tuned up about a year ago, as I was considering other options at that time. Wife even mentioned their firm would consider buying a local abstracting company (which I know nothing about, but) because the woman wants to sell it and retire, and have me train under her and then take over that business. An interesting option, essentially my own boss, local, manager of my own self and my time, but tough for me (my wife thought) because it supposedly is extremely boring and tedious work and my mind is more creatively inclined, so to speak. But, an interesting idea, for sure.

Thanks so much, again, everyone. It's a pick-me-up to read the well wishes. And, I haven't even gotten drunk yet, after hearing the news... not sure if that's positive or negative?!?

Check to see if you qualify, I did and the COBRA is paid 65% thanks to President Obama, and pushing that through. Didn't think much about it, until I needed it. (Not a political answer, just happy it was a benefit I could take advantage of) Makes my paymen only $147.00 a month. Put my son on my ex-wife plans for the short term.

Ha second interview today with another company, I expect it will come down to an offer, but that is the tricky part so far. Low balls have been the norm from the people I have discussed it with and the recruiters!

Let me know if you want to get that drink or water!

Just thought I would post an update - might be of use to some of you who are going through work-related stress and life issues. Things are working out pretty well for us, all things considered. As I mentioned, I do have a very supportive wife with a nice income, who pushed me hard to go back to school and become a teacher/coach. I finally swallowed hard, and went for it. Currently taking 15 hours in the summer semester, and after worrying about getting started, I spent the last day or so studying hard (Psychology - figured that would help me better understand the freaks in the Politics forum...:D ) and took my first test this morning - 96% and a solid "A". So, off to a good start, although 15 hours for an old guy with a shitty memory and having been out of the study mode for so long I know it will be tough. Looks like I can take the first 3 semesters pretty much all online and that will help.

Have been able to continue working the two days a week, drawing more unemployment benefits than I thought I would be able to, and my employer is paying 65% of my Cobra insurance plan for at least 7 months. So, things are initially turning out pretty well, and hopefully the wife will continue to have good months, and I can keep my head in the game. The bonus is I have more time to help with the summer baseball coaching, and the team is off to a great start.

So, posting this to thank everyone for the initial support, and to maybe give some others some positivity that there may be some good things that can come from tough spots. Now, back to the books!:dizzy:

chad:

I usually don't respond to threads like this (not because I don't care but I feel I may miss someones good or bad fortune and don't want them to feel slighted) however, in your case I want to add my 2 cents.

Since tort reform (late 80's) I've had to make adjustments and saw significant decline in my income. Reasons aside, we've had some pretty rough financial times in the Haskell household over the last 20 years or so. Things are beginning to turn around, again reasons aside, and I feel great.

I think the down/stressful times make us appreciate the up side of life. I firmly beleive that if you are a likeable person (like moi) you will do well. That is step one to success. Hate to be trite but remember what Clarence wrote to George in "It's a Wonderful Life":

"No man is a failure who has friends."

Appears like you are the kinda guy who has a ton.

Eddie

PS: Great post Shawn.
