I can't let this pass without comment:
Bye Bye!
"Believe it or not, the man who treasures majors more than money, food and sleep left the PGA Championship early even though he still had a remote chance to get into a playoff and win.
That's right, Tiger Woods flew home to Orlando on Sunday night after weather halted play at Baltusrol. He was the leader in the clubhouse at 2-under-par 278 and only three players finishing Monday morning were ahead of him ? Phil Mickelson at 4 under and Steve Elkington and Thomas Bjorn at 3 under. Also, Vijay Singh and Davis Love III were tied with him, and Retief Goosen was a shot back.
As it happened, that's how the leaderboard ended up. But had all three players ahead backed up to a 2-under total on their last three or four holes, including the two closing par 5s, Woods would have missed the playoff because he was MIA.
You might say he would have kicked himself for a year or 10 had that happened. That would have gone down as one of the biggest boners in the history of sports . . ."
Let's see . . . Elkington quacked one into the trees on 18. Bjorn stepped up big when he holed a medium length birdie putt on 17. That leaves only Phil Mickelson, who was 5 over par over the prior 31 holes and had squandered as many precious opportunities in the majors as the rest of the contenders combined. Stranger things have certainly happened, but NOTHING in the history of sports would have been more stupefying than if Tiger Woods had been MIA for a Monday playoff. Hindsight didn't vindicate his foresight, but in Wood's typical fashion, he'll 'splain that of course he was vindicated. Whatever.
